Sore Throat Remedies For Infants And Children

What Causes a Sore Throat

Sore throats in infants and young children definitely arent fun, but the good news is that theyre rarely the sign of a medical emergency on their own. Still, treating sore throats may be different for infants and children. Here are a few tips and remedies:

  • Add cool mist or a humidifier to your childs room. Moisture in the air can help relieve pain from a sore throat.
  • Keep children hydrated by encouraging them to drink as much as possible. Avoid juices or popsicles with lots of citrus.
  • Children under 5 years should not be given hard candy cough drops or anything else that might pose a choking risk. Use caution when giving cough drops to children under 10 years.
  • Dont give honey to children who are younger than 1 year.

Dont Drink Cold Water And Sweet Drinks Often

We are not trying to stop you from drinking cold water. You can drink them occasionally, but never drink cold and sweet drinks a few hours before a performance. Drinking cold water and other beverages can restrict your vocal bands, hindering the vibrations required to produce a good-quality sound. Coffee should also be avoided if you have a concert or performance during the day. If you are a coffee lover, skip it for a while because caffeine can dry your vocal cords.

What Is Snoring Vs Sleep Apnea

Snoring can be a symptom of sleep apnea but not everyone who snores has a sleep disorder. Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that causes you to temporarily stop breathing when you are asleep. If you are regularly tired during the day even though you have had sufficient sleep or if your snoring is paired with choking or gasping sound, you may have sleep apnea. Your medical provider or a sleep doctor can diagnose sleep apnea using a sleep study or home sleep apnea test. Sleep apnea is manageable using several approaches including CPAP, oral appliance therapy, and surgery.

Apply A Warm Compress

One of the things that Ive always found helpful but have never seen as a home remedy to soothe a sore throat is applying a warm compress. A washcloth dipped in warm water and wrung out, then laid over the throat really does make a difference. Something about the warming sensation on the outside of the throat seems to confuse the sore, tickling, dry feeling inside the throat.

This home remedy is especially helpful when your sore throat is giving you a dry, unproductive cough. Its also very helpful at night when youre trying to fall asleep but your itchy throat just wont let you rest. Sometimes, I even drape the washcloth over my mouth and nose, to keep my sinuses from drying out in my sleep. The next time you get a cold, give this home remedy a shot. You might be surprised at how much it helps!

Palatal Procedures

Palatal ImplantsA pillar procedure involves surgically placing rigid fiber implants or suspension sutures into the roof of the mouth . This is performed under local anesthesia in the office. The implants, in conjunction with the bodys scarring response, help stiffen the palate and lessen vibration and flutter that causes snoring. Barbed suspension sutures may also be used to shorten or lift the palate. Potential benefits of this method include mild discomfort and fast recovery. Complications are rare but include implant or suture extrusion, or infection, that may require removal and replacement. PillarĀ® implants have a relatively high cost, and additional palatal modification procedures may be needed, such as shortening the uvula or a long palate.

Injection SnoreplastyIn this method, also done under local anesthesia in the office, a chemical is injected into the soft palate. The subsequent inflammation and scar tissue stiffen the palate, decreasing vibration and snoring. The most commonly used agent is sodium tetradecyl sulfate, which has also been used to treat varicose veins. Injection snoreplasty has a lower cost than other methods, but is associated with more pain and recovery time. Some patients may also require additional injection treatments to achieve optimal results.

When Do We Need To Visit The Doctor For A Sore Throat

While most sore throats are the result of viruses like the common cold, do not cause severe pain, and often resolve on their own within a few days, its important to exercise caution. A kids sore throat that is severe, accompanied by a fever of 101F or higher, and doesnt improve within 24 hours or so needs to be evaluated by a doctor. You should also seek medical attention if your little one is struggling to sleep and/or develops a rash. All of these are symptoms of strep throat , which can lead to other health concerns if not treated properly.

Tonsillectomy Or Swelling After Surgery

Sinus surgery, tonsillectomy surgery, and intubation or laparoscopic surgeries around the nose and throat may all cause a swollen or inflamed uvula.

Dr. David J. Kiener, MD on Realself, says that it is not unusual for a patient to have a sore uvula after surgery, from anesthesia.

The swollen uvula after surgery is usually a result of irritation by the endotracheal tube used to maintain the airway. Bacterial infections may worsen the symptoms. Otherwise, the swelling should resolve on its own within 10 days. Other operations that may cause an inflamed uvula include wisdom teeth removal that involves anesthesia injection.

    What About Allergies

Do you have allergies? If so, treating indoor and/or outdoor allergies can also help reduce a sore throat.

Other allergy tips include the following:

    • Change air filters regularly.
    • Keep pets out of your bedroom.
    • Remove carpets and drapes, if possible.
    • Line mattress and pillows if you are allergic to dust mites.
    • Shower in the morning .

Its hard to fathom, but dust mites and debris can add five to 10 pounds to a mattress over a few years.

For some people, this advice might be even harder to fathom: Disobey your mothers rules and dont make the bed, Dr. Benninger says. Dust mites like dark, warm environments so keep your sheets pulled until right before you sleep.

    Why Do People Snore

For breathing at rest, it is ideal to breathe through the nose. The nose acts as a humidifier, heater, and filter for the incoming air. When we breathe through our mouth, these modifications to the air entering our lungs occur to a lesser extent. Our lungs are still able to use the colder, drier, dirtier air but you may have noticed that breathing really cold, dry, or dirty air can be uncomfortable. Therefore, our bodies naturally want to breathe through the nose if possible.

The nose is made up of two parallel passages, one on each side, called the nasal cavities. They are separated by a thin wall , which is a relatively flat wall of cartilage, bone, and lining tissue . On the lateral side of each passage, there are three nasal turbinates, which are long, cylindrical-shaped structures that lie roughly parallel to the floor of the nose. The turbinates contain many small blood vessels that function to regulate airflow. If the blood vessels in the turbinates increase in size, the turbinate as a whole swell, and the flow of air decreases. If the vessels narrow, the turbinates become smaller, and airflow increases.

    Mouth breathing and snoring

As discussed above, we naturally want to breathe through our noses. Some people cannot breathe through their noses because of the obstruction of the nasal passages. This can be caused by a deviation of the nasal septum, allergies, sinus infections, swelling of the turbinates, or large adenoids .

How To Know If You Should Talk To Your Doctor About A Sore Throat

If we went to the doctor every time we felt a scratchy sore throat, we would probably be at the doctors office far too often for anyones own good. A lot of the time, minor sore throats do not necessitate a trip to the local clinic.

But with that being said, there are times when you should probably take a sore throat more seriously namely, when it is just one of two or more symptoms that could indicate a larger underlying problem.

    • Do you also have a fever?
    • Do you have pus in the back of your throat?
    • Do you have a red rash?
    • Are you having a lot of trouble swallowing?
    • Are you having trouble breathing?
    • Do your lymph glands feel swollen?

But what can you do about your sore throat if you do believe it to be snoring related?

    Cayenne Pepper Or Hot Sauce

Often used as a pain reliever, cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, a natural compound known for blocking pain receptors.

Although not scientifically proven, ingesting cayenne mixed with warm water and honey can help with pain relief for sore throats. Remember that an initial burning sensation is common. Cayenne should not be taken if you have open sores in your mouth. Start with just a few drops of hot sauce or a light sprinkle of cayenne, as both can be very hot.

How To Make Your Sore Throat Feel Better

Making your sore throat feel better will depend a lot on what types of remedies you like to use, but any of the following could be useful.

    • You can gargle with salt water
    • You can suck on a cough drop or lozenge
    • You can drink some warm tea with a bit of honey in it
    • You can try an over-the-counter pain relief product
    • You can drink more water
    • You can use a humidifier while you sleep
    • You can give your throat a steam treatment by breathing-in the steam of some boiling water with a towel over your head
    • You can try a throat spray from the local pharmacy
    • You can suck on garlic

Obviously, some of these are going to work better for a snoring-related sore throat than others, but the main idea is to find something that will soothe the pain and irritation away so that you can get past the discomfort and back to feeling normal again as soon as possible.

    The Lingering Sore Throat

Persisting or recurrent sore throat can indicate a number of conditions, most of which are very curable. Acute pharyngitis is a sore throat that appears and can last up to a month before fully resolved. It is usually the result of infection viral, bacterial, or rarely fungal . Acute pharyngitis might be tested to make sure it is not Streptococcal, which needs antibiotic treatment to prevent possible rheumatic fever. Viral pharyngitis is usually allowed to run its course, treating only with comfort medications. The rare sore throat or mouth caused by a yeast infection needs further testing to make sure it is not a sign of something more serious.

Chronic pharyngitis is often more difficult to treat. When a sore throat last more than a few weeks it should be investigated by an Ear Nose & Throat doctor. The most common cause is a persistent infection of the tonsils . Usually a prolonged antibiotic course is prescribed to try and really kill the infection. When this doesnt work, and when the sore throats are interfering with the patients life enough, surgery may be considered to remove the tonsils and greatly improve the problem.

Sore throat in the morning only may result from overnight acid reflux, or even snoring / sleep apnea. In fact we will often see frank uvulitis and throat pain after a night of bad snoring!

    Medical Cures For Snoring

Your physician may recommend a medical device or surgical procedure such as:

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure . To keep your airway open during sleep, a machine at your bedside blows pressurized air into a mask that you wear over your nose or face.

Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty uses a laser to shorten the uvula and to make small cuts in the soft palate either side. As the cuts heal, the surrounding tissues stiffen to prevent the vibrations that trigger snoring.

Palatal implants or the Pillar procedure, involves inserting small plastic implants into the soft palate which help prevent collapse of the soft palate that can cause snoring.

Somnoplasty uses low levels of radiofrequency heat to remove tissues of the uvula and soft palate that vibrate during snoring. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes.

Custom-fitted dental devices and lower jaw-positioners help open your airway by bringing your lower jaw or your tongue forward during sleep. For best results, you will need to see a dentist who specializes in these devices.

Surgical procedures such as Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty , Thermal Ablation Palatoplasty , tonsillectomy, and adenoidectomy, increase the size of your airway by surgically removing tissues or correcting abnormalities.

Why Does My Throat Hurt At Night

Sore Throat or Strep? When to Go to the Doctor

When people think of a sore throat, they usually think of illness. The truth is that this can be a symptom for a wide range of different problems, ranging from a common cold, to allergies, to a serious upper respiratory infection, to strep throat, etc.

Basically anything that causes excess mucus drainage can lead to a sore throat overnight, because when you sleep, the extra mucus can run down the back of your throat, causing soreness. This is why a lot of sore throats hit their peak at night, and then tend to subside during the day.

But sore throats are not just symptoms. They can also serve as a warning sign, to let you know that there might be a different issue at work. In a sense, you can sometimes think of a sore throat as a clue that can help you figure out the real problem and when it comes to snoring-related sore throats, this is exactly the case.

But as a general rule, if your sore throat tends to occur only in the evening, and if it is a recurring problem, then you should probably take a look at your environmentbecause if you dont really have any other symptoms, there is a good chance that this is just a clue warning you that something around you is just not quite right.

You can even strain your throat muscles from talking or yelling too much in one day! There are actually a lot of things that can cause this issue, so it is important to do some productive problem solving/detective work to try to figure out what the culprit could be.

If you suspect you are experiencing sleep apnea, talk to your Orlando ENT about your concerns. There are several different sleep apnea treatments:

    • Sleep study to see how your sleep is being interrupted
    • CPAP machine which applies mild air pressure to make sure the airways remain open
    • Somnoplasty
    • Medications to help you stay more alert throughout the day will encourage better sleep at night
    • Weight loss as obesity can interfere with nighttime breathing

Why Am I Snoring In The First Place

This is not always the easiest question to answer.

Snoring usually happens because of a phenomenon called soft palate vibration. This happens when loose, soft tissue in the throat restricts the airway during sleep. When this happens, the motion of the air coming in and out of lungs causes this soft tissue to vibrate, which produces the sounds that we have all come to associate with snoring.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea happens the same way, except that it is actually just a worse version of the same problem. If the loose tissue in the airway takes up too much room, it might block off the airway completely which means that the individual might even stop breathing for a short period of time.

If they do, their brain will wake them up when it realizes that there is no oxygen coming in, which will cause them to gasp or choke for air. But the problem is that this doesnt usually fully wake the person to the point where they realize that they have been woken upthough it does impact their sleep cycle.

And that is the big issue, because it destroys their quality of sleep.

But snoring and OSA can also be caused by a number of different things. Being overweight, smoking, drinking alcohol, taking some types of medication, being dehydrated, and suffering from allergies are all possible contributors to the problem.

The problem also tends to get worse for people as they get older.
