Snoring may seem like a laughable habit until you realize the very real effects. Snoring is a serious breathing disorder that harms social interactions and your health. It can be caused by a number of lifestyle and genetic factors, per Mayo Clinic. The anatomy of your mouth and sinuses, alcohol consumption, allergies, a common cold, and your weight can all bring on a case of sawing logs.

Snoring isnt only a nuisance for snorers, it can disrupt their bedtime companions as well. You can DIY snoring solutions, but it is recommended to see a doctor to check for more serious conditions like obstructive sleep apnea first.

Keep in mind that these devices should only be considered if obstructive sleep apnea has been ruled out with a sleep study administered by a healthcare provider.

Here are the best anti-snoring devices on the market.

Avoid Alcohol Before Bed

Not only does alcohol increase snoring, drinking before bed can even induce obstructive sleep apnea in people who dont have the disorder. Alcohols effect on snoring and sleep is dose-related, so if you tend to drink multiple drinks, start by cutting back. If that doesnt reduce your snoring, try to stop drinking a few hours before bed or consider cutting out alcohol altogether.

When Its Time For Snoring Treatment

Its easy to ignore snoring after all, it happens when youre asleep. But if your significant other has banished you to the guest room, its probably time to weigh your options.

To get to the bottom of your nighttime noisemaking, talk to your doctor. They can look for underlying causes like chronic congestion or nasal obstruction. Your doctor may recommend a sleep study. You spend the night in a sleep lab so doctors can monitor you while you slumber.

Its important to get a comprehensive workup to find out whats causing your snoring, Dr. Reisman says. If you have apnea, make sure to get the treatment you need to take care of your long-term health.

What The Experts Think

Why do we snore anyway?

Dr. Brandon Peters-Mathews, a board-certified physician in both neurology and sleep medicine who currently practices at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, explained that snoring occurs due to the vibration of tissues within the throat when the airway muscles relax during sleep.

Most commonly, this is due to turbulent airflow affecting the soft palate, uvula, or base of the tongue, Peters-Mathews said.

Difficulty breathing through the nose may predispose toward mouth breathing and snoring. If the mouth comes open at night, the lower jaw and tongue may shift backwards, affecting airflow through the throat, he added.

So, could snoring be dangerous?

If snoring occurs infrequently without other associated symptoms, it alone may not be problematic, Peters-Mathews said. However, it is often a sign of underlying problems breathing during sleep. It may be a warning sign of associated sleep apnea .

When I told him about our experience using the different devices we tried, Peters-Mathews said he wasnt surprised by the outcome.

Both external and internal nasal dilators may increase airflow through the nose and reduce snoring, he said. Unfortunately, these would not be expected to adequately resolve associated sleep apnea.

Instead of turning to over-the-counter devices, Peters-Mathews advises that all chronic snoring should be evaluated by a sleep physician.

How Expensive Are Anti

Stop Snoring Solution Custom

Anti-snoring mouthpieces typically cost between $50 and $150 apiece. MADs are a bit more expensive, with an average price range of $75 to $150 per device. Most TRDs cost $100 or less. Free shipping may or may not be available, depending on the manufacturers delivery policy, but full refunds are usually granted if returns are allowed. Some brands also offer their mouthguards at a discounted rate if you purchase two or more at once.

$50 to $150 might sound expensive for a device that will, in all likelihood, need to be replaced within two years. However, anti-snoring mouthpieces cost much less than upper airway surgery and other medical procedures intended to treat snoring symptoms.

Strengthen Your Mouth And Tongue

Snoring occurs when soft tissue in your throat partly blocks the airway and airflow causes the tissue to vibrate, producing the telltale noise. Some research suggests that strengthening the mouth and tongue may help prevent snoring.

Researchers in Brazil found that volunteers who performed the moves below daily over three months reduced their snoring frequency by 36 percent and the intensity of snores by 59 percent compared with those who didnt do the exercises.

The short exercise routine, done three times a day, includes moves that the researchers say can be done after brushing your teeth or even while driving your car.

Here are four exercises to try to help you stop snoring :

Exercise 1: Push the tip of the tongue against the roof of the mouth and slide the tongue backward.

Exercise 2: Suck the tongue upward against the roof of the mouth and press the entire tongue against the roof of the mouth.

Exercise 3: Force the back of the tongue against the floor of the mouth while keeping the tip of the tongue in contact with the bottom front teeth.

Exercise 4: Elevate the soft palate and the uvula while making the vowel sound A.

Ruling Out More Serious Causes

Snoring could indicate sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder where your breathing is briefly interrupted many times each night. Normal snoring doesnt interfere with the quality of your sleep as much as sleep apnea, so if youre suffering from extreme fatigue and sleepiness during the day, it could be an indication of sleep apnea or another sleep-related breathing problem. Call your doctor if you or your sleep partner have noticed any of the following red flags:

  • You snore loudly and heavily and are tired during the day.
  • You stop breathing, gasp, or choke during sleep.
  • You fall asleep at inappropriate times, such as during a conversation or a meal.

Home Remedies For Snoring: How To Stop Snoring Naturally

There are several ways to address snoring, depending on whats causing it. Some at-home remedies include:

Work toward a healthy weight

Extra weight is one of the primary causes of snoring in both children and adults, Dr. Reisman says. During sleep, fatty tissue in the neck can press on the throat, blocking the airways when the throat muscles relax. Losing weight can literally take the pressure off.

Relieve stuffiness

In people with chronic nasal congestion, medications like antihistamines or steroid nasal sprays can help you breathe easy and turn down the dial on the nighttime noise.

Change your position

Try propping up the head of your bed. And snoozing on your side instead of your back may also cause less snoring.

Open your nose

Opening your nasal passages at night can help cut down on snoring. Adhesive nasal strips placed on the bridge of the nose lift your nostrils open to improve airflow. Another option is nasal dilators, which you insert into the nostrils to expand the nasal opening. Both strips and dilators are inexpensive and easy to find at the drugstore.

What Worked Best: Smart Nora

Sleep Doctor-Recommended Products to Help Stop Snoring | Dr. Michael Breus

If you dont have sleep apnea and still snore, your doctor may suggest positional therapy. The worst position is on your back, said Carleton. When you sleep on your back, that actually compresses your breathing system more, and it makes it more likely for you to have those gasping sounds or to snore.

Technically the Smart Nora doesnt flip you onto your side, but it does slightly move your head when it catches you snoring, in practicality often resulting in your shifting from your back to your side. To accomplish this, the system includes a wireless, mic-equipped device that can sit bedside or be mounted on a wall to detect snoring. Once it does so, the Smart Nora device communicates with an under-bed base station that pumps air through a tube to an insert that lives inside your pillow.

Occasionally, that gentle pillow motion did wake me up, which caused me to switch positions. Controls on the base station allow you to adjust the pillow-elevation level so youre less likely to be jolted awake if all you need is a tiny nudge. The mic device also has an adjustable sensitivity setting, if your room is noisy or youre just finding your pillow to be inflating more often than you want it to. I took a break from using the device for a while after we first published this article, before going back to it for follow-up. It continues to work for me as well as it did during my initial testing.

Medical Treatments For Snoring

CPAP for sleep apnea

If your snoring is caused by obstructive sleep apnea, an effective snoring treatment is continuous positive airway pressure .6 An air pump is attached to a mask to keep your airway open while you sleep.

The gold standard treatment for sleep apnea is CPAP therapy and it may also work as a treatment for snoring.6

Treating sleep apnea with CPAP may enable you to enjoy a more restful, less disturbed sleep and help you wake up with more energy and focus.

If CPAP and/or an oral appliance havent worked for you, as a last resort your surgeon may recommend other more invasive surgical procedures to open up your airway.7

Dealing With Complaints About Your Snoring

Its common to be caught off guardand feel a little hurtwhen a partner complains about your snoring. After all, you probably didnt even realize it was happening. And although it might seem silly that snoring can cause such relationship turmoil, its a common and a very real problem.

If you dismiss your partners concerns and refuse to try to solve your snoring problem, youre sending a clear message to your partner that you dont care about their needs. This could mean your relationship is in trouble, and thats a bigger problem than the snoring.

Keep the following in mind as you and your partner work together to find a solution to your snoring:

Snoring is a physical issue. Its nothing to be embarrassed about. Like a pulled muscle or a common cold, improving the condition is in your hands.

Avoid taking it personally. Try not to take your partners frustration as a personal critique or attack. Your partner loves you, just not the snoring.

Take your partner seriously. Avoid minimizing complaints. Lack of sleep is a health hazard and can make your partner feel miserable all day.

Make it clear that you prioritize the relationship. If you and your partner have this understanding, youll both do what it takes to find a cure for the snoring.

Address inappropriate behavior. Although sleep deprivation can lead to moodiness and irritability, let your partner know that its not okay for them to throw an elbow or snap at you when youre snoring.
