Nighttime Decisions When Getting Baby To Sleep

How can I get my newborn to sleep at night?

Develop a realistic attitude about nighttime parenting

Sleeping, like eating, is not a state you can force a baby into. The best you can do is to create a secure environment that allows sleep to overtake your baby. A realistic long- term goal is to help your baby develop a healthy attitude about sleep. Baby should feel that sleep is a pleasant state to enter and a secure state to remain in. Many sleep problems in older children and adults stem from children growing up with an unhealthy attitude about sleep. Such as sleep was not a pleasant state to enter and was a fearful state to remain in. Just as daytime parenting is a long-term investment, so is nighttime parenting. Teach your baby a restful attitude about sleep when they are young. By doing this, both you and your children will sleep better when they are older.

Beware of sleep trainers

  • Does this advice sound sensible, will it fit your babys temperament and does it feel right to you?

Sleep training may result in long-term loss

Using the rigid, insensitive let-him-cry-it-out method has several problems. First, it will undermine the trust your baby has for nighttime comfort. Second, it will prevent you from working at a style of nighttime parenting until you find the one that works best for you and your family, and third, it may keep you and your doctor from uncovering hidden medical causes of night waking. Night feedings are normal frequent, painful night waking is not.

Stay flexible when putting baby to sleep

Change Your Babys Diaper Strategically

Changing the diaper before a middle of the night feeding prevents the baby from waking up too much after a feeding is finished. When the baby wakes up change the diaper and re-swaddle to prepare him for sleep immediately following a night feeding. If you change the diaper after the night feeding, the baby may become too awake, making it more challenging for him to fall asleep.

Now, Ive also heard from parents of very young newborn babies sharing that the baby poops right after a night feeding. This is very common during the early newborn phase when babies are still working out the flow of their digestive tracts.

If your baby is consistently stooling after a night feeding, then certainly, just wait to change the diaper until after the feed. Once your babys gut matures and he or she stops stooling immediately after a night feed, you can go back to changing the diaper before the feed.

How To Get A Baby To Sleep Through The Night

As a new parent, you might wonder when your baby will sleep through the night and allow you to do the same. If you’re craving a full night of quiet, you aren’t alone: parents tend to experience sleep loss and fatigue in the months after their child is born.

To help new parents reduce the stress of these changes, well cover how sleeping through the night is defined, when babies generally begin to stay asleep, and how you can get your baby to sleep through the night when they’re ready.

Start Weaning The Night Feedings

Once you get the okay from your doctor to stop night feedings, you should slowly start to reduce them. In many cases, feeding becomes a sleep association because you fed your baby every time they woke up. Just because thats no longer necessary, doesnt mean your baby wont want it anymore. Slowly wean them off the night feedings , feeding them less and not as frequently over a few days or a week to get them used to not feeding every time they wake.

What’s An Example Of A Sleep Schedule At 2 Months

How To Get My Baby To Sleep At Night

A 2-month-old sleep schedule might look something like this:

6:30 a.m.
Sleep, wake only to eat
4 a.m. – 6:30 a.m.Sleep, wake up

Of course, this schedule is only an example. Different infants might sleep at different times of day or for different lengths of time depending on their parents’ schedules and activities. The same infant might also sleep at different times on different days.

Most parents have newborn babies that cannot sleep through the night. This is completely normal even if it is exhausting to you as a parent. By setting up daily and nightly routines and managing your expectations, both you and your newborn can eventually get a full night of sleep, However, since newborns usually feed every two to three hours, you should not expect to get a full night’s sleep for a few months.

Follow The Eat Wake Sleep Cycle

The baby wakes from sleep and immediately eats. Then the baby is awake for a while to play. Then the baby goes back to sleep.

This cycle has several purposes. First, it encourages full feedings by allowing the baby to eat immediately after waking. The baby will have the most energy immediately after waking, making him more inclined to take a full feeding and go longer between feedings.

Also, by feeding the baby after sleep rather than before sleep, the cycle prevents the baby from associating food with sleep or using food as a sleep prop. When using this cycle, a feeding before bedtime is typically only feeding before sleep.

Of course, there were times where I definitely fed my baby before sleep. He needed a little TLC for a certain nap, and I was totally fine offering it when he needed it. But for the most part, I tried to avoid feeding him right before sleep.

Note: Newborns require frequent feedings and rest to ensure healthy growth a development in the early months. Always feed your baby as frequently as your baby needs to ensure healthy weight gain.

Expect A 4th Trimester For Newborns

The first 3 or so months is all about adjusting to the world outside of the womb for infants. Just think of it, your little one was in a quiet, dark, warm spot for their entire existence! Now contrast that with the world outside of that cozy spot.

To adapt to the outside world babies need fully developed reflexes, senses and movement. Instead you have newborns that have a startle reflex, are immobile, cant stretch out their arms and legs fully and dont have a full eyesight. This all contributes to what they need to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Babies like to be bundled up. White noise or shushing is soothing. Being rocked or held close lulls them to sleep. These actions all mimic what they had while inside their mom. This is what the 4th trimester is all about, spending the first couple of months replicating the womb while babies adjust to their new world.

A Light Cotton Cloth Over The Eyes

I know many babies that fall asleep almost instantly if their face is covered by a very thin cotton cloth. I suppose it helps them shutting out distracting visual impressions.

Try this for naps rather than falling asleep at night, and dont leave the cloth with the baby out of your sight if you think there is even a remote risk that the baby could be suffocated by it, or that it could impact his oxygen uptake, and increase the risk of SIDS .

Teach Newborns The Difference Between Night And Day

The first step in getting your baby and yourself some good shut eye is to teach them the difference between night and day. Daytime is for being awake. Night-time is for sleep. If only we can simply tell our babies that!

So how do you teach them the difference between night and day? Heres how:

  • During the day keep light and noises at a normal day-time level
  • Be active during the day, meaning do normal day-time rituals
  • Keep rooms light during naps
  • At night darken the rooms
  • Lower activity level in the evening
  • Lessen noise volumes at night

Over time your babys internal clock will catch on to the activities surrounding them and catch on to the daily cycles

Expect Not Knowing The Time Of Day

How Can I get my Baby to Sleep?

When babies are in the womb for 9 month everything is dark. When they enter the world they stick to their instincts and cant tell the difference between night and day.

Thats why babies eat, sleep, and poop all day. It doesnt matter if its 1 am or 1 pm, they just go off of their natural urges and get what they need in the moment regardless if youre awake or not. A newborns vision isnt fully developed and they dont pick up on other cues like a sunny sky or star filled night.

What If My Baby Won’t Sleep In A Crib

Sometimes babies just dont want to transition from Mom or Dads cozy arms into their own crib, no matter how cute it looks.

If thats the case, blur the lines between you and the baby bed. Try calming him down in your arms until he’s drowsy, then gently place him directly onto the bed without losing skin-to-skin contact.

A little massage or patting should help him nod off too. Make sure the temperature in your baby’s room is comfortably warm. Dim the lights and put on a white noise machine or fan to drown out ambient sounds.

Swaddling baby or putting him into a sleep sack before placing him in the crib may make him feel extra secure and, hopefully, encourage him to fall asleep in his bed.

You Discuss The Need To Learn Your Babys Sleep Cues Why Is That Important

Your baby will give you signs when she is tired. Reading these sleepy signals correctly is critically important, and will affect the results of every other sleep solution you use. If you miss the window of tiredness, your baby will quickly become overtired. An overtired baby is cranky, cries more, and ironically, wont fall asleep easily or for very long. On the flip side, a baby who is not yet tired will reject any efforts to sleep, and will fuss over your insistence! Dancing between just tired enough and too tired is a fine line, but if you know what to look for, you can find the perfect moment with your baby.

Some Babies Sleep Better In Car Seats And Swings But Are They Safe

Recent product recalls, and a new study, reaffirm the old advice: Infants should sleep flat on their backs in a crib.

  • Read in app

This story was originally published on May 24, 2019 in NYT Parenting.

A new studyMay 20 in the journal Pediatrics highlights the risks of allowing babies to sleep for extended periods in rocking devices or car seats. If the thought of giving up your infant swing or vibrating chair is daunting, I get it. My first child is now 11. Although day-to-day memories of his first few months are fading, one that remains fresh is his screaming. As an infant, he was often difficult to soothe. My wife or I would put him in his car seat: Cue the screams. Rocking chair? Screams. Crib? Tummy time? Stroller? Guess. The one thing that worked was his infant swing. We would strap him in, turn on the motor that swung the cushioned seat back and forth, and count on about 30 minutes of blissful silence while he snoozed.

Safe sleep advocates, and pediatricians like me, have long been concerned about the array of rocking or bouncing devices on the market that promise to calm crying infants. But if you had told me, as the new father of a fussy 3-month-old, that I needed to give up the swing, Im not sure what I would have done.

It is a heartbreaking situation. One of the earliest reports to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, from January 2018, reads as follows:

When Do Babies Sleep Through The Night

How can I help my baby sleep better at night?

Sleeping through the night doesn’t have a strict definition. However, people often say a baby sleeps through the night when the baby sleeps for six to eight hours at night , without waking up, in addition to daytime naps. By six months of age, roughly 62% of babies sleep for six or more uninterrupted hours at night. By one year of age, that percentage climbs, with around 72% of one-year-old babies sleeping for six or more uninterrupted hours at night.

Its important not to push your baby to sleep through the night too early. Prior to three months of age, virtually all babies sleep in three- to four-hour blocks of time , without regard to whether it’s daytime or nighttime. Around three months, some babies begin to do more of their sleeping at night, but this sleep is still interrupted.

Also, keep in mind that your night of sleep and your baby’s night are different. If you put your baby down to sleep and they sleep through the night uninterrupted, they will still likely wake up while you are sleeping. For example, with an 8 p.m. bedtime, six hours of uninterrupted sleep leads to a 2 a.m. wake time.

Trust Your Instincts And Get Help When You Feel Stressed

If something feels wrong with you or the baby, talk to your physician. And remember that your own mental health is crucial.

Coping with sleep deprivation is very stressful, especially if your infant seems to be especially fussy or prone to crying. Watch for signs of postpartum stress and postpartum depression, and reach out to others for support.

Teach Your Baby To Self

When your baby wakes in the middle of the night and cries for you, its always okay to go check on them. However, try and limit your time in there with them. Make it clear that its still time to sleep, not play or eat. Place your hand on their chest for a few moments to calm them, then leave the room . The Zen Swaddle and Zen Sack are gently weighted on the chest and sides, which make your baby feel like youre still there. This can help ease separation anxiety, break the sleep association to be held to fall back asleep, and help your baby learn to self-soothe.

Practice Good Sleep Hygiene

Night sleep develops first, so typically the first portion of the night is the longest stretch of sleep, says certified pediatric sleep consultant Tracie Kesatie, MA, of Rest Well Baby.

Kesatie recommends implementing a relaxing routine, such as taking a warm bath or reading a few pages of a book before bed, plus turning off electronics at least 1 to 2 hours before bedtime.

How To Get Your Baby Sleeping Through The Night

“Hunting for a fresh crib sheet after your baby soaks his diaper or spits up is miserable in the middle of the night, and turning on the lights can wake him up more fully, meaning getting him back to sleep can take an eternity. Instead, double layer ahead of time: Use a regular crib sheet, then a disposable waterproof pad, then another sheet on top. That way, you can just peel away the top layer and pad, throw the sheet in the hamper, and toss the waterproof pad. Also be sure to keep a one-piece, a swaddle, or a sleep sack nearbywhatever it is your baby needs to continue the night comfortablyso you’re not hunting through drawers every time your baby’s diaper leaks.” Aimi Palmer, a sleep consultant and cofounder of AB Child Solutions, in London
