Let us first get some insight on how the Sleep application works in gear Fit, there are two modes of recording your sleep in Gear fit Sleep Application Manual mode and Automatic mode.
In Manual mode, you need to click on the Start button when you are going to sleep and after you wake up from your nap click on the Stop button which will then record the duration of your sleep.
In Automatic mode that should be set will automatically record your sleep cycles on its own without clicking anything before or after you sleep. Your gear fit will detect the lack of body movements for one minute and starts the Timer. If you are sleeping for less than 2 hours and wake up in 30 minutes the sleep cycle is not recorded.
How Can I View My Sleep Data Using Google Fit
As indicated on android.gadgethacks.com, The data you just recorded will also now sync with your Google Fit account, so you can open the Fit app to the main screen and check out the Sleep section. Alternatively, if you hit the Journal tab, you can get a quick overview of your sleep data entries for easy access.
Moreover, if you would like to view your sleep data quickly, you can use Google Fit but perhaps it will show you more details than the ones you are able to see in Sleep as Android, so it might get confusing at times, just while you get used to reading the information displayed.

Though there’s no altimeter, Samsung says the Fit2 can still detect when you walk up stairs. The other sensors packed inside include GPS, heart rate monitor, gyroscope, barometer and accelerometer.
Again, the GPS is completely built-in so you don’t have to carry your phone around during outdoor workouts. You can also see a map of your running or biking route all displayed on the screen.
As mentioned, Gear Fit2 can auto-detect workouts, or you can manually choose one. After you select a type of workout, you can pick a goal for that workout. The goals vary but examples include target pace, duration, distance or calories or you can choose to have no goal at all. The Fit2 can even read status updates to your connected headphones at various intervals.
Certain activities like lunges and crunches also had instructions that the Gear Fit2 displayed on screen, similar to Fitbit Blaze’s fitness app.
The Fit2’s auto-tracking was fairly accurate and it was able to calculate when I started walking at a ‘good pace’ until the time I stopped. Walking around my neighbourhood and walking hurriedly to appointments at E3 would trigger the Fit2. It would vibrate, tell me I was keeping up the pace and showed a timer that had started tracking several minutes before which reassured me it was logging everything accordingly.

How To Tag Heart Rate
You can turn on continuous heart rate tracking for a complete look of your heart on a 24-hour basis or you can manually take your heart rate.
For tracked workouts, heart rate monitoring kicks in immediately. Whichever way you want to do it, you can also tag heart rate each time you use it. That way you can keep track of what’s what in your 24-hour log. There aren’t a lot of options to choose from – in fact there should be an option to voice-input your own tag, but for now there’s a preset list of choices.

Performance And Battery Life
There’s one other problem with using the Fit as a smartwatch: The display itself may be fun to look at, but the actual contents on the screen aren’t. That’s because the panel is so narrow that I had to strain my neck every time I wanted to read the Fit display in horizontal mode. Vertical mode solves this problem, but introduces another issue: You can only read a few characters of text on each line, forcing you to scroll even further down the screen just to get to the end of the message.
On the plus side, scrolling isn’t terribly difficult since the screen is reasonably responsive. But unless your phone is in another room and you’re not able to get up and grab it, using two hands to scroll through a notification on your watch pretty much defeats the purpose — it’d be faster to just pick up the phone.
Meanwhile, I never had any problems pairing the Fit to my Galaxy S5, nor did I have any issues maintaining my Bluetooth connection. Also, the built-in accelerometer makes it possible to wake the display up when I raise my arm, but the performance here is hit-or-miss. On multiple occasions, I found myself grossly exaggerating my movements because simply raising my arm didn’t actually turn it on.
Samsung Galaxy Active 2 & Sleep Phase Measurements
People go through different phases and stages. when they sleep. If youve looked at the sleep data in the Samsung Health app, you are probably already aware of most of these phases. There are two-phases: REM and Non-REM. The Non-REM phase is broken down into three different stages. They are literally called Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3. Here is a brief description of each phase.
|Stage 1||You are barely asleep. The slightest noise or lighting change can wake you up. This is the first stage after you fall asleep and typically last 5 10 minutes.|
|Stage 2||You are in a light asleep, and a little hard to wake up. Your body temperature and heart rate decrease, and you begin to move around a bit less. This stage happens after Stage 1 and may last for 15 60 minutes.|
|Stage 3||You are in a deep sleep, and it is the hardest to wake you up. Youll feel sleepy if you are woken up. You may move around some, but not very much. This stage happens after Stage 2 and may last for 20 40 minutes.|
|REM||Known as Rapid Eye Movement, this is the deepest sleep stage though your body becomes more active. Characterized by moving of the eyes, your heart rate also picks up and varies, but your brain paralyzes your muscles making you very still.|
There are also other changes, such as brain wave activity, but I tried to only mention the differences that your watch can detect: motion and heart rate.

So Is It Still Worth Wearing Your Fitness Tracker To Bed At Night
Most smartwatches and fitness trackers have whats called a tri-axis accelerometer in them. Thats a techy way of saying theres an accelerator in your wearable.
Its a small device made up of axis-based motion sensing and it tracks movement in every direction. Some even come with a gyroscope to measure orientation and rotation.
Using a process called actigraphy, your tracker translates your wrist movements into sleep patterns.
As you can imagine its not always accurate and theres some guesswork involved in that process. Thats because actigraphy just tracks one thing movement. And theres so much more to monitoring sleep than simply tossing and turning.
Brainwaves, eye movements, and breathing are also required to determine the difference between deep REM sleep and light sleep.
Psychologist Kelly Glazer Baron, PhD, MPH from the Rush University Medical Center, published a report in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine on the impact of fitness trackers on sleep.
Baron states that part of the problem lies in the technology itself. Citing multiple studies, Barons report states that these increasingly popular devices “are unable to accurately discriminate stages of sleep.” As Baron explains, “They are not able to differentiate between light and deep sleep.” Furthermore, “they might call it sleep when you’re reading in bed.”
How To Record Sleep In Automatic Mode
- As done in the manual mode, you have to scroll to the left or right to access the Sleep App.
- Here you need to Scroll once again to the left side of the Sleeping screen to get the options for turning on the Automatic mode
- From the options click on the Auto button and then tap Tick to select it.
- In Automatic Mode, you need to make sure that you are wearing the device on your wrist all through your sleep and not place it on the table.
- As we have mentioned earlier, the Sleep app will keep a track on your body movements and then record the Sleep cycles and store it in gear fit memory to check and keep a track of your Sleep.

Samsung Gear Fit Up Close
Is the Gear Fit doing everything I’d dreamed of? And is it even doing a great job as a watch?
The future of wearable tech has come to this: a pile of fitness bands, and a growing pile of smartwatches. But none of them all that useful, despite their attempts to be. Can something in the middle offer the best of both worlds, and be a fitness band plus a smart watch all in one?
The Gear Fit is close. And yet it’s also farther than I’d thought. It does a lot of things, but it’s not particularly great at any one of them.
With the latest firmware update, which adds sleep tracking, a vertical orientation mode, and more watch face customization, the Fit is a bit better as a watch. But it’s still not a fantastic smartwatch, and it’s definitely not the fitness band it should be. That elongated display, no matter what orientation it’s in, isn’t as useful as a more standard rectangular screen. But most importantly, the Fit lacks the automatic smarts and next-level software you’d expect from a gadget this forward-looking. It’s a step forward from last year, but not enough of a leap.

Gear Fit: Battery And Compatibility
According to Samsung, the Gear Fit2’s 200 mAh battery should last up to three to four days, or five if you’re generous with usage. My time spent using the Fit2 involved a screen brightness of six, receiving and sending text messages, getting calendar, call, app and social notifications plus using it during exercise. With all that running, the Fit2 only lasted two days at most.
Typically, I don’t have all my notifications on since I prefer to ignore Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and I only have Slack on during work hours. I think by toning down the notifications, I could get two and half or three days but that’s an experiment for another time.
Charging requires about an hour or so depending on how dead the Gear Fit2 is. It comes with a proprietary USB cradle that can sit on your nightstand or desk.
Gear Fit2 isn’t the mess Gear S was in terms of compatibility, yet it’s still sorely lacking in this area since it will only work with handsets running Android 4.4 and above. Most Android Wear devices have limited capabilities with iOS but nonetheless, it is still an available option. I’m hoping round three will let Apple users enjoy Samsung’s devices too.
Option To Edit Your Sleep Time Target
If you configure your profile information such as your age and gender, your Samsung Health will automatically preconfigure your sleep time target, so pretty much, you dont have to do anything else. However, the targets may not be as accurate to reflect your daily routine. For instance, if you usually work the night shift then, having a sleeping target from 11 pm to 6 am may not be realistic.
If this is the case then you will need to adjust your sleep target yourself within the app. Again, just tap on the sleep tile and you will find a three-dot menu in the top-right corner where you will see the option Set target. From here, simply swipe on the time bars for the options Bedtime and Wake-up time to set your sleep target manually.
Samsung Health Sleep Stages
Data recorded by your watch is stored in the Samsung Health app. This is an app on your watch, as well as your phone. Data is automatically uploaded from your watch to your phone.
The Samsun Health app records sleep in four different stages: Awake, Light, Deep, and REM. Youve probably already realized that this doesnt exactly match up to the actual sleep stages Ive already described. Here is a description of each stage, and how the line-up to the real sleep stages.
Awake: Times when your awake at night, whether you are aware of it or not. This does not correlate to any of the sleep stages.
Light: Times when you have just fallen asleep to when you are in actual light sleep. This stage includes both stage 1 and stage 2 sleep stages.
Deep: Times when you are in a deep sleep. This stage directly lines up with sleep stage 3, your deepest sleep before reaching REM.
REM: Known as Rapid Eye Movement, this is the deepest sleep stage though your body becomes more active. Characterized by moving of the eyes, your heart rate also picks up and varies, but your brain paralyzes your muscles making you very still.
This sleep stage directly matches with the REM stage previously described.

How Heart Rate Is Used To Track Sleep
Heart rate together with how much you are moving is very useful in determining when you are asleep and in which sleep phase.
Awake: Our heart rate is typically higher when we are awake compared to when we are asleep, except for REM sleep.
Stage 1 & Stage 2: Your heart rate begins to slow down, but doesnt reach the lowest level yet, as your body is still somewhat active and needs oxygen from the blood.
Stage 3: Your heart rate reaches its lowest level. Your body doesnt need as much oxygen as other times because it is completely relaxed.
REM: Your heart rate is more variable, and may reach the same levels as when you are awake. Although your muscles are motionless, your brain is very active.
