Sleep consists of a number of stages, one of which is termed REM sleep. The REM stage of sleep is linked to dreaming. Strangely enough, when in REM sleep, our brain activity levels are similar to what they would be when weâre awake.

There are a few non-REM stages as well and the most important is slow-wave sleep. Thatâs the type of sleep we need to feel refreshed in the morning.

When we sleep, we alternate between REM and non-REM stages. But itâs been found that people living with depression spend a greater amount of their sleep time in the REM stages of sleep56. This altered sleep behaviour persists in people who have a history of depression but are not currently suffering an episode7.

This has led to the idea that increased REM sleep leads to depression. This is something youâll often see written on other sleep websites and in earlier scientific literature but it isnât strictly true.

A more helpful way to understand the sleep disturbances those with depression experience is to think of their sleep cycle being somewhat âshiftedâ. This disruption leads to mood disturbances like depression.

As a result of this âshiftâ it would seem that depressed populations experience less restorative slow-wave sleep during their time in bed, which may lead to a mood disturbance.

With this in mind, letâs consider what options there are for someone living with depression to improve their sleep.

What Causes Problems With Sleep

The things that affect our sleep differ for everyone. They can include:

  • stresses or worries for example, issues with money, housing or;work
  • problems with where you sleep for example, if you sleep somewhere uncomfortable or youre easily disturbed
  • health conditions relating to sleep, also known as sleep disorders
  • being a parent or carer

Its not possible to relax if you dont have anywhere comfortable and safe at night. This leads to not sleeping and worrying most of the night.

If problems with sleep are worrying you or affecting your day to day life, its a good idea to see a doctor who can give you a health check and help you access treatment and support. If you fill in a sleep diary, you could take this to your appointment to show your doctor.

My sleep problems are more a case of bedtime procrastination than insomnia as such and, as a consequence, being too tired the next morning. I still havent found out what works for me as I can get to sleep once I do get to bed.

Distress And Quality Of Life

Disturbed sleep is a very distressing symptom which has huge impact on quality of life in depressed patients. We surveyed the views of patients with depression about their symptoms and associated sleep difficulties. In this study, 2800 members of Depression Alliance, a UK-based charity for people with depression, were sent a postal questionnaire. Respondents were asked if, when they are depressed, they suffer from sleep difficulties .

Why Does Depression Make You Sleep So Much Depression And Oversleeping

With the above said, however, oversleeping or not sleeping enough, is one of the many symptoms of depression. Depression can either cause you to oversleep or to not sleep enough.

Depression makes you sleep too much because of the toll depression and the other symptoms of it take on your body.

A depressed person is generally weighed down with the weight of all the issues that are bogging them down. This leads to other symptoms like being irritable and having serious mood swings, having a loss of appetite, and just being generally disinterested in life.

When all these symptoms are compounded, you have a person who is mentally and emotionally exhausted without realizing it. That mental and emotional exhaustion then takes its toll on the body leading to physical exhaustion. And when the body itself gets exhausted to that extent, its response is to sleep and in most cases, oversleep.

Journal About Your Worries

If your worries or repetitive negative thoughts arent going away with relaxation strategies, find a notebook and write down the troubling thoughts. This contains the thoughts that might keep you awake as your brain goes over them again and again.

You might even designate a bit of time before bedtime as your designated worry time, so you can really clear your mind.

If you live with a mental health problem, this could affect your sleep in lots of ways. For example:

  • Anxiety can cause racing or repetitive thoughts, and worries that keep you awake. You may also have panic attacks while you’re trying to sleep.

The most basic form of sleep deprivation treatment is getting an adequate amount of sleep, typically 7 to 9 hours each night.

How Sleep Affects Depression

Mounting evidence shows just how tightly sleep and depression are intertwined. Studies estimate that between 65 to 90 percent of adults with depression and up to 90 percent of children with the disorder experience some type of sleep problem.;

Lack of adequate sleep also appears to worsen symptoms of depression. One study found that depressed individuals with sleep problems were less likely to respond to antidepressant therapy compared to depressed patients who did not have sleep problems. They were also more likely to have suicidal thoughts and die by suicide.;

Some researchers have also found that the relationship between sleep and depression may be reciprocal. According to the journal Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience,epidemiologic studies suggest that people without depression who suffer from insomnia are at greater risk of becoming depressed in the future.;

How Does Depression Affect Work

Loss of concentration and enthusiasm, forgetfulness, fatigue, lack of sleep, and other debilitating effects of depression can decrease a persons productivity at work. This is bad news for the economy. A recent study on the impacts of clinical depression in a workplace showed that about $44 billion is lost every year due to depression and resulting poor productivity among employees.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy For Insomnia

In populations with depression, CBTi delivered in person delivers mood and sleep improvements 10.

As mentioned earlier, if sleep is improved then mood should improve and this appears to be the case10. The same is observed for remote CBTi but the evidence base isnât quite as strong right now. This may be because:

  • The closer interaction between therapist and client leads to greater investment on the part of the client â they want to see the treatment through and have real support in doing so.

Depressed people suffer from extreme loneliness, low self-esteem and confidence, grave insecurities/inferiority complex, and a minimal sense of focus. These factors may drive them to isolation, resulting in deterioration of their social life and relationships. A lot of negative feelings are involved in depression, and other people may not be empathetic, patient or sensitive enough to understand to give space and support to a depressed person. There are many things that can keep a person from sleeping well. Depression is only one of these causes. Young people under the age of 30 or 40 often have a hard time falling asleep when they are depressed. It affects older people in a different way.
