Sleep tracking tech is rapidly becoming ubiquitous: This month, Apple added the feature to tens of millions of Apple Watches in a free watchOS 7 software update, and in August.

But despite years of work by researchers and wearable developers, meaningfully useful sleep tracking remains more a dream than a reality. After trying the feature in prerelease versions of watchOS 7, I spent the past week testing Apples finished sleep tracking app, which meant changing my daily charging routine, wearing my Watch to bed each night, and checking my phone for insights each day. Having gone through that process, Im convinced Ive experienced the kernel of a valuable solution, but just like the very first Apple Watch, it still feels half-baked.

Here are some of the things I discovered during my testing regimen.

What Data Does The Apple Watch Sleep Tracking App Collect

On the watch, you can see your sleep schedule, most recent data and a summary of your sleep consistency over the past 14 days.

You can see more data on the Apple Health iOS app. When you open it up and head for the Sleep section, you can also see the average time spent in bed and time spent asleep over a month. You can also see a series of highlights that range from average sleep over seven days as well as heart rate during sleep.

The importance of seeing that heart rate information during this time is that it can give you a sense of how your body recovers from the day and can also be a sign of whether youre in a good state of health. Heart rate during sleep can vary from 40-100bpm, and can be influenced by a range of things like exercise or drinking.

How To Setup Sleep Tracking In Apple Watch

While Sleep tracking can be enabled on the Apple Watch itself, the easier way to do this is through iPhone. Before you proceed, make sure that your iPhone is running iOS 14 and the Apple Watch is running watchOS 7.

Step 1: Open Health application on your iPhone. When the app opens, select Browse from the bottom of the screen and then tap on the Sleep option.

Step 2: You now need to create your Sleep Schedule. Tap on the Full Schedule & Options and then under Full Schedule, select Set Your First Schedule.

Step 3: After you are done selecting the days of the week, bedtime, and wake up time, tap the Add button at the top-right corner to add the schedule.

Step 4: You can now set Sleep Goal and Wind Down. Once done, tap on the Options section for more options.

Step 5: In the Options menu, toggle ON options Turn On Automatically and Track Time in Bed with iPhone which will automatically enable Do Not Disturb mode.

Step 6: Now scroll down and on the Manage Sleep in the Apple Watch App option and enable the settings that you want.

Thats it! The sleep tracking feature is not enabled for your Apple Watch. So now, whenever you go to bed, the smartwatch will automatically start tracking and you can check out the stats in the Health app.

Apples Wind Down Is Better Than Its Sleep Tracking

Though Im not thrilled with the sleep tracking functionality, Apple did a nice job with a related set of watchOS 7 and iOS 14 features called Wind Down. Rather than just telling you how much you slept, Wind Down provides a holistic approach to weaning you off your phone at night, softly encouraging you to settle down before a full Do Not Disturb regime kicks in.

If you prefer to use apps to relax, you can create iOS shortcuts specific to settling down, such as turning on a music playlist or podcast, opening an app for reading or journaling, or accessing apps for yoga and meditation. These shortcuts will appear on the iPhones Lock Screen so youre reminded to use them, and you can also initiate a watchOS Wind Down sleep mode that begins however many minutes you prefer before your scheduled bedtime.

These kinds of features may seem simple to implement, but theyre actually thoughtful, OS-level integrations that show how sleep tracking functionality could become part of a larger sleep management experience for some users. I might want to keep using Wind Down even in the absence of sleep tracking.

How To Edit Your Apple Watch Sleep Settings

Later, you can edit your wake schedule and settings by returning to the Health app, or you can do it on the Apple Watch:

  • On your watch, press the Digital Crown and tap Sleep from the list of apps.

  • If you want to modify your wake up for tomorrow morning, tap your schedule under Next. Then tap and adjust your settings. You can change your wakeup time, for example, turn the alarm off, or change your alarm sound.

  • If you want to change the wake up details for another day later in the week, scroll down and tap Full Schedule. Then make any changes.

    Waking Up With Apple Watch

    Within Bedtime mode you can also change how youre woken up. The default is to have no alarm, but you can set a silent alarm which rouses you using the Apple Watchs Taptic engine or a standard audio alarm.

    When you edit the Schedule just scroll to the bottom and choose Wake Up Alarm. Toggle this on and then tap Sound & Haptics.

    Here you can select a vibrate option and some soothing sounds for an alarm. If you want the haptic only just turn the volume to minimum.

    Data Tracking With Autosleep


    The next morning, open the app and you can see how long you were in bed and how long you actually slept. As the app records each night’s sleep, it keeps track of the average amount of sleep you get.

    On the watch, swipe down on the app’s screen to view more data about your sleep. You will be able to view the amount of total sleep, deep sleep, and overall quality of sleep, how long you were awake during the night, and your average heart rate during the night. You can also see a history of your sleep for as long as you’ve been using the app.

    To see even more information, open AutoSleep on your iPhone and swipe down the different screens. Though other sleep apps are free, AutoSleep is worth the price for its wealth of details.

    What Apple Watch Devices Work With Sleep Tracking

    WatchOS 7 and the Sleep app associated with it are only compatible with particular Apple Watches. These include the Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 4, Apple Watch Series 5, Apple Watch Series 6, and Apple Watch SE.

    If you own an original Apple Watch or Series 1 or 2 model, you can’t use the Sleep app. You’ll also need an iPhone that runs iOS 14 which means anything newer than an iPhone 6s.

    Ever since the first Apple Watch arrived in 2015, Apple has stuck to the same battery life guarantee: 18 hours of run time between charges. The actual number can be much lower if you use the watch to make long phone calls, constantly download data, or track extended runs or workouts. But on the other hand, the latest Apple Watches quietly exceed the 18-hour promise if you disable or only lightly use their new features. Regardless, Apples guideline was simple: Put the watch on your wrist each morning, dont worry about battery life all day, then place it on a charger each night, and repeat ad infinitum.

    Given that the company has had five years to prepare for the addition of sleep tracking which obviously requires users to wear their Watch overnight Apple could have boosted battery life any year with a bigger housing or more power-efficient parts to enable multiday run times. Some competitors have made those choices, relying heavily on longer run times to differentiate their devices. Apple instead decided to market its way around design compromises, recently floating the idea that users should recharge their Watches during morning showers.

    Sleep Data Is Modest And Not Particularly Actionable

    Apples sleep tracking app interface is simple. Tell it your preferred bedtime schedule in my case, 11 p.m. to just before 6 a.m. and it will be looking out for sleep during those times . It turns out that you must set up tracking schedules to cover each individual day of the week or use separate schedules for weekdays and weekends. I didnt realize until too late that the Watch hadnt recorded data for two full nights because I hadnt set up a separate weekend schedule to cover them.

    Assuming the Watch gathers your data properly, youll see a very modest display of data, including a bar representing your total time asleep, the timestamps indicating sleep start and end points, and a bar chart covering the last 14 days. If you want a deeper dive, you can open the Health app on an iPhone to see your average time in bed and average time asleep and under some conditions, a correlation of your overnight heart rate data with your sleeping schedule. When I checked the Health app, one day the heart rate data was there, but another day it disappeared from the apps list of Highlights and I couldnt find it.

    Apple has suggested its providing little data to keep users from obsessing over their sleep schedules, as that might inadvertently generate even more anxiety or restlessness. Im still not sure whether thats truly an act of kindness or just a convenient excuse for underwhelming functionality.
