Flaws But Not Dealbreakers

As of February 2021, SleepScore works only on specific phones. It doesnt work with the iPhone 5, 5s, and SE but is compatible with any iPhone with iOS software 10.3.3 or higher . As for Android phones, it works with the Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S8, S8+, S9, S9+, Note 8, and Note 9, as well as the Google Pixel 2 XL.

When we asked the company about this limitation, the representative explained that because the app is dependent on a phones speaker and microphone, the company tests the app on each specific phone model for accuracy before supporting that phone. SleepScore says that if youre using an unsupported Android model, you will still be able to track your sleep using that device, but the SleepScore app features and functionality will vary. We also wonder whether this failure to update may open up any security issues on non-compatible phones. To be safe, we think its best for those with incompatible phones to skip SleepScore and try our also-great pick, Sleep Cycle, instead. Android users who dont mind a wonky interface could try Sleep as Android, which contains cool features but is difficult to navigate.

We also wished that the app could track snoring by itself, like Sleep Cycle, Pillow, and Sleep as Android can. However, SleepScore Labs does make a companion app to track snoring called Do I Snore or Grind?, which based on our limited testing seemed more sensitive, and possibly more accurate.

How Sleep Cycle Works

Sleep is the platform on which nutrition, exercise and mindfulness reside. But these pillars for your health arent nearly as efficient if your sleeps not working. Some sleep a lot, like the endearing sloth that clocks in about 15-18 hours per day. But the mighty elephant only logs 2 hours per night. But what does a normal sleep cycle look like for humans? We end up somewhere in between, most of us needing 7 to 9 hours each night to recover and restore.

Sleep Cycle helps you to better health through better sleep. At its heart, it tracks your sleep cycles by listening to your sounds. It analyses those sounds by help of ever-evolving machine learning algorithms, and presents the results to you and helps you understand your sleep with unique data analysis and graphs. The habits that influence it and what you can do to improve your rest and recovery.

How Much Sleep Do You Need

Your need for sleep and your sleep patterns change as you age, but this varies significantly across individuals of the same age.; There is no magic number of sleep hours that works for everybody of the same age.; Babies initially sleep as much as 16 to 18 hours per day, which may boost growth and development .; School-age children and teens on average need about 9.5 hours of sleep per night.; Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep a night, but after age 60, nighttime sleep tends to be shorter, lighter, and interrupted by multiple awakenings.; Elderly people are also more likely to take medications that interfere with sleep.;

In general, people are getting less sleep than they need due to longer work hours and the availability of round-the-clock entertainment and other activities.;

Many people feel they can “catch up” on missed sleep during the weekend but, depending on how sleep-deprived they are, sleeping longer on the weekends may not be adequate.;

Does using the Sleep Cycle App to get better sleep in Medical School work?

The first stage of sleep is light stage sleep. This occurs right after you doze off and only lasts for a few minutes. The second stage is also a relatively light stage of sleep. To give some perspective, a power nap could be used to describe a sleep session that only involved the first two stages. Its during the next two stages that move into a deep sleep. Finally comes REM sleep. This is where you dream and get your most restful sleep. During an ideal sleep cycle, you will experience this five or six times.

What Is Poor Sleep Quality

Not surprisingly, poor sleep quality is characterized by the opposite factors. If it takes you longer than 30 minutes to fall asleep, if you wake up during the night more than once, or if it takes you longer than 20 minutes to drift back asleep after waking up, your sleep quality is considered poor. Youre likely to feel tired the next day, even if you get the recommended number of sleep hours. It is important to note that there are some individual and age differences in these factors. For example, its common to wake up more frequently during the night as we get older. As long as you return to sleep quickly, this wont hurt your sleep.

What About Using A Fitbit Apple Watch Or Other Wrist Wearable

If you already use a wearable with sleep-tracking capabilities, you may be perfectly happy sticking with what you have rather than buying a separate app to use on your phone. Wearables track your sleep automaticallyno setup before bed. In 2018, we tested the sleep-tracking features on a Fitbit tracker, a Garmin tracker, and an Apple Watch against four apps. At the time, the wearables were frequently off compared with the apps, usually over-reporting sleep, though they did give an accurate picture of sleep trends over time. This is something youll see as long as you consistently use the same device over the long term.

The biggest advantage of sleep-tracking phone apps over wearables lies in the extra features, such as smart alarms and sounds that help you fall asleep. Wearables can buzz you awake, which is a plus if you sleep with a partner who has a different schedule, and they can nudge you to get ready for bed just as they nudge you to get up and move during the day. Theyre great for people who prefer not to bring a phone into the bedroom, and they can be helpful in determining how hard you should work out the next day based on your sleep.

How Do You Measure Good Sleep Quality

Sleep quality is the measurement of how well youre sleepingin other words, whether your sleep is restful and restorative. It differs from sleep satisfaction, which refers to a more subjective judgment of how you feel about the sleep you are getting. Sleep quality is more complicated to measure than sleep quantity, but its not entirely subjective. Guidelines give an overview of sleep quality goals, and they include some individual and age differences. Four items are generally assessed to measure sleep quality:

Sleep latency: This is a measurement of how long it takes you to fall asleep. Drifting off within 30 minutes or less after the time you go to bed suggests that the quality of your sleep is good.

Sleep waking: This measures how often you wake up during the night. Frequent wakefulness at night can disrupt your sleep cycle and reduce your sleep quality. Waking up once or not at all suggests that your sleep quality is good.

Wakefulness: This measurement refers to how many minutes you spend awake during the night after you first go to sleep. People with good sleep quality have 20 minutes or less of wakefulness during the night.

Sleep efficiency: The amount of time you spend actually sleeping while in bed is known as sleep efficiency. This measurement should ideally be 85 percent or more for optimal health benefits.;

Apptitude: Sleep Cycle Didnt Help Him Wake Refreshed Or At All

Sleep cycle 2

I dont sleep. Well, that might not be totally accurate. I can fall asleep easily but frequently wake several times during the night. Often, I get out of bed to work for an hour or two. In the search for answers,Ive taken two lab-based sleep tests, which indicated I have minor sleep apnea.

My Fitbit, which I bought to measure physical activity, also tracks my sleep. Typical results show Im awake three times a night, restless 11 to 15 times, and tired when the alarm goes off.

Since Im an expert on sleeping, I thought it would be cool to test an app that doesnt just track sleep but is designed to help users rise more refreshed. Sleep Cycle bills itself as a bio-alarm clock that analyzes your sleep patterns and wakes you when you are in the lightest sleep phase. This is preferable to being disturbed during deep sleep, which, according to Sleep Cycles Web site, can turn your day into one long zombie marathon.

I was skeptical that the app could detect my sleep phases since there was nothing to physically connect me to my smartphone. I wear my Fitbit on my wrist. Sleep Cycle uses the accelerometer on your phone, which you place at the head of the bed under the bottom sheet, to sense movement as you sleep. The app did seem to pick up all my movements, but when I left the bed in the middle of the night, it thought I was in deep sleep.

I dont think Ill need it. I already know I dont sleep.

How Do Sleep Apnea Apps Work

Its important to note that no app on your phone can take the place of a formal diagnosis from your doctor and a supervised, comprehensive treatment plan. Sleep apnea is serious and can lead to a variety of life-threatening conditions. When sleep apnea is left untreated, the risk of premature death from any cause triples. Consider these apps as a way to supplement a doctors care or keep track of symptoms while you look for a diagnosis.

Sleep tracker apps work in a few different ways. They:

  • Measure the amount of your sleep: Your phones accelerometer registers movement and stillness to figure this out
  • Calculate the quality of sleep: Sleep apnea apps can record noise, including snoring and the gasping intake of air that is the hallmark symptom of sleep apnea
  • Monitor how much time you spend in each stage of sleep: Wearable sleep tracking apps can measure your heart rate to estimate the amount of time you spend in each stage of sleep
  • Assess the quality of your sleep hygiene: The temperature of the room, the level of darkness, and the amount of your movement all play a role in assessing the quality of your sleep

Some of the best sleep apnea apps also measure how much exercise you get daily and may also be able to track diet, stress levels, and heart rate to see if your waking hours are affected by a poor nights sleep.

All of these factors combine to help paint a better picture of your sleep challenges, which may lead to better diagnosis.

What Exactly Do Sleep Trackers Monitor

As with all technological devices, the features of these sleep trackers will vary. But they usually share a few common capabilities.;

These include:

  • Sleep quality tracking. Sleep trackers can detect when your sleep is interrupted. This lets you know when you’re being disturbed, tossing and turning, or waking during the night.
  • Sleep duration tracking.;These trackers monitor the time you are inactive. This allows you to know when you fall asleep at night and when you first begin to wake each morning.
  • Sleep phase tracking.;An REM sleep tracker tracks your sleep phases. It then sets your alarms to go off during periods in which you are in lighter sleep phases instead of REM sleep. This makes waking up easier and avoids breaking your crucial REM sleep cycles.
  • Lifestyle factor tracking.;Some trackers ask you to enter;information about your lifestyle and even work-life balance;that could be affecting your sleep.;This could include your diet, caffeine and sugar consumption, and;daily stress levels.
  • Environmental factor tracking.;Some sleep trackers can record environmental factors in your sleep environment. For example, they may record the temperatures and amount of ambient light in your bedroom. This enables you to optimize your sleeping environment. For example, you can minimize light or keep your room at cooler temperatures.

How Sleep Trackers Work

Tracking sleep at home is hard. In fact, its like trying to track an earthquake, said Thomas Penzel, PhD, research director of the Interdisciplinary Center of Sleep Medicine at Charité University in Berlin. Just as you cant sit inside the earth and watch tectonic plates shift, you cant directly peer into your own brain as youre sleeping. So you need proxies. In a sleep lab, scientists use medical-grade equipment and sensors to record brain activity, eye movements, body movements, heart rate, oxygen intake, and more. This process, called polysomnography, is the most reliable method of sleep tracking.

Unfortunately, the sleep trackers designed and currently available for home use cant read brain waves and eye movements, which most reliably track stages of sleep, so instead they guesstimate based on less accurate signs. The current technologies include the following:

Movement tracking: Accelerometersmore commonly used to measure sleep in fitness trackers and other wearables than in phone appsinterpret stillness as sleep and movement as wakefulness. But an accelerometer is not very accurate when you use one alone because it may perceive you as being asleep when youre merely lying still staring at the ceiling. And if you toss and turn a lot in your sleep, the accelerometer will register that youre awake. Thats why sleep tracking typically pairs movement tracking with other technologies, such as optical heart-rate monitoring.
