Should You Be Worried About Snoring During Pregnancy

Snoring During Pregnancy

There is some research out there to suggest that pregnant snorers are at greater risk of complications compared to pregnant women who dont snore. But dont panic. These are links, not direct causes and can often be associated with issues other than normal pregnancy-onset snoring.

Two studies by a team of US scientists in 2012 and 2013 found that snoring expectant mothers were at greater risk of:

  • Pre-eclampsia a condition characterized by high blood pressure and proteins in the urine.
  • Having labor complications that necessitated a Caesarean section.
  • Babies having a low birth weight.

The important thing to note here is that these studies talk about chronic snorers. This refers to women who snored a lot before they were pregnant. If you are new to the snoring game since becoming pregnant, you neednt worry.

Pregnant women who snore shouldnt be overly concerned about these findings. Every woman is different, and whilst these studies attempted to adjust their methods in order to look at snoring alone, other health factors are bound to have an effect.

Indeed, being obese before pregnancy, having chronic conditions of the upper airway and smoking heighten womens risk of snoring when pregnant. If these factors are applicable to you and your snoring has got much worse since becoming pregnant, it might be advisable to seek some guidance.

Should You Worry About Snoring During Pregnancy

Theres something I see in my dental practice often. Its when a mother brings their child in for a dental check-up, they usually have something in common mothers with small jaws have kids with small jaws too.

Your last trip on an airplane reveals an interesting lesson about pregnancy, breathing and your kids health.

Were all familiar with the spiel during the safety demo before take-off. When the mask drops, you put the oxygen mask on yourself before your child. The reason for this is simple. You need to breathe properly before you can help others. If you have oxygen deprivation, your kids health and survival will be at risk regardless if they have a mask or not.

Your child is dependent on your own health.

As a dentist, I often think of the airplane example because the mouth reveals signs of how a mother breathes. And for pregnant women, the problems with oxygen deprivation get worse.

Your risk of suffering from sleep apnea, snoring or teeth grinding increase during pregnancy. And, like on an airplane, a lack of oxygen will affect your unborn child. During sleep, snoring and sleep apnea symptoms further worsen this lack of oxygen. Your breathing health during pregnancy is crucial to your newborns development.

Every mother wants the best for their kids health. But your breathing also impacts your kids dental health. If youre pregnant you need to ensure that youre getting enough oxygen when you breathe and sleep.

Causes Of Snoring During Pregnancy

There are two main reasons why a pregnant woman might snore while she is with child. These are weight gain and hormonal changes that come with gestation.

You gain weight during the first trimester of your pregnancy. The gain might not be noticeable at first, but your body is rapidly adjusting to becoming the home of your child for the next several months.

Not all women will snore loudly in their last trimester. A few might get away with soft snoring while they sleep in a comfortable position.

You need to understand that in your last trimester, you may have some issues sleeping. This is because it is difficult to look for the right position to accommodate your burgeoning abdomen.

Your hormones play havoc in your body. Aside from putting on the pounds, your hormones will encourage the production of more blood in your body. The additional liter or so that your body produces is a safeguard from blood loss while giving birth, Aside from this, the additional blood is also connected to your growing fetus.

The side effect of the increase in blood volume leads to swelling in your blood vessels. Noticeably, the swelling is around your nose area, neck, and in some other parts of the body.

Snoring is the result of an obstruction in the airways as we inhale and exhale. Since our nasal region swells up and becomes obstructed, you snore.

Many women also experience congestion during pregnancy. This is due to the swelling or may be caused by an allergic reaction.

Sleep On Your Side Left Is Best For Digestion

A great preventative way to not snore is to sleep on your side and the left side is best. The tongue and throat muscles relax when you sleep on your back this causes a blocked airway and snoring. By sleeping on your side, the muscles still relax, however, they do not cover the airway since you are on your side. Studies show sleeping on your left side not only prevents snoring but is beneficial for your health overall. It improves digestion and filters toxins and wastes more quickly. This may be one of the simplest solutions to prevent pregnancy snoring.

Hormonal Changes Associated With Altered Respiratory Function During Pregnancy

How To Avoid Snoring During Pregnancy?

Circulating oestrogen and progesterone levels increase markedly during pregnancy, both primarily being responsible for maintaining the pregnancy. However, there are many other physiological changes produced by these hormones which are unrelated to maintenance of the pregnancy. Progesterone markedly upregulates ventilatory drive at the level of the central chemoreceptors . As a result, there is a reduced arterial carbon dioxide pressure and an associated respiratory alkalosis with a mean arterial pH of 7.44 . This resting respiratory alkalosis can lead to instability in the respiratory control pathways which may become unbalanced during sleep. While it is well known that hypocapnia and respiratory alkalosis can lead to central apnoeas during non-rapid eye movement sleep in non-pregnant subjects, particularly during the transitional period from wakefulness to sleep, this has not been investigated during pregnancy.

In keeping with the upregulation of central respiratory drive, there is increased diaphragmatic effort leading to greater negative inspiratory pressures at the level of the upper airway. This may be related to an increased tendency for the upper airway to collapse during sleep.

Not Only Does Your Baby Bump Grow

How To Stop Snoring

Ultimately, the reason for snoring during pregnancy is the weight gain. Not only does your baby bump expand, but so to does the neck. What really happens is that fatty deposits in the pharynx increase, causing the airways become narrower as a result. As a result the air you breathe can no longer pass through unhindered and it causes the flabby tissues in your throat to vibrate. This results in snoring. The best anti snoring advice is to stop lying on your back. There is a wide range of positional therapy products that can prevent you from sleeping in a supine position. They do not only maintain your airways, but also ensure a better blood flow to the unborn baby.

Snoring During Pregnancy Is It Common

Studies have shown that during pregnancy your risk of snoring increases. The biggest increase occurs during the third trimester. The change in weight and pressure on your organs decrease space for breathing and result in snoring. As the extra weight encroaches on your throat, voice box and chest and narrows her airways.

A narrow airway means lack of oxygen. This is associated with pre-eclampsia which is unusually high blood pressure during pregnancy. A condition that can cause problems for both a mother and their unborn child.

While snoring during pregnancy is quite common, it should not be overlooked or ignored. Although its common, it should be considered as dangerous.

Does Snoring Impact Pregnancy

Snoring in pregnancy

Snoring may not be a cause of concern. But if it is, it is important to know how to identify it and seek medical intervention.

One study of 189 pregnant women, conducted at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, states that snoring could indicate a risk for the mother and the baby in the following cases .

  • Habitual snoring is associated with poor outcomes for both the mom and the baby, including the risk of cesarean section and low birth weight babies.
  • Another complication might be intrauterine growth restriction that may cause smaller babies with developmental delays .If snoring is due to an underlying medical condition, then treating the condition could stop the snoring as well. If it is due to the bodily changes during pregnancy, you may try the remedies we talk about next.

Can You Get Sleep Apnea During Pregnancy

Some pregnant women are awakened by their own snoring. Even symptoms of sleep apnea or sleep disorders may occur.

Sleep apnea is a respiratory disorder that is closely related to snoring.

It is common that at some point the airways completely close in sleep apnea. The condition prevents the supply of oxygen to the lungs, which wake you up.

In this case, it is important to seek medical help.

Sleep apnea can cause exhaustion and lower oxygen supply to the fetus delivery over a prolonged period of time.

Snoring Sleep Apnea Symptoms And Your Kids Dental Health

In my dental practice, when I see parents with small jaws, their kids have small jaws too.

Children born to women with sleep apnea are more likely to suffer from low birth weight. Smaller jaws mean crooked teeth, smaller airways, and future sleep disorders.

Maternal snoring can cause growth retardation, and this can affect the growth of the jaw. A small jaw means a smaller airway. Small jaws predispose your kid to sleep apnea as well. Small jaws also cause crowded teeth and a poor bite.

Sleep apnea symptoms during pregnancy may predispose your kid for a lifetime of oxygen deprivation from poor breathing.

If you suffer from snoring, contact your doctor and/or your dentist today. They will help you learn more about what you can do to stop snoring tonight.

Get A Mist Humidifier

Dry air can cause irritation in your nose or throat, and it can also worsen snoring. If you use a mist humidifier at night, it will help add moisture into the air and soothe any nasal congestion or throat irritation.

If you don’t have a humidifier, then it might be worth buying one! They’re great for when your little ones arrive, to help them breathe easier through cold and flu season.

Sleep Apnea Symptoms In Pregnancy

The risks of sleep apnea during pregnancy

If your snore during pregnancy, it may be as serious as sleep apnea. Snoring doesnt necessarily mean you have sleep apnea, but its closely related.

Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder where breathing stops during sleeping. Usually, this is just for a few seconds but can last even longer. It can be very frightening for those around the sleeping person. Sleep apnea causes exhaustion. It prevents you from getting a restful, growth inducing sleep.

As the risk of sleep apnea symptoms increase in pregnancy, it may be the first time you have ever dealt with the problem. You may begin to snore loudly, and then seem to stop breathing. This pause in breathing will usually be followed by a choking sound.

Sleep apnea is linked to serious health problems such as brain and heart disease. But the risks of pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes also increase.

Open Your Nasal Passages

Many pregnant women snore because of swollen nasal passages, but clearing them up is an easy and effective solution. Nasal strips, which you can purchase at a drugstore, pull your nostrils open and create more space in the nasal passages.

You can also try taking a hot shower right before you go to sleep to open up your nasal passages. Rinsing your nose with saltwater while in the shower can help, too. You can either purchase a saline solution or mix together half a teaspoon of salt, half a teaspoon of baking soda, and a cup of distilled water. Neti pots are also a helpful remedie for congested nasal passages.

The Shape Of Your Nose

If the thin wall between your nostrils didn’t form quite right, one side can be smaller than the other — that’s called a deviated septum. That can make it harder for you to breathe and make you snore. The same can happen if your nose was hurt in an accident. Talk to your doctor if you think something like this is going on with you — surgery can sometimes fix it.

Use A Snoring Mouthpiece Or Nasal Strips

There are several over the counter and prescription based products available to stop pregnancy snoring. Two common products are anti-snoring mouthpieces and nasal strips. Both products are non-invasive, affordable, and easy to use. Pregnancy snoring mouthpieces may require some molding to your mouth, but most products can be custom formed in the comfort of your own home. The mouthpieces stop pregnancy snoring by holding your tongue in place so that it does not block the airway in the back of your throat which causes the sound of snoring. Some recent studies show that you can take your mouthpiece to the delivery room with you and it can even help you during the pushing stage of labor. I have personally reviewed dozens of pregnancy snoring mouthpieces and there is a lot to consider when choosing the right one. I encourage you to visit this table which breaks down the pros and cons of each brand.

If you prefer to not have a device in your mouth during the night time, you can buy nasal strips to avoid pregnancy snoring. The nasal strips open up your nasal passage so you can breathe through your nose better and not your mouth, which eliminates the cause of snoring.

Pregnancy Increases Your Body Mass Index

How To Avoid Snoring During Pregnancy?

An increase in weight during pregnancy isinevitable.

During pregnancy, a woman would put on 10-12.5 kg of weight on an average. Thats quite a significant weight gain and it comes with repercussions as well.

At some point, it brings a change in yourbreathing patterns. The more the uterus expands, the greater the weight gain, themore likely you are to end up snoring.

Also, there are changes in the position ofthe uterus as it expands. It tends to grow upwards and outwards. As a result, the diaphragm is also pushed up lowering the residual volume in the lungs. Thiscauses disruption in the normal flow of air and snoring becomes unavoidable.
