  • In the Fitbit app, tap the Today tab , then tap the sleep tile .
  • From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the sleep tile.
  • Tap Today or another day to see details.
  • Swipe up from the clock face to see Fitbit Today.

    If a Fitbit stops automatically tracking sleep, restart it using the specific directions for that Fitbit model. If the Fitbit is still not tracking sleep automatically, users can adjust the devices sleep sensitivity level or start and stop the sleep tracker manually using the Fitbit app.

    Understanding How Fitbit Detects Your Sleep

    Fitbit recognizes that you are sleeping only when your body is resting without any significant movements for an hour.

    Once your body passes that hour, your Fitbit begins gathering data about the quality of your sleep.

    For the first few hours , your Fitbit categorizes your sleep into three categories: restless, awake, or asleep.

    Once you pass the 3-hour threshold, it starts recording different types of sleepcalled your sleep stages. These stages include light, deep, and REM

    Your Fitbit app then uses those sleep stages to calculate a sleep score.

    Not all Fitbits support sleep staging

    Only Fitbits with heart-rate sensors can record your sleep stages.

    Additionally, you must wear these Fitbits on your wrist/arm and set them to wrist mode to collect your sleep stage information.

    However, both the Fitbit Charge HR and Fitbit Surge are exceptions and cant record sleep stages, even though they include heart rate sensors.

    If your Fitbit does not have a heart rate sensor or is the Charge HR and Surge, it can only record when you are asleep, restless, or awake.

    Sleep Stages: What Are They

    Your body goes through several sleep stages each night while you sleep. Each one lasts about 90 minutes before you cycle through to the next one. During each stage of the sleep cycle you alternate between deep sleep and light sleep.

    When you arent in Rapid Eye Movement sleep, youll alternate between the two Non-Rapid Eye Movement stages. You spend more time in deep sleep during the beginning of the night.

    When you enter into REM sleep, you experience vivid dreams . The amount of time you spend in REM sleep typically increases as the night goes on. Earlier in the night your REM stages are brief, but when you get closer to waking up youll spend a lot more time in the vivid dreaming stage of sleep.

            I’m glad you jumped here ! Try doing the following:

            • Make sure that your Charge 2 is updated with the new firmware version
            • Log out of your Fitbit App
            • Force quit the App
            • Shut off your phone and turn it on after 1-2 minutes
            • Turn on the Bluetooth
            • Log back into your Fitbit App

            Test your tracker tonight to see how it goes.

            Lastly, since your tracker didn’t record your sleep and you remeber the start and end times for the past two nights, log them by doing the following:

            • From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the sleep tile. This is the tile that says “How did you sleep?”
            • Tap the + icon in the top right corner and tap Add Sleep Log.
            • Enter the data on “Sleep Start” and “Sleep End” and then, “Save“.

            I am not able to update manually, my firmware is 22.44.12, which makes think it is way out of date. I did restart my tracker. I believe the issue is it’s not detecting my heart rate and it is set to auto.

            It didn’t track my 2 hours of excerside today either

                How To Make Fitbit Track Sleeping Work

                Surge/Charge HR/Force and Charge

                Surge helps track sleep automatically. All you need to do is to wear your device to bed. You will be able to view your stats when the tracker syncs with your account.


                After getting into bed, tap you Flex for about 2 seconds. The tracker will vibrate and display 2 slowly dimming lights as an indicator for sleep mode. Goal progress is not displayed while the device is in this mode.

                After you wake up, tap your Flex rapidly for about 2 seconds. The device will exit sleep mode. When you do this, the Flex will flash and vibrate 3 times and then display a spinning light pattern. You can view your stats after Flex has synced with your Fitbit account.


                To activate sleep tracking, hold the button on the tracker for several seconds. You will notice the stopwatch begin to count or the icons start to blink. This is an indication that the device is in sleep mode. After you wake up, hold the trackers button for about 2 seconds to exit sleep mode.
