How Does Fitbit Track Sleep And What Is The Fitbit Sleep Score

With all the changes in routine and activity levels, sleep patterns for you and your employees may be fluctuating more than normal. Sleep is an essential component of health, and its timing, duration, and quality are critical determinants of a persons overall health, playing a role in metabolic and emotional regulation, performance, and memory.

The best way to know if you are getting enough zzzs is not to guess, but to track it. Your employees can easily track their nightly sleep with a Fitbit device. Doing so can help you look for patterns and recognize when you need to get more rest and recharge.

Sleep Stages and the Fitbit Sleep Score

Fitbits sleep feature estimates sleep stages using a combination of movement and heart-rate patterns. When you havent moved for about an hour, your tracker or smartwatch assumes that youre asleep. Additional data, such as the length of time of movements that are indicative of sleep behavior , can also help confirm that youre asleep.

While youre sleeping, your device tracks the beat-to-beat changes in your heart rate, known as heart rate variability . These numbers fluctuate as you transition between light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep stages. When you sync your device in the morning, Fitbit uses movement and heart rate patterns to estimate sleep cycles from the previous night.

Most Fitbit users get a sleep score between 72 and 83. Typical sleep score ranges are:

  • Excellent: 90-100
  • Poor: Less than 60

What I Was Looking For

I regularly test new activity and sleep trackers, but I also like to have one for real personal use, rather than just being a part of my ongoing tests.

And for me personally, there are a few things that make it more likely Ill stick with one, rather than leave it in a drawer after Ive finished reviewing it:

  • It looks good this matters if you wear it constantly and have to take it to bed with you!
  • It feels comfortable to wear during the day and in bed.
  • It appears accurate on measurements I can test myself, such as heart rate and steps. And to a certain extent, the time I probably fell asleep, times I woke up during the night and in the morning.
  • The App is easy to use, understand and interpret.
  • The App provides useful, actionable tips to help me sleep better.
  • If there are useful reminders to take action, such as do some exercise or get ready for bed.

Some of these points apply to the specific device, of course. And others apply to all of the new Fitbit devices, such as the sleep data on the App.

Since this is intended to be a look at the new sleep tracking, rather than a detailed review of the Alta HR itself, Ill cover it only briefly before looking at the Fitbit sleep tracking thats the same for other devices.

Comparing Fitbit Vs Garmin Sleep Tracking:

Well, as the two most popular fitness tracking brands, Fitbit and Garmin are always in battle. Both of them have almost the same features to offer and have come up with the sleep tracking feature as well. Hence, they put up quite a competition.

To make the competition a fair game, we came up with the idea to present a review on a review based on our personal opinion. We chose Fitbit Ionic and Garmin Vivoactive 3 Music. Also, to compare between the two, we used each for a limited span of time and checked each thing side by side.

Reviewing Fitbit Ionic Sleep Tracking:

To review the Fitbits features, we used the Fitbit Ionic watch and it was quite a healthy and tech-savvy ride.

The numerous features it had to offer were quite satisfying. We used it for all the running, cycling, and exercising activities and the GPS worked great for all.

Moreover, we loved the music feature it had to offer so that our activities did not sound dull and had the adequate cheeriness we needed. The 2.5 gigabyte of space for music is quite something.

While using Fitbit Ionic, apart from the standard fitness features, the main concern was about how well the sleep tracking feature works, and it satisfied us quite well.

The most impressive thing we found out about it was the record is kept of the sleeping habits of a person. We even got to know our own sleeping patterns through this feature.

Customize The Exercise Shortcuts


Out of the box, the Blaze offers running, cycling, weight training, treadmill running, elliptical training and workout as default modes for exercise tracking.

You can add or remove exercises that appear on the Blaze by heading into the Fitbit app. Click on the Blaze icon and select Exercise Shortcuts. You’ll be able to add modes like yoga, kickboxing, pilates, tennis and bootcamp.

The running mode is the only one that’s customizable, however, allowing you to set up whether it’s distance based or time based, as well as choosing the distance and time. Word of warning: you can only have seven workout modes at a time.

New Fitbit Features Deliver Data Previously Only Available Through A Sleep Lab

Which Apps Are Compatible With Fitbit

There are several apps that will link up to Fitbit, including MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, Strava, MapMyRun and RunKeeper. To find out all the compatible apps, tap on the Account icon in the top left of the Today tab > Third Party Apps > Compatible Apps. It will take you to the Fitbit website page that lists them all.

For tracking, Fitbit worked with sleep researchers and the National Sleep Foundation to highlight four specific types of sleep, which you see in a readout in the morning when you wake up.

Heres a breakdown, along with Fitbits explanation, of what each stage means:

Awake: When it comes to being awake during the night, many of us think that waking up at all is bad news. Turns out, waking up during the night is a normal part of sleep. In fact, waking up anywhere in the ballpark of 10-30 times in a single evening is normal.

So, if youre one of those people who roll over a few times during the night or get up to pee once or twice, youre just like everyone else. Theres nothing to be super worried about.

Light Sleep: Light sleep occurs when your body starts to slow down at night, its that moment when you start to fall asleep, but you could be easily woken. The best example is probably those moments when youre commuting and fall asleep on the train or in the passenger seat of your co-worker’s car. When youre in light sleep, you may be aware of what is going on around you, and someone can wake you up easily but youre still asleep.

During this sleep stage, your heart rate decreases slightly from what it is when youre awake. Just because you can be woken easily doesnt mean this isnt a useful stage light sleep helps a ton with mental and physical recovery, so you can feel better after an hour of light sleep than you did before you started to snooze.

How To See Your Notifications On The Fitbit Blaze

An upward swipe from the bottom of the home clock display will pull up your notifications, which can be deleted by swiping right on the notification itself. If you are in exercise mode or on a different screen other than the home screen, hold the bottom right button for three seconds and your notifications will appear.

How To See A Breakdown Of Your Daily Activity On Fitbit

Select the metric you want to see more information on from the Today tab, such as steps. This will bring up a summary in a list format of your entire history by day of that particular metric.

The graph at the top presets a weekly summary but a further tap on any of the days listed will give you an hourly summary for that day in a graph. You can also hold down on a particular hour to see the information in number format for 15-minute intervals.

Understanding How Fitbit Detects Your Sleep

Fitbit recognizes that you are sleeping only when your body is at rest without any significant movements for an hour.

Once your body passes that hour, your Fitbit begins gathering data about the quality of your sleep.

For the first few hours , your Fitbit categorizes your sleep into three categories: restless, awake, or asleep.

Once you pass the 3-hour threshold, it starts recording different types of sleepcalled your sleep stages. These stages include light, deep, and REM

Your Fitbit app then uses those sleep stages to calculate a sleep score.

Not all Fitbits support sleep staging

Only Fitbits with heart-rate sensors can record your sleep stages.

Additionally, you must wear these Fitbits on your wrist/arm and set them to wrist mode to collect your sleep stage information.

However, both the Fitbit Charge HR or Fitbit Surge are exceptions and cant record sleep stages, even though they both include heart rate sensors.

If your Fitbit does not have a heart rate sensor or is the Charge HR and Surge, it can only record when you are asleep, restless, or awake.

Log Out Of Your Account And Then Log Back In

Logging out forces the Fitbit app to reload all your information from the servers and display all sleep data correctly.

  • Open the Fitbit app.
  • Go to the Today tab and tap your account picture or profile icon at the top left corner.
  • Scroll all the way down and choose Log Out.
  • One logged out, tap Log In and follow the steps on the screen.

    App Page 2 A Closer Look At My Total Sleep

    The second page of the App shows you two main things: a visual representation of how much total sleep you had in the last week on top.

    And below theres a scrollable list of all your previous nights sleep mine goes back over a year, even registering my Charge 2 and Blaze data.

    Whats immediately clear is that I got a green star last night for hitting my personal total asleep goal of 7 hr 30 min. Great!

    I can also see that its only the second time Ive hit it in the past week, falling behind on the other 5 days. Not so great, so perhaps I need to think about why that is and pay more attention to my sleep schedule.

    A Workaround If Only Part Of Your Sleep Has Been Recorded

    There is a workaround if you find your nightly sleep data is incomplete. It is a manual solution that is not ideal but may be better than doing nothing.

    You can edit the sleep log in the smartphone app by tapping the 3 dots in the upper right corner of each sleep session. This gives you the option to edit or delete the line.

    So lets say you have two separate sleep sessions for the night. You could delete the first one and edit the start of the second one to coincide with when you actually went to bed. Its a good way of merging two or more half-night segments.

    The sleep stage info will be a bit messed up but the length of the sleep session will be correct. You might even find that sleep stage info has been deleted entirely for that night.

    Dont Select Begin Sleep Now Or Im Awake Prompts

    To get a detailed reading of the sleep stages, do not select begin sleep now in the Fitbit app or tap on Im awake when you get up in the morning.

    It sounds contradictory, but when you tap these prompts, it often disengages your Fitbit from automatically tracking your sleep.

    Consequently, your Fitbit will not track your stages of sleep used to calculate your sleep score.

    How Does Fitbit Know I’m Sleeping

    If you were to go to a doctor for a sleep study, your sleep stages would be measured by an electroencephalogram, which pays attention to your brain activity. Youd also be hooked up to other machines that monitor your muscle movements.

    While your Fitbit is not a replacement for going to see a sleep specialist, it detects some of the same things by monitoring your heart rate and your movement while youre sleeping or attempting to sleep. Using those measurements, you can make some reasonable guesses. For example, if your heart rate remains about the same and you dont move for an hour, then chances are good youre asleep.

    Fitbit monitors your heart rate variability while you sleep, which helps it determine when youre moving between different levels of sleep. The ratings arent going to be as robust as those you get from a doctor, but if youre looking for some basic information about yourself and how your sleep patterns, it can do the trick.

    Reset Sleep Goal Settings

    If you set a daily sleep goal, this setting can sometimes interfere with getting a sleep score. So, you can reset it or remove it and see if your sleep score appears.

  • Open the Fitbit app > Today tab.
  • Tap the Sleep tile.
  • In the upper corner, select the settings gear icon.
  • The settings gear icon is next to the + sign.
  • For iPhones, tap on the More Menu in the upper right corner.
  • Choose to Remove sleep goal.
  • We also suggest you repeat step 4 and remove your target bedtime and target wake-up time.
  • For Android phones, tap Time Asleep Goal and choose to remove it.
  • Repeat and remove your target bedtime and target wake-up time.
  • Verify you removed those sleep goals and targets by ensuring those metrics now say Set goal or Set Time.
  • Restart your Fitbit.
  • Find instructions on how to restart your Fitbit by the model in this article.
  • Once your Fitbit restarts, we suggest sleeping one night without any goals to see if your sleep score shows up.
  • If you get a sleep score, you can add in your sleep goal and target sleep schedule.
  • You do not need to set these to get a sleep score.
  • The General Accuracy Of Fitbit Sleep Trackers

    In a general view, the various attributes that Fitbit sleep trackers take into account are considered accurate and thus dependable to a given degree. According to a survey from users, the falling asleep time and waking time did not lag over most days. For example, the Fitbit Altra HR records no mistakes in cases when a user decides to use the bathroom or grab a glass of water at night. You can rely on this data as it is proven to be almost perfect.

    Its hard to determine the accuracy of the sleep stages by yourself. The fact that you can only compare Fitbits data with data captured in a sleep center gives us the benefit of doubt. The Sleep Insights tool allows you to compare your sleep data alongside your past 30 days and other users. This is the point where you have to rely on the manufacturers claims on accuracy.

    While Fitbit themselves has never stated 100% accuracy on their devices, in April 2017, an interesting report was published in the Sleep Journal. Data published in this report was pooled from sleep trackers which measure heart rate and movement and sleep lab tests. The report suggested that sleep trackers can be relied on to improve sleep behaviors. Fitbit has backed this report, too.

    Looking closely at data from the sleep insights, a lot of users reported that their sleep cycle rhymed with data of other users within their age bracket and gender. The accuracy concerning sleep patterns of people of different ages and genders is highly accurate and consistent.
