Why Am I Having Trouble Sleeping At Night

There are lots of causes of insomnia. It could be a change in schedule or travel-related jetlag that disrupts your circadian rhythm. Or, something as simple as eating a big meal too late at night. Many attribute difficulty sleeping to too-little or too-much exercise during the day. Using screens close to bedtime and having a sleep environment thats bright or overly warm have also been linked to restlessness.

If you find yourself lying awake at night with thoughts racing through your head, its a good sign that your insomnia is stress- or anxiety-related. Concerns about work, school, money, or relationships can trigger sleepless nights, as can traumatic events such as moving, a divorce, the death of a loved one, or even a novel coronavirus strain thats spreading around the world.

Read Fiction Before Bed

I dont think its a coincidence that the worst insomnia of my life coincided with a time where I was reading work emails on my mobile phone right before bed.

I know. Dumb, right?

We all know that jazz about how bright artificial lights stimulate the pineal gland and make your brain think its day-time when you should be sleeping. And yet we are still are own worst enemies.

But seriously, if you really want to cure your insomnia, you need to turn off your screens ~2 hours before you want to sleep.

  • Turn off the TV.
  • Turn off the smartphone.
  • Sit back and relax with an old-fashioned book.

Choose fiction. Non-fiction will just stimulate your brain. You want a good story to make you relax and get lost in a different world.

Here are a few fiction suggestions that have worked for me recently:

A few people have asked me my opinion on using a Kindle eReader before bed. After all, its a screen. Does it have the same sleep-disrupting effect as a smartphone, tablet, or computer?

When I cured my insomnia, I actually put down my smartphone and moved over to the Kindle. The light is not the same as the one you get from your phone and it shouldnt disrupt your sleep. I find it much easier to get into a good book when reading on the Kindle because you can turn the pages faster and its easier to hold than a book.

So, knock yourself out. Literally. Get a Kindle. I recommend the Paperwhite.

I Eliminated Caffeine And Alcohol

15 Strategies to Beat Insomnia Naturally

I have this one UNDER diet in order of importance for curing insomnia quickly and naturally because I actually eliminated caffeine and alcohol 100% two weeks BEFORE making any other diet changes and saw only very limited improvement in my sleep.

However, Im confident that should I have a big glass of wine before bed, I would NOT sleep as well or perhaps at all. Same with coffee.

I think it was eliminating these things in conjunction with the diet changes that make a big difference for me when it comes to sleep.

Giving up coffee was hard, and giving up wine was harder. I just adore both of them but I was totally committed to curing my insomnia naturally.

Now, in the evening when I want to sip on something I have a cup of this sleeping tea.

I found out this is why I had insomnia for years. My diet and lifestyle had made me chronically magnesium deficient.

Taking magnesium every night pretty much eliminated my chronic insomnia. Aside from a night here or there, I was and am getting more sleep than I have in years.

I was sleeping better, but I also noticed other improvements, too. I was able to handle stress better and I didnt have TMJ issues at night anymore. I felt like a new woman!

Treating Insomnia: Behavioral Therapy

If good sleep hygiene doesn’t solve your sleeping problems, behavioral therapy may. Here is a quick summary of some techniques:

Relaxation training. Learn deep breathing, progressive muscular relaxation, or meditation. Relaxing your mind at bedtime will help you drift off to sleep.

Stimulus control therapy. Go to bed only when you are sleepy. Don’t read, watch TV, snack, or listen to music in bed. Get up at the same time every day, no matter how little you’ve slept. Avoid daytime napping.

Sleep restriction therapy. Reduce your time in bed to the estimated total time you actually sleep in an average night by going to bed later, but don’t go below five hours. Make the change by getting into bed later, not getting up earlier. Get up at the same time every day. Maintain the same bedtime every night for a week, and then move it 15 minutes earlier every week until you get a satisfying, refreshing amount of sleep. Then maintain the same schedule every day.

Cognitive therapy. Learn to replace negative thoughts about sleep with positive thoughts .

Tips And Techniques To Cure Insomnia

How to Fix Insomnia Naturally | Evidence Based | Say Good Night to Insomnia Book Review

Insomnia is the medical term for the inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep not just for one night but from several days to months. Nearly 35 out of every 100 people suffer from insomnia.

A few steps can work fast to cure insomnia. However, this depends on what is causing your insomnia. Thus, it is prudent to consult your doctor for proper management of insomnia based on any underlying conditions you may have. Here are some ways that you can try at home and see if it works for you.

  • Wake up and go to bed at the same time. Once your body gets adjusted to a ritual of waking and sleeping at the same time daily, you will feel sleepy at the same time daily. You must follow it on holidays and weekends as well for the best results.
  • Be physically active. Staying physically active through regular exercises is one of the best ways to fall asleep and get regular sleep. Exercising shortly before going to bed, however, may make falling asleep difficult.
  • Dont have stimulants at night. Many people have the habit of taking caffeine-containing drinks, such as coffee, a few hours close to bedtime to keep them alert/awake for a few hours. As the effect of caffeine lasts for several hours, this habit can make it hard for you to fall asleep if you take it within 3-4 hours before going to sleep.
  • Do not take frequent naps. It is okay to take a single short nap in the afternoon. Taking frequent naps disrupts the normal sleeping pattern.

    Tips To Beat Insomnia

If you are suffering from insomnia, there are many steps you can take to change behaviors and lifestyle to help you get to sleep. Here are some tips for beating insomnia.

  • Wake up at the same time each day. It is tempting to sleep late on weekends, especially if you have had poor sleep during the week. However, if you suffer from insomnia you should get up at the same time every day in order to train your body to wake at a consistent time.
  • Eliminate alcohol and stimulants like nicotine and caffeine. The effects of caffeine can last for several hours, perhaps up to 24 hours, so the chances of it affecting sleep are significant. Caffeine may not only cause difficulty initiating sleep, but may also cause frequent awakenings. Alcohol may have a sedative effect for the first few hours following consumption, but it can then lead to frequent arousals and a non-restful night’s sleep. If you are on medications that act as stimulants, such as or asthma inhalers, ask your doctor when they should best be taken to help minimize any effect on sleep.
  • Limit naps. While napping seems like a proper way to catch up on missed sleep, it is not always so. It is important to establish and maintain a regular sleep pattern and train oneself to associate sleep with cues like darkness and a consistent bedtime. Napping can affect the quality of nighttime sleep.
