Best Sleep Apps Of 2021

Why We Chose It: SleepScore is our best overall app as it is available for iOS and Android and offers many great features to track and improve your sleep.

  • Uses sonar technology to track your sleep

  • Syncs with wearables such as Apple Watch

  • Clear analysis of sleep patterns and easy-to-understand sleep score

  • Measures light and noise level in the bedroom to determine optimal conditions for sleep

  • You must start and stop the tracker for accurate tracking

  • Reviews state it does not function as well on Android-powered devices compared to iOS

As the most advanced sleep tracker on this list, SleepScore uses sonar technology to measure sleep habits from your nightstand. ResMed, the developer of SleepScore, has studied sleep for over a decade to provide expert advice and sleep insights. The app sends sonar waves from your phone to measure your breathing and any sounds, which allow it to track light, deep, and REM sleep and identify when you wake up during the night. The app formulates a sleep score to attach an objective number to your sleep quality to help with setting goals for better sleep. To use the sonar technology, you must leave your phone plugged in, above mattress level, and with the base of the phone pointed toward you .

Set Up Sleep On Apple Watch

Open the Sleep app on your watch . Tap the schedule, then select the Wake Up time if you wish to change it. Turn on an alarm if you need one to wake you up at the right time. Tap the time for Bedtime if you want to change that as well.

Return to the main screen and tap Full Schedule if you wish to turn off your Sleep Schedule for any specific nights or all nights. Here, you can also add a schedule and change your sleep goal or Wind Down time. Then just wear your watch to bed.

Check Your Current Sleep Session

Sleep Cycle

Important: In progress sleep session overviews are only available for Nest Hub users.

After you wake up, on your Fit apps home screen, youll find an overview of your current sleep session. It can take up to 30 minutes for the app to conclude that youre fully awake and not just disturbed or temporarily awake.

Until the session is complete, the “Woke Up” and “Time taken to wake up” will state “In progress.”

To delete a sleep session, you must wait at least 2 hours after the session ends. Then, you can delete your most recent sleep session.

Apple’s 11 Picks For Sleep Health Apps

In the Medical and Health and Fitness sections of Apple’s app store, the company often creates curated lists around particular health or wellness areas. While the app store isn’t transparent about its methodology, the list gives us an insight into what apps Apple is promoting and what apps consumers are seeing when they go looking for a particular kind of health app.

Sleep is an area of increasing interest to Apple, which has hired a number of sleep experts in the past and recently acquired sleep-tracking startup Beddit

Here are the nine apps Apple promotes in its “Sleep and Snooze” category in the app store.

Sleep Cycle alarm clock

Sleep Cycle provides both sleep monitoring, using the phone’s microphone and accelerometer, and a smart alarm clock that uses that data to wake users at an optimal moment in their sleep cycle. A longtime player in the market, Sleep Cycle launched the first version of this app way back in 2009.

The app is free, but a premium subscription for $29.99 adds a slew of additional features like heart rate monitoring, longer term tracking of trends, and tools for monitoring other factors that might affect sleep or be affected by sleep, such as weather or mood.

Similar to Sleep Cycle, Pillow includes sleep tracking and analysis and a smart alarm clock. Pillow also integrates into different parts of the Apple ecosystem, working with both Apple Health and the Apple Watch, which can glean additional information via its heart rate tracker.

What Our Users Say

Hands down the most complete sleep management app on Android. Urbandroid takes their mission seriously!

Sleep as Android has everything you could possibly need, and more. Thank you for this awesome app guys!

This app is unbelievably advanced. Its like some accidentally released secret military technology thats light-years ahead of anything Ive seen before on a phone. I feel like a James Bond with this thing.

Sleep as Android has it all. Sleep as Android is the benchmark of alarm clock apps. Just give it a try and you will find that you 100% love it, really cant miss here. Its that simple, seriously!

Alarm clock and sleep cycle tracker that wakes you gently in the optimal moment for pleasant mornings.

Common alarm clocks ignore your sleep cycles, they wake you on schedule no matter your are currently in your deep sleep. Waking up from deep sleep is unpleasant, it makes you tired and it may negatively affect your productivity during the whole day.

Sleep as Android is different. It tracks your sleep to find the optimal moment for your wake up. Waking up in light sleep is natural, gentle and it may only be compared to the experience of waking up without any alarm clock.

Good But Has Some Issues

It worked great up until recently. Before I say the problems, I do really like the sleep debt tracker and the alarm. The added noise for falling asleep is pretty great too, I like it. The downsides are it performs horribly, when I start the app I have to wait 2-3 minutes before I can even start tracking because it is completely frozen. This is on a new iPhone 11 Pro Max. I have reinstalled it and all that jazz and Ive just accepted the fact that it is optimized like garbage. I dont know if you could call it a problem but the second thing that bothered me is the mic can recognize things that arent you as you. I couldnt figure out why but for a couple weeks it kept saying my sleep quality was less than 20% and that I didnt sleep all night racking up sleep debt as high as 40 hours in one week. I fell asleep one night with my fan off and it went back to normal, turns out the app thought my fan was me snoring or rolling around and throwing the data way off. Overall good app but it can be inconvenient to use sometimes.

Best For Extra Features: Pillow

  • Best results when paired with an Apple Watch

  • Reviews state there is a recent reduction in the app functionality

Pillow, the sleep app by NeyBox Digital Ltd., has an average rating of 4.3 stars on the App Store and can be used to automatically track sleep. This sleep tracker app is compatible with an Apple Watch, but it can also be used in manual mode. We liked that this app offers the option of enabling audio recordings while you sleep, which is helpful for those who suspect that snoring or talking in their sleep is disrupting their sleep cycle. The sleep analysis includes a sleep cycle diagram and heart rate analysis, and it displays trends over time. Pillow regularly updates sleep tips to help you fall asleep and stay asleep and personalizes your insights over time.

Pillow is only available for iOS and costs $4.99 a month, $12.99 for three months, and $39.99 for a year. A one-week free trial is available. It is only available on iOS, but it syncs with the Apple Health app so you can have all your data in one place. If youre using it without an Apple Watch, you must input what time you fall asleep and what time you wake up, which can lead to inaccurate measurements.

How Does Apple Health Track Steps

If you are all about step tracking, Apple Health does that by using the accelerometer motion sensor inside of your iPhone to track movement. That’s the same motion sensor tech that’s used by smartwatches and fitness trackers.

If you wear a fitness tracker or smartwatch , those devices can be alternatively used to provide your step counter as long as they are compatible with Apple Health.

It’s important to note that Fitbit and Samsung devices aren’t compatible with Apple Health, however, most other wearables are.

These include:

Edit Your Sleep Schedule

Tap Open Sleep Options in Health to open the Health app, where you can turn on the switch for Sleep Schedule. Tap the Edit link under Full Schedule and set your usual times for going to sleep and waking up. You can also set different times for different days, such as one schedule for weekdays and another for weekends.

Under Additional Details, tap the entry for Sleep Goal and set the number of hours and minutes that you hope to sleep. Tap the entry for Wind Down to select the amount of time for winding down before bed. Tap the entry for Wind Down Shortcuts to set up any shortcuts youd like to apply during Wind Down. Finally, tap the entry for Options to confirm the options you set in the Sleep app and to set up a few more.

I Have A Different Pedometer/fitness Tracker How Can I Connect It To Flo

Android:Its possible to sync other pedometers/fitness trackers with Flo if they can be connected to Google Fit. Please check in your app settings if it can be synced with Google Fit, and if so, activate the connection. Then, youll need to connect Flo to Google Fit: More > Settings > Google Fit > Connect and follow the instructions.

iOS:On iOS devices, other fitness tracking apps can be connected to Flo via the Health app. Please check in your tracker settings if it can be connected to Health, and if so, activate the connection. Then, youll need to connect Flo to Health: More > Settings > the Health App > Connect and follow the instructions.

Choose Your Favorite Categories To Track

App Shopper: Sleep Cycle

  • Open the Health app and tap the Summary tab.
  • Tap Edit in the upper-right corner.
  • To add or remove a category from your favorites, tap it. Categories with a blue star  appear in your favorites.
  • When you’re finished, tap Done.
  • Your favorites show how you’re doing in each health category that day, like Mindful Minutes or Steps. To see more information about a category, tap it.

    Smart Beds And Sensors

If you are serious about tracking your sleep, try a smart mattress or dedicated sleep sensor, such as the iFit Sleep HR or Eight Sleep Tracker.

Sensors fit under or over your existing mattress to track movement, plus heart and respiratory rates. They use that data to tell you how long it takes you to fall asleep and how long you spent in each cycle of sleep throughout the night.

The Eight Sleep Mars+ smart mattress tracks your movement and heart rate as you sleep.

Smart mattresses do the same things, but also often include heating and cooling modes and other premium features.

Rather than having a fitness tracker pull double duty, the main benefit to a dedicated sleep tracker is accuracy. The secondary benefit is not having to wear a wristband in your sleep or worry about it dying throughout the night.

    Sleep Data And Information

How does the cloud backup my information?
Your data is associated with your account within the Sleeptracker cloud. If you get a new device, simply sign into your account and you will see all your recorded data.
How does my SmartMotion Base track my heart rate?
SmartMotion captures the motion generated from your heart beats and respiration cycles with highly-precise sensors in the Base.
    What is resting heart rate?
Your resting heart rate is how many times per minute your heart beats while you are at rest. Resting heart rate is an indicator of your basic fitness level and a strong predictor of cardiovascular health. A healthy adult range is between 60 and 80 bpm, while athletes can have a resting heart rate as low as 30 bpm.
Are there impacts that can affect the accuracy of my heart rate reading?
Due to the sensitive nature of the heart rate measurement, outside sources of motion can affect the accuracy of the reading. For example, if your adjustable Base has a vibration mode, your heart rate will not be readable while the vibration motors are running. Kids or pets on the bed may also interfere with the reading.
    What impacts my heart rate?
Everyones heart rate is different, so there are many factors that can affect it, including stress and diet.
Can I share my sleep information with others?
Currently, there is no option to share information with other users. We are working on adding this feature for later versions.

    Use Across Our Services

Some of our products can be used together using a linked account so that youre able to share information between our products. The purpose of doing so is to deliver even greater insights to you as youre using our services. You can control this to your own preference in our apps.

    Technical information

When you access Sleep Cycle, we collect technical information from the devices you use. The information we collect includes IP addresses, timestamps, log files, device type and operating system. We use the information we collect to improve and personalize the Services and to develop new ones. For example, we use the information to troubleshoot and protect against errors; perform data analysis and testing; conduct research and surveys; and develop new features and Services.

    Health And Wellness Apps

The vast array of general health and wellness apps available include nutritional apps like LoseIt and MyFitnessPal that help you track your eating and exercise habits and lose weight, fitness apps like Strava, Fitplan, and Aaptiv, sleep trackers like Sleep Cycle, and mental wellness apps like Calm, Headspace, and Happify.

âAs wearables evolve to be pretty commonly used by most people, many wellness apps like these can communicate with your wearables,â says health care futurist Rafael Grossman, MD, a surgeon at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in New Hampshire who performed the first Google Glass surgery. âAnd data from those third-party apps can be seamlessly consolidated into your Apple Health Kit or Google Fit, to give you a complete report on your health and activity, all in one place.â

    What About The Oura Ring

The Oura Ring is a Bluetooth-enabled, rechargeable sleep tracker made of lightweight titanium that you wear on your index, middle, or ring finger. We tested the Oura Ring over several months, including comparing it against SleepScore, Sleep Cycle, Pillow, and Sleep as Android, and have a full review of the device. While we think the SleepScore and Sleep Cycle provide sufficient sleep tracking for most people, the Oura Ring does offer additional, interesting insights, including heart rate and heart rate variability readings. However, the Oura Ring is more expensive than our app picks and isnt a very good fitness tracker, so it isnt as versatile as other wearables.

The Oura Rings sleep tracking wasnt significantly more or less accurate compared with our top app picks . But the heart rate and HRV readings are very accurate. There has even been research showing that these data points, along with the rings oxygen-rate and skin-temperature readings, could help detect some illnesses, such as COVID-19, before symptoms begin.

    Service And Hosting Providers

Sleep Cycle may share your personally identifiable information with third parties for the purpose of providing services to you. If we do this, such third parties use of your information will be bound by restrictions consistent with this Privacy Policy. We may store personal information in locations outside the direct control of Sleep Cycle .

    Best For Apple Watch: Sleepwatch

The best sleep tracking apps for Apple Watch and iPhone

    • Information is presented in a clear, concise way

    • Graphs are easy to understand

    • All metrics have definitions of what they mean and why it is important

    • Some analysis provided is very technical and difficult to understand

    • Bell curve comparison to other users is not necessarily a helpful metric

    • Does not track REM sleep

SleepWatch by BodyMatter automatically tracks sleep from information collected by your Apple Watch. This is the easiest app to use with this device, as it collects everything you need without you having to input your data. We liked that it gives you a sleep score to measure how well you slept and provides you with an in-depth analysis based on length of sleep, whether you were in light, deep, or disrupted sleep, and variations in heart rate throughout the night. All you need to do is wear your Apple Watch to bed and the app will do the rest. There is also the option to track behaviors such as late-night eating or alcohol consumption to help identify if certain behaviors impact the quality of your sleep.

SleepWatch has over 25,000 reviews and the average rating on the App Store is 4.7 stars, as of April 2021. • Insight For Better Sleep

Our personal interest in sleep tracking usually comes from a desire to sleep better. Unless you are struggling with insomnia, getting more sleep is mostly a question of time management and prioritization. The ability to effortlessly track your sleep and see trends over time is a huge game changer for many when it comes to recognizing the need to prioritize sleep.

Improving sleep quality, on the other hand, is more about lifestyle and activity choices made during the day. Knowing how your decisions during the day will affect your sleep at night unlocks the possibility of better, more informed decisions and lifestyle choices.

Compatible watches will occasionally offer personalized insight to help you understand your sleep better and how it affects performance during the day. You will also see tips to sleep better based on real-world data about your own stress, recovery, and physical activity patterns recorded during the day and night.

Apps like Doctor on Demand, Teladoc, GoodRx Care, Talkspace, and Zocdoc can connect you directly with a doctor for a virtual appointment or help you seek out and book local health care providers for in-person visits. More and more hospitals and health systems, like the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic, are also including the ability to participate in virtual visits in their own apps.

âThe pandemic dramatically accelerated the use of virtual visits, and I donât think weâre ever going to go back to pre-pandemic levels of in-person health care visits, as patients and physicians are discovering the compelling convenience and efficacy,â Kraft says. âEven before virtual Zoom or FaceTime with clinicians, weâve had ever-smarter chatbots that can help discern symptoms and triage problems via apps like these effectively at lower cost.â
