Sleep Schedule: Set A Sleep Goal And Create Schedules
Sleep Schedule is a feature that helps you create a bedtime routine. But for it to work, you should set a sleep goal and a specific sleep schedule beforehand.
To set up a Sleep Schedule on your iPhone, you need to do the following:
Now, select Set Your First Schedule. At the top of the page, you can choose the days that will apply for this schedule. Then enter a preferred time for falling asleep and waking up.
If you scroll a bit lower, you can also customize the alarm clock or disable it. When you are ready, choose Next.
After you finish setting up this feature, your iPhone will ask whether you want to enable Sleep Mode and Wind Down. You can do it right away by following the instructions, or choose to skip them and set them up later. We include more information on this below.
With this feature, you can create a different schedule for every day of the week. For example, you can set one schedule for weekdays and another one for weekends. You can also choose whether you prefer an alarm to wake you up or not.
How To View Sleep Trends In Health On Iphone
Tap View Health Trends.
Tap Show More Data to view more details.
Health Trends determine a baseline for you depending on the data that the Health app pulls in from your Apple Watch and other apps for certain areas. When the Health app detects a change, whether higher or lower, it will notify you. But if the data point is consistent, you’ll find it in the Not Trending section under Health Trends as a Daily Average.
While watchOS 8 actively added Respiratory Rate measurements as a feature, I am currently still using a Series 5 Apple Watch with watchOS 7 that is paired to my iPhone 12 Pro with iOS 14.7.1. However, I have an iPhone 11 Pro running the latest iOS 15 developer beta, and I can see my Respiratory Rate: Sleep data, even though my Apple Watch is running watchOS 8 nor paired with my iOS 15 device. It seems that this data is collected retroactively on the Watch itself.
So How Much Sleep Do You Need
If you’ve never really thought about it before, it can be hard to guesstimate exactly how much sleep your body needs.
While everyone is different, there are some general guidelines, based on age, to help you come up with a figure. The guidelines, published in Sleep Health: Journal of the National Sleep Foundation, were penned by a panel of experts that looked at 320 studies on the matter.
Teenagers : 8-10 hours
Young adults : 7-9 hours
Adults : 7-9 hours
Older adults : 7-8 hours
It’s worth taking these guidelines seriously, as getting yourself into long-term “sleep debt” has been linked to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. That’s why iPhone’s Bedtime mode comes in handy.

What Apple Watch Devices Work With Sleep Tracking
WatchOS 7 and the Sleep app associated with it are only compatible with particular Apple Watches. These include the Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 4, Apple Watch Series 5, Apple Watch Series 6, and Apple Watch SE.
If you own an original Apple Watch or Series 1 or 2 model, you can’t use the Sleep app. You’ll also need an iPhone that runs iOS 14 which means anything newer than an iPhone 6s.

Maintaining a sleep schedule and creating a restful environment before going to bed are the key elements of having a better sleep. Usually, the biggest disturbances when we are trying to fall asleep are our phones and other gadgets.

How To Read Your Sleep Data
Once you set up these sleep features, your iPhone will begin estimating when you get into bed and when you get out of bed, based on when you put down and pick up your phone. It also tracks how often and for how long you pick up your phone throughout the night.
You can view these records in the Health app. Time spent in bed appears as a blue line. Any gaps in the line show when you picked up your phone. You can scroll through time to view the history of your data, change the view from week to month, and dive into other stats such as average time in bed and average time asleep.
If you only use your phone , you won’t really have an accurate record of when you fell asleep and woke up. You can enter those estimated times manually, however, if it’s something you want to track and monitor. If you do have a compatible device, you can make sure your phone captures and saves those types of data points automatically.
Stopping Or Snoozing A Sleep Session With Alarms And Audio Recordings
To stop the sleep session that you started recording with your Apple Watch follow these steps:
Open Pillow on your Apple Watch
Swipe horizontally to bring up the Stop and Snooze buttons
Tap the Stop button to stop the session or the Snooze button to snooze the alarm.
When you tap Stop make sure your iPhone and Apple Watch are connected via Bluetooth or Wifi.

How To Set Up Apple Watch Sleep Tracking
1. Open the Health app on iPhone. Tap Browse on the bottom-right of the screen, then Sleep.
2. Under Set Up Sleep, tap Get Started.
3. Tap Next. Use the plus and minus buttons to set a sleep goal, then tap Next.
4. Use the circular slider to set a sleep schedule. Tap the weekdays you want the schedule to apply to, then tap Add.
5. Tap Add Schedule to add another sleep schedule. When you’re finished, tap Next.
6. Follow the on-screen prompts to enable or skip Sleep app features like Sleep Screen , Wind Down, and enabling sleep tracking. When you’re finished, tap Done.
Option : Use Your Apple Watch
Products such as the Fitbit, Motiv Ring, and Oura Ring have been touted for their ability to track activity metrics, including sleep, via their own apps. The Apple Watch, for all of its utility, does not feature a native way to track sleep.
Fortunately, third-party apps fill in for Apple’s oversight. Sleep trackers for the Apple Watch include AutoSleep, Pillow, HeartWatch, Sleep Watch, and Sleep Tracker, but our favorite out of the bunch is Sleep++. Once synced to your iPhone, the sleep data can be updated in both the Sleep++ app as well as the Health app .

Using the Apple Watch as the sensor by way of its accelerometer, Sleep++ can detect movement and create a granular view of your sleep. The app is less focused on sleep cycles and alarms and more focused on showing you how long and well you slept.
Sleep++ will not trigger an alarm, nor does it need to be activated manually . When movement is not detected in the late evening, the app begins collecting data, assuming that you have fallen asleep . Upon rise, when movement resumes, the app will know to end the data collecting.

Whether you view the blue graph on your Apple Watch or on your iPhone, the visual is very clear: Dark blue indicates sleep whereas light blue strips indicate movement and disruption. Sleep++ will provide stats for restful and restless periods. Ideally, you will keep the restless percentage as a single digit.

Does The Apple Watch Have Enough Battery To Track Sleep
Battery life has been pointed to as a reason why Apple might have been reluctant to offer its own sleep tracking app in the past. Apple still states an 18 hour battery life for its smartwatch, which hasnt changed since the first Watch. Any battery improvements have been canceled out by features like the Apple Watch 5s always-on screen.
To make sure you have enough battery to track sleep through the night, Apple requires your watch to be charged to at least 30% to enable it.
If you dont, the Watch will prompt you to charge before going to bed. When its got enough juice, your phone will alert you that its ready to join you in bed. In our time we found that sleep tracking sucked up around 20% battery on average, so its definitely going to impact how much battery youre left with in the morning.

Data Tracking With Pillow
At the end of a sleep session, Pillow will tell you the number of hours you slept. Swipe down the screen to see the quality of sleep, both for the previous night and past nights. You can also launch Pillow on your iPhone to run it from there or just see what data it records and how it works with your Apple Watch.
In the settings for Pillow on your iPhone, you can opt to always sync the data with the Health app, or you can manually sync it by tapping the Sync button in the Apple Watch app. After the data has synced, open the Health app and segue to the section for Sleep. By default, the app shows all data from any sleep app for which you’ve given permission.

How To Finetune Your Data
If youre dissatisfied with aspects of the measurements rolling in, there are copious options to tweak them. Three to be precise.
1 Changing the sensitivity level for sleep detection
Say you feel like AutoSleep in actuality robs you of some well earned sleep, simply because youre prone to moving or twitching a lot when asleep. It could be to a degree where your sensors infer you have awoken, even though you havent. Conversely, if you dont move notably but stare at the ceiling wide awake, you might want to consider turning up the sensitivity lever. To track your sleep analysis in iOS 13, open the Clock app, tap the Bedtime tab, then tap “Show more in Health.” Your Sleep Analysis shows the amount of time that you spend in bed or asleep.
Bedtime in the Clock app tracks time that you spend in bed, but not how much you sleep or move. Your Apple Watch also doesn’t track sleep or time in bed.
To track how much time you sleep, try using a sleep tracker with the Health app. You can also manually enter how much time you sleep: Open the Clock app, tap the Bedtime tab, then tap “Show more in Health.” In the upper-right corner, tap Add Data. Learn more about the Health app.

How Your Iphone Can Help With Your Sleep
Since the release of iOS 8, the Health app has included a section for this kind of sleep data. Think of the Health app as the hub through which things like fitness, diet, and sleep are collected and aggregated where you can park this information and observe averages, trends, and patterns. Other apps gather these data points and send that to the Health app if allowed.
For instance, your Clock app has Bedtime feature to help you take control of your sleep, and the data it collects at during the night can be synced to Apple Health. However, this does not get into granular details about your sleep quality.
Third-party apps can provide much more detail about how you sleep. For instance, Sleep Cycle uses the iPhone itself as a sleep monitor device to measure different stages of sleep, quality sleep, snore times, and more. Apps like Sleep++ or Beddit work with other gear to detect movement or details like heart rate and room temperature.
