If you have 5 or more sleep logs, your sleep goal is estimated based on an average of these logs. Your wake-up time target is estimated based on the time you typically wake up each day, and your bedtime target defaults to the time you should go to sleep in order to meet your sleep goal.

If you have fewer than 5 sleep logs, you can provide an estimate of how much sleep you get on a typical night, and your sleep goal is set based on this estimate. You must manually set your bedtime and wake-up time targets.

Why Can Fitbit Track Sleeping

The ability of Fitbit trackers to track sleep patterns is down to the fact that its fitted with sensors called accelerometers. They help detect the wearers motion along with the direction and speed of the motion. When the tracker detects that you havent moved in over an hour, the algorithm assumes that you are asleep. This is often supported by the kind of movements you make while youre asleep such as rolling over. Your movements in the morning tell the tracker that you have woken up. This mechanism is not perfect and for this reason can falsely assume that youre asleep after you have stayed for too long without moving. When this happens, simply delete the sleep record from your dashboard.

Fitbit sleep tracking works differently for different models as explained below:

  • Fitbit Ultra, One, Flex and Zip: Enter the time you spent asleep on the Fitbit website or in the app. Fitbit will use the accelerometer data to establish whether you were asleep, awake or restless during that time frame. This data is based on the movements of your wrist during the time you said you were asleep.
  • Fitbit Surge, Charge HR, Charge, Force: These 4 models determine the beginning and end of your sleep automatically based on your movements for one hour. You can always enter the time manually if you feel autodetection is not accurate.

What Should I Know About Fitbit Sleep Stages

If you use a Fitbit device with heart-rate tracking to track your sleep, you can see a record of the sleep stages you cycle through at night. This article answers frequently asked questions about sleep stages.

While youre asleep each night, your body typically goes through several sleep cycles that last on average 90 minutes. In each cycle you alternate between two types of sleep:

Can Fitbit Track Sleep Apnea

Whats immediately clear is that I got a green star last night for hitting my personal total asleep goal of 7 hr 30 min. Great!

Smart Wake attempts to find the best time to wake you up starting 30 minutes before the time you set your alarm for. It prevents you from waking up in deep sleep which will help you feel more refreshed and less groggy. If Smart Wake cant find an optimal time to wake you up, itll default to the time you set.

      Very disappointed appointed in the Inspire 2 So I have had a Fitbit and a Fitbit Alta , the swimming one . I would rather have the Fitbit Alta . Everything works sleep, heart rate and sleeping pattern . The inspire 2 you have to go in your app to tell it youre going to sleep and when you wake up , it dose not record my sleeping pattern. And you dont have to pay extra. I fall asleep before I can go into the app and I forget to tell it iam awake . The blood pressure app only has resting not the other features. I bought one for my husband and iam going to send it back. And if I can return the one I have iam going to. And I think the extra app that you guys are including coach workout Is not for me I just want the basic apps to work like my Fitbit. Very disappointed 5 year customer

      For sleep, you do not have to do anything just let it figure out your sleep itself. I don’t know what you are doing in the app, but if you are telling it “begin sleep now”, that can prevent getting sleep stages.

      The blood pressure app only has resting not the other features.” There is no blood pressure app. Maybe you mean heart rate, which has resting” heart rate. But I have no idea what other features you are talking about.

      First Tests Basic Accuracy

      But during the night, that shouldnt be an issue. So Im reasonably satisfied that when Im not moving, the heart rate reading can be trusted .

      As for less vigorous movement, again it seems pretty good. It counts my steps well during the day, and reacts automatically to exercise such as walking or cycling. And importantly, when I get up in the night to use the toilet or get a drink, it hasnt missed it once .

      An important point here is that this is the kind of initial testing the average person might do with a new device. And if a device passes these tests, its more likely the owner will trust the more complex data like sleep stages.

      How To Start Tracking Sleep

      What Does Awake Minutes Mean

      When youre viewing your sleep stage data, youll most likely see awake minutes information. The average adult wakes up several times throughout the night. Even though you may not remember waking up, if your Fitbit shows awake minutes then you definitely did.

      If you wake up briefly and then fall right back asleep your brain will likely not remember it at all and will assume that you were sleeping throughout the night. If you frequently wake up feeling like you arent refreshed, thats probably an indicator that you woke up frequently throughout the night and youll see a higher amount of awake minutes in your app.

      How Do Your Sleep Stages Stack Up

      When you click on the sleep tile from your Fitbit dashboard and then choose Today, youll be able to see how much time you spent in each sleep stage and what percent of your total nights sleep that stage constituted.

      On average, light sleep will take up about 50 to 60 percent or more of your night. Whether you get more or less light sleep isnt really going to affect how you feel too much, because its just whatever time is left thats not spent in deep sleep or REM, says Grandner. Its sort of the remainder.

      Deep sleep, on the other hand is likely to take up 10 to 25 percent of your sleep. Theres no real way to get too much deep sleep, says Grandner. Your body has its own natural drive for it, so once you meet that, the need will dissipate and youll just start going into REM and light sleep.
