Treatment If The Condition Gets Worse
Over time, treatment of RLS with a dopamine medicine may not work as well as it did at first. This is called augmentation.
You might notice that your symptoms:
- Begin earlier in the day.
- Become more intense.
- Spread to another part of your body.
If you are taking a dopamine medicine for RLS and your symptoms change, tell your doctor. Do not stop taking your medicine without talking to your doctor first. You can work with your doctor to decide what treatment is the best one for you.
If you continue to have symptoms even though you are receiving treatment with drugs and are exercising regularly, eating right, and not smoking, drinking alcohol, or using caffeine, your symptoms may need to be reevaluated. Many other conditions can cause the sensations found in restless legs syndrome, including several vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
Your doctor may recommend different drugs or a combination of drugs. Follow up with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve.

What Are The Causes Of Rls
A 2006 study published in the journal of Medscape General Medicine examines RLS in children. Primary RLS is believed to be inherited, with evidence pointing to an autosomal dominant disorder. Boston Children’s Hospital notes that close relatives of individuals with RLS have an estimated 6-7 fold increased risk having RLS themselves.
Secondary RLS, meaning RLS not caused by the typical genetic disorder, is most commonly caused by iron deficiency. However, it was unclear whether the iron deficiency was a result of a genetic predisposition or inadequate dietary intake.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
A noninvasive procedure thats typically used to treat depression could be helpful in relieving RLS symptoms. So far, studies have been limited and more research is needed, but the results are promising (4, 41,
Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation sends magnetic impulses to certain areas of the brain.
Its not entirely clear why rTMS could help relieve RLS symptoms. One theory is that the impulses increase the release of dopamine in the brain. Another suggests that rTMS could help calm the hyperarousal in parts of the brain that are associated with RLS .
In one 2015 study, 14 people with RLS were given 14 sessions of rTMS over 18 days. The sessions significantly improved their RLS symptoms and improved their sleep. The results lasted for at least two months after the treatment ended .

Perform A Localized Massage
Massaging the legs before sleeping can help reduce some of the discomfort and uncontrollable urges that tend to creep up at rest. Its a safe and quick way to release dopamine and ease symptoms of restless leg syndrome. Not to mention, you have the convenience of being able to massage yourself whenever you feel the need.
How does massaging reduce RLS symptoms?
The biggest benefits of massaging for restless leg syndrome are two-fold. First, it stimulates the area affected by RLS, therefore allowing patients to find some relief from decreased urges to restart the involuntary movements.
The second benefit involves the generation of dopamine. As weve previously discussed, low dopamine levels are commonly associated with a worsening of restless leg syndrome symptoms. This study demonstrated a 31% increase in dopamine levels for patients that underwent massage therapy.
How to effectively massage the areas affected by RLS?
Unlike a full body massage, you can massage your legs yourself and find relief thats just as good. The areas to focus on are the calves and hamstrings. Patients have reported that adding some heat to the massage provides additional relief.

The symptoms of restless legs syndrome can make it hard to get to sleep. When youre sleep deprived, you not only feel terrible, but youre more vulnerable to stress. Stress and fatigue can worsen RLS, making it a vicious cycle, so doing what it takes to get enough sleep is crucial.
Try sleeping with a pillow between your legs. It may prevent nerves in your legs from compressing and result in fewer nighttime RLS symptoms.
Stick to a regular sleep schedule. Support your bodys natural sleep rhythms by going to bed and getting up at the same time every day .
Optimize your bedroom for sleep. Make sure the room is dark , quiet, and cool.
Wind down with a relaxing bedtime routine. Try curling up in bed with a book, listening to calming music, or taking a hot bath .

Logging changes in your diet, lifestyle, sleep habits, and routine might help you make helpful connections between your daily activities and the quality of your sleep at night..
B Vitamins And Folic Acid
In some studies with people with RLS, a low dose of vitamin B is noticed, which is necessary for healthy brain and nerve functions. Using vitamin B supplements along with the Folic Acid is normalizing the vitamin B dose, and it seems to be very helpful in the battle with RLS symptoms. It is necessary to mention that there are many types of vitamin B, and many of them are essential in RLS treatment. The best solution is choosing the vitamin B complex instead of just one of them.

Restless legs syndrome affects about 5 to 10 per cent of people. Its more common among women and older people, but it can occur at any age.
People with RLS who are otherwise healthy are said to have primary RLS. These people often have a family history of the condition. People with RLS and an underlying condition that may be causing or contributing to their symptoms are said to have secondary RLS.
Conditions that are associated with RLS include:
- pregnancy and

Not everyone who has Restless Leg Syndrome is a candidate for Common Fibular Nerve Decompression but a plurality of patients are. Deciphering who will benefit best from this procedure is the trick and having a surgeon who knows how to effectively perform the surgery is critical.
The procedure is a relatively easy surgery to recover from. Our clinic recommends our patients lay down for three days with the foot elevated above the head. After these initial three days, the patient can do most daily activities within reasonable limits. The surgical area is still recommended to be wrapped to prevent swelling, and icing and elevation after activity would still be a good idea for 1-2 weeks. Symptoms Of Restless Legs Syndrome
Patients with restless legs syndrome, feeling discomfort or tingling in the legs, they urgently need to move to end the itchy rash that interferes with rest. The kind of sensations that a person with restless legs can experience are wide ranging from itching, very slight pain, vibrating tactile sensations, small bites that move, etc.
It rarely occurs in the arms, chest, or even the face. In addition, the sensations are generally indiscriminately bilateral, that is, they can occur on either side of the body without any criteria. Some patients describe a certain alternation, as if when the sensations disappear from one side, they move to the other side of the body.
These sensations cause a lot of discomfort, and the longer you wait for the individual to go, the more irritated you become.. This is why these people, when they are at rest, sitting or lying down, keep their legs moving. This way the discomfort disappears during the time they are in motion. However, the symptoms reappear when one wants to rest completely, entering a circle that is difficult to break.
Ruling Out Potential Causes
Your first step in addressing RLS should be to figure out if something is causing it. While RLS can be related to things that are largely out of your control, such as genetics or pregnancy, other possible factors can be addressed.
These factors could be daily habits, medications youre taking, health conditions you have, or other triggers.

Restless Legs Syndrome And Nutrition
Many cases of RLS are associated with iron deficiency, which can be treated with iron supplements. These have few side effects apart from stomach complaints and constipation, and they work to reduce symptoms of RLS in many people with low iron and ferritin levels or iron-deficiency anemia. After checking your iron and ferritin levels, your doctor may prescribe iron supplements alone or in conjunction with other medications.
Other vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, zinc, and vitamin D may also play a role in RLS. Pregnant women in particular may benefit from folate supplements, while people with kidney problems may benefit from vitamin C and E supplements.

Take A Warm Bath With Epsom Salts
Preparing a warm bath with Epsom salts and soaking your feet there for a few minutes is another way to help treat RLS. The magnesium from the Epsom salts will solubilize in the water, and as you spend more time soaked in the bath, the magnesium will start entering your legs and helping your muscles relax. The concept is similar to consuming magnesium supplements to help ameliorate symptoms.
That being said, some people find that warm temperature makes their symptoms worse. If you find this is the case for you, try using a water temperature that makes you more comfortable and using that for your Epsom salt bath.
Additionally, Epsom salts further help get quality sleep by decreasing stress levels and helping you feel more relaxed. It also has the benefits of reducing inflammation, improving nerve function, preventing artery hardening, and relieving muscle cramps and headaches.
Restless Leg Syndrome In Children
Children can experience the same tingling and pulling sensations in their legs as adults with RLS. But they may have a hard time describing it. They might call it a creepy crawly feeling.
Children with RLS also have an overwhelming urge to move their legs. Theyre more likely than adults to have symptoms during the day.
RLS can interfere with sleep, which can affect every aspect of life. A child with RLS may seem inattentive, irritable, or fidgety. They may be labeled disruptive or hyperactive. Diagnosing and treating RLS can help address these problems and improve school performance.
To diagnose RLS in children up to age 12, the adult criteria must be met:
- overwhelming urge to move, usually accompanied by strange sensations
- symptoms worsen at night
- symptoms are triggered when you try to relax or sleep
- symptoms ease up when you move
Additionally, the child must be able to describe the leg sensations in their own words.
Otherwise, two of these must be true:
- Theres a clinical sleep disturbance for age.
- A biological parent or sibling had RLS.
- A sleep study confirms a periodic limb movement index of five or more per hour of sleep.
Any dietary deficiencies must be addressed. Children with RLS should avoid caffeine and develop good bedtime habits.
If necessary, medications that affect dopamine, benzodiazepines, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed.
