How Do I Choose The Best Earplug For Snoring

Snoring. NO MORE. Blocking out snoring with double earplugs. ACTUALLY WORKS.

For earplugs to be most effective in blocking the highest amount of loud noise, i.e. snoring, you need to ensure that they have a high noise reduction rating . Ideally, you want to be looking at 25db or greater.

Secondly, you want them to be comfortable! It kind of defeats the whole purpose of trying to get a good night sleep if youve got something uncomfortable in your ear right?!

Are Earplugs Alone Enough To Block Snoring

Ear Plugs are lifesavers for many. However, even with the best earplugs available, snoring can sometimes still be too loud for a partner to happily sleep.

The majority of our customers find that earplugs work well enough to block partners snoring. Although, there is a small percentage of people who find that earplugs alone are not enough.

Before you decide to wedge your earplugs in your partners nostrils in the middle of the night There are other solutions to blocking noise

What if we told you that there was, in fact, an answer to earplugs not being enough to block sound, especially snoring? We have a simple device that has helped many people, for many years, achieve a good night sleep naturally!

An earplug with an NRR of 30 33db will reduce sound the l, but sometimes this may still not be enough to reach a good night sleep.

We have helped hundreds of people over the years successfully get to sleep with White Noise!

Now Lets Wear The Anc Headphones On Top Of The Earplugs At Normal Insertion Depth

This graph shows how much noise reduction, I obtained:

Again, the combination of ANC headphones and earplugs still significantly outperforms both headphones and earplugs worn alone.

In particular from 200 to 1000 Hz the difference is large.

So if you want relief from honking, barking, or chatter, wearing earplugs underneath the headphones can make a big difference, even at an average insertion depth.

Note: I also conducted the same test with the Moldex PuraFit at a normal insertion depth. The results were very similar. In fact, they were even slightly better, but I cant make sure I was getting exactly the same insertion depth.

Against low frequency noise from 40 to 125 Hz I got mixed results with a shallower insertion:

  • The combination of Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones and Hearos earplugs performed slightly worse than the Sony headphones alone, although I doubt I would notice the difference in daily life. Moreover, the noise reduction in this range was still very good.
  • The Bose QC35 still benefited from adding the earplugs but now the performance from 40 to 125 Hz was very similar to that of the Sony headphones worn alone.

Will They Work For You

How to Block Out Snoring Noise

So back to my test, where I tried to survive the all-night snoretrack. Yes, the Sleepbuds did sufficiently mask the sound of the snoring for both me and my partner. But that doesnt mean either of us got great sleep.

My brain was perturbed just enough by the sound of my own breathing that I couldnt get into deep sleep. I had the same problem when I tried wearing the Sleepbuds without the snoretrack playing in the bedroom. Even after a few days, it was hard for me to just forget the Sleepbuds were there.

Bose says I might eventually get used to wearing them. Jeffrey Ellenbogen, a sleep-medicine doctor and neurologist who consulted with Bose on developing Sleepbuds, says many learn to sleep with earplugs.

The major step forward here from Bose is that they can be very comfortably worn while resting ones head on a pillow which is a major problem for other existing ear buds, he says.

UCSFs Claman, who hasnt tested Sleepbuds, says he suspects I would respond differently than someone who is desperately sleep-deprived. Though Im the kind of light sleeper who can be awoken by a slamming door, perhaps the Sleepbuds introduced more disturbance than they resolved.

My partners Sleepbuds kept falling out of one ear, leading to an uncomfortable night. Getting the right fit is key to making Sleepbuds work it turns out each ear can be a different size.

Now if they could only make a gadget to turn off the noises inside your head when youre trying to fall asleep.

Coping With Noise During The Pandemic

I generally dont discuss the pandemic on this website as I prefer to leave anything that could be construed as medical advice to the medical experts.

However, in this case I would like to acknowledge that I understand many peoples homes have become a lot noisier in the last year.

More kids being homeschooled. More students studying at home, and trying their best to maintain some kind of social life at night. More people working from home. More puppies. People losing their jobs and not needing to go to bed and get up so early. Daily routines thrown into chaos.

Personally, I try my best to stick to the same kind of routine I had in 2019. In some ways, its not so hard for me because Ive worked from home for years. So that part didnt change, other than having my wife work at home too now. But the lack of social contact, sports, days out, combined with lockdowns and worry about going out, made it harder to be active.

Weve tried though. We exercise outdoors and at home. We do some yoga every morning. We turn the TV off some evenings and do other things. And most importantly, we stick to a regular bedtime and waking up time, even though we dont technically have to.

What has that got to do with noise? Well, I believe that staying active, taking steps to reduce stress in general, and having a stable routine all help with sleep in general. Even if noise is the main culprit for your lack of sleep, there may be other factors involved too.

Do You Snore Does Your Partner Know How Bad Their Snoring Is

Snoreclock and Snorelab are apps that detect and record snoring during the night. I have used Snoreclock for a couple of nights I had a snoring score of 2 to 3%. The first two red bars appeared while I was purposely sleeping on my back. I woke up and turned on my side:

So during recording nights, I snored only very occasionally. People who snore often dont know how loud and frequent their snoring is. Suggest to your partner to use an app like Snoreclock to record their sleep. Hearing themselves snoring and seeing all the red alarm bars that indicate detected snoring periods might be enough to convince them to get themselves checked out or change their sleeping position. You can also zoom in and hear what was actually going on during a particular snoring episode.

How To Use White Noise Machines

Looking to block out snoring without earplugs? Well, the next option available to you is white noise for snoring removal. Using a white noise machine is easymuch more comfortable than using earplugs.

All you have to do is plug them in , and leave them to run in the background. Over the course of the night, your machine will block out any unwanted noise. As we mentioned above, the reason is that white noise is easy for your brain to block out. Its just like a clock ticking.

White noise machines are perfect for the home, or for when youre traveling. You can find portable white noise machines that run on batteries, which allows you to use them when youre on-the-go. By contrast, you could use one that plugs into the outlet, giving it extended power overnight. Its all about what you prefer. These devices are small and light, so you can carry them in your luggage wherever you go.

If you have a plug-in machine, you obviously need access to power sockets to use it. That may not be possible on an aircraft or another form of transport, for example. You might also find that you do not like the sound that white noise machines make. Instead, you should look into the brown and pink machines instead. So if yours doesnt work for you, try one of those alternatives instead.

Here is a guide to white noise machines that we put together.

Why Sleep Fragmentation Is Harmful To Your Health

Theres no question about it: snoring leads to sleep fragmentation that can cause your internal clock to be all over the place. But thats not all. Sleep fragmentation can also lead to issues with memory, difficulty focusing, headaches, and fatigue throughout the day. You may also release more cortisol, which can lead to mood swings, delayed motor performance, and even decreased overall happiness. When sleep becomes fragmented, parasympathetic activation becomes more difficult.

Parasympathetic activation refers to the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which relaxes the body after a response to stress during a fight or flight situation. When parasympathetic activation takes place, the mind and body relax and begin to reduce anxiety. This process boosts the immune system and decreases blood pressure. If you sleep next to a snorer, chances are that you and your partner are both experiencing sleep fragmentation. Luckily, weve put together some strategies that you can use to make your life easier while sleeping next to a snorer.

Getting Further Away From The Snorer Is Of Great Benefit

For each doubling of the distance from the snoring source, you get a reduction of 6 dB in sound pressure level.

If the snorer sleeps in a different bed 2 meters away, you can block the snoring noise much easier than if it is your partner, snoring 30 cm from your ear. On the other hand, you might be able to convince your spouse to get checked for sleep apnea, wear a chin strap or sleep on the side, but your fellow student sharing the same dorm room might not be so forthcoming.

Wearing Ear Buds For A Peaceful Sleep

Listen to music using headphones if you do not like to wear earplugs. Noise can be blocked by other methods as well. Sound sleep is essential, irrespective of the preventive measure used. There is another advantage as well – snoring is masked out.

Move to a different room if people around you are not letting you sleep. Another solution is to wear them after you wake up in the middle of your sleep duration.
