Sleep Stages and the Fitbit Sleep Score
Fitbits sleep feature estimates sleep stages using a combination of movement and heart-rate patterns. When you havent moved for about an hour, your tracker or smartwatch assumes that youre asleep. Additional data, such as the length of time of movements that are indicative of sleep behavior , can also help confirm that youre asleep.
While youre sleeping, your device tracks the beat-to-beat changes in your heart rate, known as heart rate variability . These numbers fluctuate as you transition between light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep stages. When you sync your device in the morning, Fitbit uses movement and heart rate patterns to estimate sleep cycles from the previous night.
Most Fitbit users get a sleep score between 72 and 83. Typical sleep score ranges are:

When you set your Fitbit or Jawbone UP device to “sleep mode,” it monitors your movements. When you sync your device the next morning, the software translates those movements into sleep data. If you’ve ever edited your sleep times the next morning, you’ll have seen a glimpse into how this worksdata about your movement during “awake” time gets re-analysed when you tell the software you were actually asleep then, and you then see it charted as sleep data.
This method of using a device to track movements in order to measure sleep is called actigraphy.

In addition to the expected step tracking and reminders to move when youve been sitting too long, using the tracker outside for walks, runs, and bike rides is a cinch. I found the screen easy to read thanks to its increased brightness , and responsive to my touch, even while I was dripping in sweat. To start recording a workout, you scroll over to the exercise shortcuts, select the type of activity you’re looking for, and tap the screen to press play. If you have your phone with you, the built-in GPS connects almost immediately and I didnt experience any disconnect or delays during my workouts. If you don’t bring your phone, the GPS takes longer to connectabout 15 to 20 seconds. However, you don’t need to wait for the GPS to connect before taking off. The Charge 5 will estimate where your activity began and adjust the distance traveled. In my tests, the tracker accurately determined where I started exercising.

If youve been using a Fitbit tracker to monitor your sleep, then you know how important movement is to signaling when you fall asleep, wake up, or stir. But in order to determine your sleep stageshow long you spend in light, deep, and Rapid Eye Movement sleepmovement alone is not enough.
During sleep studies, most sleep stages are scored based on brain waves, says Michael Grandner, MD, director of the Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona in Tucson and a Fitbit sleep consultant. Except during REM sleep when doctors are also looking for eye movements and a lack of muscle activity.
In other words, you cant determine light or deep sleep based on movement alone. You need another signal, says Grandner. You need something else that is going on in the body that differentiates REM from other stages of sleep.
So whats that second signal? Heres a hint: Its something many Fitbit trackers can already trackheart rate!
What New Features Does The Charge 5 Have
The Charge 5’s new features set it apart from other trackers.
Though the latest addition to Fitbits Charge collection looks similar to its predecessors, it has a few new upgraded featuresand a higher price tag, retailing for about $180. The Charge 5 is somewhat slimmer than the Charge 4 , and even more comfortable to wear all day long. The company claims the screen is twice as bright as the Charge 4s, which makes for easy viewing in the sun .
The Charge 5 also includes electrodermal activity sensors, previously introduced on the Fitbit Sense smartwatch but new to the Charge collection, which evaluate electrical changes in your skin and tell you how stressed you are on a scale of one to 100. The sensors are on the sides of the screen to use them, you start an EDA scan in the menu and pinch your thumb and forefinger around them for three minutes.

Wear Your Fitbit On Your Wrist
Some Fitbit models, like the Inspire 2 and the original Inspire, allow you to wear your Fitbit in a clip.
Unfortunately, when you wear your Fitbit in a clip and set your Inspire to on-clip mode, the heart rate sensors automatically turn off.
That means that your Fitbit in the clip-position can only record sleep in the three general categories of awake, restless, and asleep since it doesnt record any heart rate data.
So for folks who wear their Fitbits in a clip or pendant when sleeping, try wearing it on your wrist and see if that makes a difference.
When you wear your Fitbit on your wrist and set it to wrist mode, it automatically detects when you are sleeping and records your sleep stages using your heart rate information.
Thats why you must check that your Fitbit is set to on-wrist and not on-clip mode in the Fitbit Settings app.
Setting A Sleep Schedule And Reminders To Stick To It
One of the things I really liked during the month is the option to set a sleep goal / schedule and then get reminders to stick to it.
In the App settings, you can input your target sleep schedule. Since Im a bit of a night owl, I went with bedtime at 12:30 a.m. and wake up at 8:30 a.m.
You can limit the days for your schedule if you like, but I know I personally benefit from a regular 7 day a week pattern.
Following that, you can ask for a reminder to help you wind down for sleep, which I set an hour before at 11:30 p.m.
Every night I then received both a notification on my phone and a vibrating reminder on my wrist to encourage me to stick to that bedtime. And in theory, start winding down by putting aside any late night work, and reading a book or relaxing rather than watching the next episode of my favorite TV series.

Awake: When it comes to being awake during the night, many of us think that waking up at all is bad news. Turns out, waking up during the night is a normal part of sleep. In fact, waking up anywhere in the ballpark of 10-30 times in a single evening is normal.
So, if youre one of those people who roll over a few times during the night or get up to pee once or twice, youre just like everyone else. Theres nothing to be super worried about.
Light Sleep: Light sleep occurs when your body starts to slow down at night, its that moment when you start to fall asleep, but you could be easily woken. The best example is probably those moments when youre commuting and fall asleep on the train or in the passenger seat of your co-worker’s car. When youre in light sleep, you may be aware of what is going on around you, and someone can wake you up easily but youre still asleep.
During this sleep stage, your heart rate decreases slightly from what it is when youre awake. Just because you can be woken easily doesnt mean this isnt a useful stage light sleep helps a ton with mental and physical recovery, so you can feel better after an hour of light sleep than you did before you started to snooze.
