    – In the latest watchOS 7 update Apple enables you to track sleep using the Apple Watch. watchOS 7 works with Apple Watch Series 3, 4, 5 and the new Apple Watch Series 6 we’re expecting. It isn’t compatible with Series 1 or 2. 

    Sleep tracking has been a much-wanted feature for the Apple Watch and has been available previously in third-party apps.

    Now though, there is a Sleep app on the watch and it uses motion to detect your sleep time. You obviously need to be wearing your Apple Watch to track your sleep, so you’ll need to change your charging behaviour and juice up in the day. If you don’t, you’ll end up with no charge at 10am the next morning. 

    The good thing about Apple Watch sleep tracking is that it is set-and-forget, so your sleep will be tracked without you having to do anything. But it’s fully configurable as you’ll see. 


    Change The Time And Which Days You Get A Reminder Or Alarm

  • Open the Clock app and tap the Bedtime tab.
  • Under Schedule, tap Bedtime or Wake up.
  • Drag the Bedtime button  or the Alarm button . As you drag, your Bedtime reminder and Wake Up alarm automatically update.
  • Under Days Of Week Active, tap the days that you want to get reminders or alarms. Days that are orange are active.

    On the watch, you can see your sleep schedule, most recent data and a summary of your sleep consistency over the past 14 days.

    You can see more data on the Apple Health iOS app. When you open it up and head for the Sleep section, you can also see the average time spent in bed and time spent asleep over a month. You can also see a series of highlights that range from average sleep over seven days as well as heart rate during sleep. 

    The importance of seeing that heart rate information during this time is that it can give you a sense of how your body recovers from the day and can also be a sign of whether you’re in a good state of health. Heart rate during sleep can vary from 40-100bpm, and can be influenced by a range of things like exercise or drinking.

    How Can You Make Sure Your Apple Watch Is Tracking Sleep

    Apple’s Sleep app also allows you to track sleep from your iPhone, which is based around the bedtime schedule that you will have to create when you set up the Sleep app. This is synchronous: whether you set it up on the Apple Watch or iPhone first, it should automatically sync with the other device and activate Sleep during your scheduled bedtime.

    To make sure your Apple Watch is recording sleep, look for the Sleep app on your home screen . From there you can enable tracking sleep with the Apple Watch that will forward that data to the iOS Apple Health app. It’s here where you can also enable charging reminders and automatically turn on the Do Not Disturb mode at night – though if you want to switch it on manually, look for the new ‘Bedtime’ button on your control center.

    Does The Apple Watch Have Enough Battery To Track Sleep

    Battery life has been pointed to as a reason why Apple might have been reluctant to offer its own sleep tracking app in the past. Apple still states an 18 hour battery life for its smartwatch, which hasn’t changed since the first Watch. Any battery improvements have been canceled out by features like the Apple Watch 5’s always-on screen.

    To make sure you have enough battery to track sleep through the night, Apple requires your watch to be charged to at least 30% to enable it. 

    If you don’t, the Watch will prompt you to charge before going to bed. When it’s got enough juice, your phone will alert you that it’s ready to join you in bed. In our time we found that sleep tracking sucked up around 20% battery on average, so it’s definitely going to impact how much battery you’re left with in the morning.

    How To Track Sleep On Apple Watch And Change Settings

    Steps to set up Sleep on Apple Watch:

    Open the Sleep app on the Apple watch or the Health app on iPhone and on-screen instructions will be shown on setting up. To change or turn off the next wake-up alarm: Open the Sleep app, tap on current bedtime, and either click on turn off the alarm or set a new time. This is only applicable to the immediate next wake up alarm, after which it resumes back to the normal schedule. To add or change a sleep schedule: Open the Sleep app, tap on Full Schedule, and select between ‘Change a sleep schedule’, ‘Add a sleep schedule’, ‘Change your sleep goal’, and ‘Change Wind Down time’. After this, set the days for your schedule, adjust wake up time and bedtime, set alarm options and/or remove or cancel a sleep schedule. How to track sleep on Apple watch: Open the Sleep app on the Apple watch and scroll down to the amount of sleep from the previous night and the sleep average trend over the last 14 days. To change sleep options, open Settings on the Apple watch device, tap Sleep and choose between the following options: Sleep Mode, Showtime, Sleep Tracking, Charging reminders, and Wake to haptic taps. These settings allow you to customize your experience with the Apple Sleep feature. The changes in these settings can be accessed and modified through the Health app on iPhone as well.

    What Do You Need To Access The Apple Watch Sleep App

    You’ll need an Apple Watch that is capable of running watchOS 7, the last major software update set to roll out for Apple’s smartwatch. You’ll also need an iPhone that runs iOS 14, which requires an iPhone 6s or later.

    How to Track Sleep in the Apple Watch 5

    Before you head to bed with your best Apple Watch band strapped around your wrist, you’ll need to actually launch the Sleep app and set it up. The first time you launch the Sleep app, you will be prompted through a ton of different screens to set up your sleep schedule. You’ll need to set what time you want to wake up and go to bed, set if you want an alarm, and what sound that alarm will make, and you’ll need to set up if you want sleep tracking and Wind Down enabled. It sounds like a lot, but the process is pretty straightforward — here’s how you do it!

  • Launch the Sleep app on your Apple Watch.
  • Tap Next. You’ll need to scroll down to the bottom of the screen.
  • Adjust the time for your sleep goal by using the + and buttons.

  • Tap Done to finish setting up.

  • Sleep Data Is Modest And Not Particularly Actionable

    Apple’s sleep tracking app interface is simple. Tell it your preferred “bedtime” schedule — in my case, 11 p.m. to just before 6 a.m. — and it will be looking out for sleep during those times . It turns out that you must set up tracking schedules to cover each individual day of the week or use separate schedules for weekdays and weekends. I didn’t realize until too late that the Watch hadn’t recorded data for two full nights because I hadn’t set up a separate weekend schedule to cover them.

    Assuming the Watch gathers your data properly, you’ll see a very modest display of data, including a bar representing your total “time asleep,” the timestamps indicating sleep start and end points, and a bar chart covering the last 14 days. If you want a deeper dive, you can open the Health app on an iPhone to see your “average time in bed” and “average time asleep” — and under some conditions, a correlation of your overnight heart rate data with your sleeping schedule. When I checked the Health app, one day the heart rate data was there, but another day it disappeared from the app’s list of Highlights and I couldn’t find it.

    Apple has suggested it’s providing little data to keep users from obsessing over their sleep schedules, as that might inadvertently generate even more anxiety or restlessness. I’m still not sure whether that’s truly an act of kindness or just a convenient excuse for underwhelming functionality.

    Monitor Your Sleep With Your Apple Watch And Iphone

    The Sleep app was first unveiled at WWDC 2020, and has since been rolled out on wrists around the world, but if you don’t usually wear your watch at night you’ll be missing out 

    Here, we answer the big questions about how it works and nudges you to change your overnight Apple smartwatch habits.

    Apples Wind Down Is Better Than Its Sleep Tracking

    Though I’m not thrilled with the sleep tracking functionality, Apple did a nice job with a related set of watchOS 7 and iOS 14 features called Wind Down. Rather than just telling you how much you slept, Wind Down provides a holistic approach to weaning you off your phone at night, softly encouraging you to settle down before a full Do Not Disturb regime kicks in.

    If you prefer to use apps to relax, you can create iOS shortcuts specific to settling down, such as turning on a music playlist or podcast, opening an app for reading or journaling, or accessing apps for yoga and meditation. These shortcuts will appear on the iPhone’s Lock Screen so you’re reminded to use them, and you can also initiate a watchOS Wind Down sleep mode that begins however many minutes you prefer before your scheduled bedtime.

    These kinds of features may seem simple to implement, but they’re actually thoughtful, OS-level integrations that show how sleep tracking functionality could become part of a larger sleep management experience for some users. I might want to keep using Wind Down even in the absence of sleep tracking.

    What Apple Watch Devices Work With Sleep Tracking

    WatchOS 7 and the Sleep app associated with it are only compatible with particular Apple Watches. These include the Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 4, Apple Watch Series 5, Apple Watch Series 6, and Apple Watch SE.

    If you own an original Apple Watch or Series 1 or 2 model, you can’t use the Sleep app. You’ll also need an iPhone that runs iOS 14 which means anything newer than an iPhone 6s.

    Wearable Battery Life Remains The Biggest Problem

    Ever since the first Apple Watch arrived in 2015, Apple has stuck to the same battery life guarantee: 18 hours of run time between charges. The actual number can be much lower if you use the watch to make long phone calls, constantly download data, or track extended runs or workouts. But on the other hand, the latest Apple Watches quietly exceed the 18-hour promise if you disable or only lightly use their new features. Regardless, Apple’s guideline was simple: Put the watch on your wrist each morning, don’t worry about battery life all day, then place it on a charger each night, and repeat ad infinitum.

    Given that the company has had five years to prepare for the addition of sleep tracking — which obviously requires users to wear their Watch overnight — Apple could have boosted battery life any year with a bigger housing or more power-efficient parts to enable multiday run times. Some competitors have made those choices, relying heavily on longer run times to differentiate their devices. Apple instead decided to market its way around design compromises, recently floating the idea that users should recharge their Watches during morning showers.
