Battery Life Works For Now But Longer Battery Would Make Sense
Existing Apple Watches will need at least 30% battery life on a charge before tracking sleep at night. If the battery level’s lower, the watch will request a charge-up. The Apple Watch 5‘s battery lasts about 18 hours, and you can charge the battery to 80% in about 1.5 hours and 100% in 2.5 hours. Apple’s sleep tracking dims the display and reduces background activity, showing a basic watch face and the date or alarm if a button is pressed.
If you’re used to charging the Apple Watch every night, wearing the watch to bed may seem like a disruption. “That does introduce new charging behavior for people where before they would just charge overnight,” Lynch acknowledges, leaving wearers to decide whether to top off in the morning, charge a bit more at night, or just skip sleep tracking.
It would make a lot of sense to just find a way to improve the Apple Watch battery life — maybe by expanding the battery capacity in the next modelsor removing Force Touch, which senses pressure to do things like change the watch face. Apple’s new app guidelines encourage developers to move away from Force Touch, and include these features in the UI or through a long press on WatchOS 7. Apple removed pressure-sensitive 3D Touch from the iPhone 11 Pro and gained considerable battery life in return. Could the same happen for the Apple Watch this fall and help sleep tracking be less awkward, too?
View Your Sleep History
In the morning, wake up to an informative greeting, then review your nights rest and compare it to the rest of the week. To view your sleep history, open the Sleep app on your Apple Watch and scroll down to review your data. For more stats, like weekly and monthly averages, or to find out how your heart rate fluctuated throughout the night, access the app on your paired .
Can I Shower With My Apple Watch 4
While activities like washing your hands and showering while wearing an Apple Watch Series 2, 3, or 4 are technically okay, Apple doesnt recommend exposing your device to soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and perfumes as these substances can negatively affect water seals and acoustic membranes on the device.
So How Much Sleep Do You Need
If you’ve never really thought about it before, it can be hard to guesstimate exactly how much sleep your body needs.
While everyone is different, there are some general guidelines, based on age, to help you come up with a figure. The guidelines, published in Sleep Health: Journal of the National Sleep Foundation, were penned by a panel of experts that looked at 320 studies on the matter.
Teenagers : 8-10 hours
Young adults : 7-9 hours
Adults : 7-9 hours
Older adults : 7-8 hours
It’s worth taking these guidelines seriously, as getting yourself into long-term “sleep debt” has been linked to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. That’s why iPhone’s Bedtime mode comes in handy.

2. Scroll down and tap Browse.
3. Tap Sleep.
4. Browse the various graphs available to you that show how well you’re sleeping on each day of the week.

What About Using A Fitbit Apple Watch Or Other Wrist Wearable
If you already use a wearable with sleep-tracking capabilities, you may be perfectly happy sticking with what you have rather than buying a separate app to use on your phone. Wearables track your sleep automaticallyno setup before bed. In 2018, we tested the sleep-tracking features on a Fitbit tracker, a Garmin tracker, and an Apple Watch against four apps. At the time, the wearables were frequently off compared with the apps, usually over-reporting sleep, though they did give an accurate picture of sleep trends over time. This is something youll see as long as you consistently use the same device over the long term.
The biggest advantage of sleep-tracking phone apps over wearables lies in the extra features, such as smart alarms and sounds that help you fall asleep. Wearables can buzz you awake, which is a plus if you sleep with a partner who has a different schedule, and they can nudge you to get ready for bed just as they nudge you to get up and move during the day. Theyre great for people who prefer not to bring a phone into the bedroom, and they can be helpful in determining how hard you should work out the next day based on your sleep.
How To Activate Bedtime
When you begin using Bedtime you will need to answer a few simple questions before it is enabled. You will be guided through these questions across a series of pages, where you will be asked:
- What time would you like to get up?
- What days would you like the alarm to go off?
- How many hours of sleep do you need each night? .
- When would you like a bedtime reminder?
- What do you want to hear when you wake up?

If youre an executive seeking peak performance from the moment you wake up or a parent hoping to create a better nightly routine for your family, youve probably heard about sleep tracking wearables devices that promise to improve your health and productivity by monitoring your sleep. Sleep tracking tech is rapidly becoming ubiquitous: This month, Apple added the feature to tens of millions of Apple Watches in a free watchOS 7 software update, and in August.
But despite years of work by researchers and wearable developers, meaningfully useful sleep tracking remains more a dream than a reality. After trying the feature in prerelease versions of watchOS 7, I spent the past week testing Apples finished sleep tracking app, which meant changing my daily charging routine, wearing my Watch to bed each night, and checking my phone for insights each day. Having gone through that process, Im convinced Ive experienced the kernel of a valuable solution, but just like the very first Apple Watch, it still feels half-baked.
Here are some of the things I discovered during my testing regimen.
What About The Oura Ring
The Oura Ring is a Bluetooth-enabled, rechargeable sleep tracker made of lightweight titanium that you wear on your index, middle, or ring finger. We tested the Oura Ring over several months, including comparing it against SleepScore, Sleep Cycle, Pillow, and Sleep as Android, and have a full review of the device. While we think the SleepScore and Sleep Cycle provide sufficient sleep tracking for most people, the Oura Ring does offer additional, interesting insights, including heart rate and heart rate variability readings. However, the Oura Ring is more expensive than our app picks and isnt a very good fitness tracker, so it isnt as versatile as other wearables.
The Oura Rings sleep tracking wasnt significantly more or less accurate compared with our top app picks . But the heart rate and HRV readings are very accurate. There has even been research showing that these data points, along with the rings oxygen-rate and skin-temperature readings, could help detect some illnesses, such as COVID-19, before symptoms begin.
Ios 14 And Watchos 7 Sleep Features: Sleep Mode Wind Down Sleep Tracking And More
Apple in iOS 14 and watchOS 7 introduced a new Sleep Tracking feature that’s designed to help you monitor how much sleep you’re getting each night with Apple Watch and improve your sleep habits through bedtime reminders and a winding down process.
This guide walks through all of the Sleep Tracking functionality available on the iPhone and the Apple Watch in Apple’s 2020 software updates.
How To Track Your Sleep Using Apple Watch Or Iphone With These Third
Sleep tracking has been one the most oft-requested features for Apple Watch, but Apple itself has yet to implement a solution. That hasnt stopped developers from creating their own watchOS apps for doing it, though.
One of the more popular apps for sleep tracking with Apple Watch is called AutoSleep.
AutoSleep allows you track your sleep with your Apple Watch in two different ways. The first, and most detailed/accurate, way is to wear your Apple Watch while you sleep. If you do this, all you have to do is download the AutoSleep app from the App Store and plugin some basic information about yourself.
If you track your sleep this way, youll get a variety of details about your sleep every morning when you wake up. This information includes graph showing your sleep qualities and cycle.
Additionally, you can view how long you laid awake in bed, how restful your sleep was, your average heart rate, and how long you spent in deep sleep.
Of course, many users dont wear their Apple Watch to sleep. Before we move on to how to track sleep without wearing Apple Watch, theres something to note here.
One of the primary reasons users dont sleep in their Apple Watch is because of battery life. One thing Ive done to get around this issue, is take my Apple Watch off for about 30 minutes before bed and put it back on when I lay down. Then, I take it off while I get ready in the morning and put it back on as Im about to leave.

What Apple Watch Devices Work With Sleep Tracking
WatchOS 7 and the Sleep app associated with it are only compatible with particular Apple Watches. These include the Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 4, Apple Watch Series 5, Apple Watch Series 6, and Apple Watch SE.
If you own an original Apple Watch or Series 1 or 2 model, you can’t use the Sleep app. You’ll also need an iPhone that runs iOS 14 which means anything newer than an iPhone 6s.
How Can I Change My Sleep Goal
If you’ve realized you under or overestimated what sleep you need, it makes sense to adjust your sleep goal. Here’s where to look.
1. On your iPhone, open the Health app and tap Sleep.
2. Tap Full Schedule & Options.
3. Tap Sleep Goal and adjust it to the length of time you now need.
You can also change your schedule so that your Apple Watch automatically adjusts depending on the day of the week. Want to have a lie-in on a Saturday? Tweak the times for Saturday so you can sleep longer than on a Monday morning.

Data Tracking With Pillow
At the end of a sleep session, Pillow will tell you the number of hours you slept. Swipe down the screen to see the quality of sleep, both for the previous night and past nights. Swipe further to see how much time you spent in each cycle of sleep and how long you were in bed versus how long you were asleep.
You can also launch Pillow on your iPhone to run it from there or just see what data it records and how it works with your Apple Watch.
In the settings for Pillow on your iPhone, you can opt to always sync the data with the Health app, or you can manually sync it by tapping the Sync button in the Apple Watch app. After the data has synced, open the Health app and segue to the section for Sleep. By default, the app shows all data from any sleep app for which you’ve given permission.
Best Versatile App: Sleep Cycle
Why We Chose It: We chose Sleep Cycle as the best versatile app as it is available on iOS, Android, and Huawei.
Overlay of audio recordings on the sleep cycle graph for better interpretation
Able to identify a variety of different sounds, including coughing, talking, snoring, and a baby fussing
Lack of in-depth analysis of sleep compared to other apps
Need to manually start and stop sleep tracking
Poor descriptions of different tracking metrics
Sleep Cycle by Sleep Cycle AB gives you a simplified look at sleep patterns by analyzing audio recordings of snoring, talking, coughing, and other sounds. This app tracks your sleep cycle graphically and overlays audio recordings to help identify what is going on during different periods of sleep.
It has an average rating of 4.7 stars on the App Store and 4.4 stars on Google Play, as of March 2021. Sleep Cycle offers sleep statistics and can identify both short- and long-term trends. No equipment or fitness wearables are needed all you need to do is have your phone beside your bed. The app must be turned on before going to bed, and since it uses sound analysis to identify sleep states, there is the potential for error if you sleep with others in the room. You do need to start and stop the sleep timer manually, which can be problematic if you forget to do this regularly.
