Is A Home Sleep Test Uncomfortable Or Painful

I Flunked The V.A. Sleep Test

While all sleep studies can come with some level of discomfort, home sleep tests are far more comfortable and convenient than in-lab sleep studiesnot to mention far cheaper in most cases, even with insurance. Rather than going to a sleep lab or hospital and trying to sleep in unfamiliar surroundings, HSTs allow you to sleep in your bed, at home, while still having your biometric data monitored. The device is small and relatively uncomplicated and you should be able to sleep normally while wearing it.

Indications For A Home Sleep Apnea Test

If you think you could have OSA, consult with your doctor or a sleep medicine professional to see if they can evaluate you to determine if youre at a high risk of developing or having moderate to severe OSA.

Certain risk factors and symptoms are indications for an HSAT, including:

  • If you snore loudly .
  • Your partner has seen your breathing stop while youre sleeping.
  • You feel fatigued, sleepy or tired during the daytime.
  • You are or have received treatment for high blood pressure.
  • You have a 40 cm or larger neck circumference.
  • You have a 35 kg/m2 body mass index.
  • You are of the male gender.

Having a minimum of three of these symptoms or risk factors could suggest youre at a higher risk of OSA and are indications for a home sleep apnea test. Your doctor will consider these factors to determine if a home sleep test is ideal for your situation to diagnose you with OSA.

Can You Fake Sleep Apnea Test And Fool The Doctor

If you are wondering can you fake sleep apnea test and fool the doctor, then you must know that it is not impossible. The reason for this is that many people do experience occasional episodes of apnea. What if you could recognize these episodes and know how to anticipate them so they dont happen as frequently. Wouldnt that be great? In order to determine whether or not you can be able to fool the doctor during a sleep apnea test, we need to understand what goes on during this process.

During a sleep apnea test, a doctor will place some pressure on your airway using either his or her finger or some other object. While this occurs, a computerised machine will simultaneously take readings and show you what the airway tissues are doing during this time. This information can then be compared with the data, the doctor has just taken from the actual apnea episode.

Although this sounds like a fairly simple question, the fact is that when dealing with such a delicate procedure as a sleep apnea test, it is important to get as accurate a result as possible. The problem is that the test can fail to pick up significant changes in the soft tissues of the airways if they are simply left undiagnosed. This means that you could unknowingly push air into your lungs during the test without meaning to. This is why it is important to get as accurate a result as possible when asking can you fake sleep apnea test and fool the doctor.

Answer These 8 Questions

Before asking about a sleep test, answer these questions:

  • Do you snore loudly ?
  • Do you often feel tired, fatigued or sleepy during the day?
  • Has anyone observed you stop breathing while you sleep?
  • Do you have high blood pressure?
  • Is your body mass index more than 35?
  • Are you over age 50?
  • Is your neck circumference more than 40 centimeters ?
  • Is your gender male?
  • Dr. Foldvary-Schaefer says, If you say yes to at least three of eight questions, you have a high probability of OSA.

Answers To The Tough Questions That You Are Probably Asking Right Now

    • I’m nervous about ordering an at home sleep study over the Internet. How do I know that your company is legitimate?

We know that using the Internet to address health issues creates some anxiety so we want to address this upfront. Singular Sleep has been in business since 2015, making us the first company ever to offer home sleep studies and online sleep doctor consultations together. All communications with our company, including emails and form submissions, are encrypted and meet the highest level of security. We are accredited by the Better Business Bureau, and have won several awards in our field. We are a full-service, online sleep apnea clinic owned by a doctor , not a company owned by business people that use inexpensive and poor-quality at home sleep studies as “loss leaders” to try to get you to buy CPAP from them. Our “competitors” like Lofta, ApneaMed, and iSleep are not accredited by the BBB and are not owned by doctors.

    • I have seen cheaper at home sleep studies available online. Why is your at home sleep study more expensive than some other companies?
    • Do you take me insurance?

If you have Medicare or are a veteran, you might face a long wait to get help due to the inefficiency of the system. Consider Singular Sleep if you value your health and quality of life more than the money involved.

    • What happens if I mess up the test or can’t figure out how to use it?
    • If I need CPAP, do I have to get it from Singular Sleep?

Thoughts On 7 Reasons Why I Dont Like Home Sleep Studies For Sleep Apnea

  • Dr. DebMay 23, 2015 at 8:50 pm

I had a home study. it was useless. so were my in lab studies, because the lab didnt know what they were looking for. Stanford found my apnea, and jaw surgery led to resolution of most of my problems, which were incapacitating. if my problem was so significant that I was incapacitated and it took jaw surgery to fix it, because CPAP and MAD and anything else I tried for OSA didnt help, shouldnt that have been detected on a typical in lab study or on a home study?

there is something seriously wrong with how we are trying to diagnose OSA. I think that may be the point of your recent blogs.

  • M. Shirley

This test was a waste of time for me. I have long-standing chronic insomnia. I was even sent ti be a patient at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville and saw a sleep disorder doctor. He ordered this test for me. It beeped all night long and I did not sleep one single minute the whole night. I returned the device to Mayo the next morning and I let them know that I had not slept at all the previous night so how could the results be reliable? When I saw the sleep disorder doctor he said I had a perfect test and did not have a sleep disorder. He totally disregarded the fact that I had not slept a minute that night. It was a total waste of time and I never got a diagnosis or had any further testing from the famous Mayo Clinic. So much for diagnostics.

    Medical referral

If you think you might have sleep apnea, first assess your risk with some questionnaires. Scoring high on screening questionnaires such as the STOP-Bang questionnaire and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale can be useful in persuading clinicians that a sleep study is necessary.

You can then see your doctor to request further investigation into your sleep breathing problems.

As well as your screening questionnaire results, SnoreLab can often be very helpful in giving your doctor some evidence of your loud snoring or maybe even some apnea episodes.

If seeing a general practitioner for your initial consultation, you may first be referred to a sleep specialist or an ear, nose and throat clinician before being offered a sleep study.

    Requesting a home study online

In some countries, there are online companies that conduct home sleep studies without you ever having to attend a medical consultation. After filling out an online assessment form and paying a fee, these companies will post your study equipment to you with instructions.

    Type Iii: Home Sleep Study

The type III HST includes some measurements to collect data like the typical nocturnal polysomnogram , but not all. It doesnt record data to identify disruptions to sleep or sleep stages, but rather it can measures things like:

    • Airflow
    • Blood oxygen saturation
    • Cardiac data

In some cases, this test may also include measurements for snoring, body position and/or light detection. Its the more common type of HSAT.

The creation of the HSAT was to help doctors come up with an OSA diagnosis in patients more likely to have it those with loud snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty breathing while sleeping or episodes of observed apnea. In these situations, the home test typically confirms the OSA diagnosis.

Some benefits of the HSAT include its lower costs potential , its convenience and theres no need for the supervision of a sleep technologist.

There is one disadvantage of the HSAT which is it offers fewer measurable physiologic variables than the PSG, which could lead to the results being misinterpreted.

    How Is It Treated

Sleep Apnea Diagnostics in Heart Failure – Dr. Bensimhon

You may be able to treat mild sleep apnea by making changes in how you live and the way you sleep. For example:

    • Lose weight if you are overweight.
    • Sleep on your side and not your back.
    • Avoid alcohol and medicines such as sedatives before bed.

If lifestyle changes don’t help sleep apnea, you may be able to use an oral breathing device or other types of devices. These devices help keep your airway open while you sleep.

Sleep apnea is often treated with a machine that helps you breathe while you sleep. This treatment is called continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP . Sometimes medicine that helps you stay awake during the day may be used along with CPAP. If your tonsils, adenoids, uvula, or other tissues are blocking your airway, your doctor may suggest surgery to open your airway.

Other Devices To Help You Breathe

Oral breathing devices reposition your tongue and jaw during sleep, which opens up your airways. They may be used for people who have mild to moderate sleep apnea. They may also be used for people with severe sleep apnea who try CPAP but find out that it does not work out for them. A dentist will shape the device to fit your mouth.

Your doctor may suggest that you use nasal dilators to help keep your airways open while you sleep. Nose strips widen the nostrils and improve airflow. Nasal disks have a valve that makes it harder for you to breathe out. This causes a little back-pressure in the airways that may help keep them open. You can get many of these devices without a prescription. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your options.

Understanding Your Home Sleep Test Results

Getting a home sleep apnea test is an easy process, and getting your results back is always exciting because it means youre one step closer to getting the treatment you need to start sleeping better. But we understand that this can also be a confusing time, which is why we want to help you better understand your sleep results and have our patient care representatives cover not only your treatment options but what your results mean for your sleep health.

Our home sleep test will measure several pieces of biometric data that will get examined and interpreted by a certified sleep physician. The results will give you a clear picture of your sleep quality as reflected by factors like blood oxygen saturation, breathing pattern and depth, heart rhythms, snoring, and sleeping positions. Patterns or interruptions in these data are vital to determining your sleep quality and assessing disruptions.

The testing device will also come with a built-in body positioning sensor that will aid our physicians in analyzing other important data like sleep positions through the night, pressure flow, snoring, breathing effort, SpO2, pleth, and pulse rate. All of this information is critical to diagnosing and treating common sleep disorders, like sleep apnea.

There Is A Great Misconception Out There That You Can Fake Central Sleep Apnea But If You Have Cardiopulmonary You Cant The Reason For This Is That When You Sleep The Muscles Of Your Diaphragm To Move With It And Try To Keep Your Airways Open By Creating A Vacuum However The Airway In Your Chest Is Not Going To Dilate Because It Is Attached To The Top Of Your Lungs Therefore You Can Fake Central Sleep Apnea But If You Have Cardiopulmonary You Cant

You might be asking yourself what the best way to try and cure sleep apnea is, after all you can fake it right? Well you can fake it because you can learn how to control your breathing through speech. Some people learn through hypnosis while others learn through audio tapes. You have to decide which method you want to use because there is no one method that will work for everybody.

The most important thing you can do to cure sleep apnea is to get regular exercise. This is the number one thing that will help you breathe properly. If you dont breathe properly then you can easily cause yourself to stop breathing for a few seconds and then start again. This is why exercising is such an important part of the treatment. Also it will help you relax during the day because stress will slow down your breathing as well.

    Home Sleep Study Definition

The HSAT also called portable monitoring or an out-of-center sleep test, is a diagnostic test sleep professionals and doctors use to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea. OSA is a condition characterized by upper airway obstruction that reduces inspiratory airflow during sleep or repeated episodes of apnea. Its evolved as a convenient alternative to the traditional overnight in-laboratory attended polysomnography in certain patients.

    The HSAT records:

    • Oxygen saturation
    • Heart rate

It allows sleep medicine specialists to identify times when you have shallow breathing that causes a decline in your oxygen levels or times when you stop breathing.

What To Expect During A Sleep Apnea Test

SLEEP TEST – Sleep Apnea Home Sleep Testing Device at Central Medical Clinic of Chicago

Patients who are suspected to have sleep apnea are typically instructed by a doctor to take a polysomnogram . This is a sleep apnea test that can be done in a supervised sleep clinic or in the patients home.

During the test, your bodys movements are monitored to be reviewed by a sleep specialist. The results are then used to determine whether or have sleep apnea or another sleep disorder like narcolepsy or even anxiety.

If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, you may be asked to complete additional testing as a way to determine the best course of treatment for your needs.

    1. Before your sleep study, you will be given a list of instructions from your sleep doctor. You will be instructed to shower and wash your hair before your arrival and will be told not to use spray and oils on your hair and scalp. Makeup typically isnt allowed either. Such products interfere with the adhesive used to attach sensors and monitors to your skin.

    2. Depending on the severity of your condition, your sleep study may be done using portable equipment in your home or in a private bedroom of a hospital or sleep clinic .

If your testing is done outside of your home, your room wont look like a typical hospital room. To increase comfort and decrease nervousness, the rooms a typically set up like cozy hotels.

    3. There will be a group of technicians watching you sleep throughout the night. You wont feel like a fish in an aquarium though. You wont see the technicians unless you buzz them for help.
