Fitbit Flex 2 Review: The First Waterproof Fitbit

It is, however, only one of two Fitbit trackers that are fully waterproof and boast the ability to track swimming as an exercise. You have to enter the length of your pool in order to accurately count laps, and this is done via the Fitbit app. We’re told that it works with front crawl , backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. The other waterproof Fitbit is the high-end smartwatch read our Fitbit Ionic review.

You can wear it in the shower or bath, unlike the other only water-resistant trackers from Fitbit. Also, see our round-up of the best waterproof swim trackers. We think that the Flex 2 might even be used by some Fitbit enthusiasts as a second tracker specifically for the pool.

The Flex 2 is Fitbit’s first properly waterproof fitness tracker, and can track your swimming as an exercise activity. We haven’t fully tested the Flex 2 on a rigorous swim, but will update this review when we have. The Flex 2 measures your Swim Duration, and calculates calorie burn during your time in the pool.

Fitbit doesn’t recommend extended exposure to water, so don’t leave it in a bucket of water overnight. Like you would!

Yahoo tech columnist David Pogue spoke to a Fitbit product manager who admitted that even the Fitbit Charge 2 could be worn in the shower without damage, as long as the shower isn’t super-powered. Pogue tried this out and had no problems with his Charge 2. But only the Flex 2 is guaranteed waterproof by Fitbit, and is the only Fitbit to actively track swimming.

Fitbit Flex 2 Review: Price

The Fitbit Flex 2 costs £79.99 . That’s the price for the wristband and tracker. If you think this is expensive, compare it to the cost of gym membership or a decent pair of running shoes. I actually saved the price of my original Flex tracker over a couple of months of walking rather than catching the bus or tube home.

The same will be true of the more advanced but similarly priced Flex 2. Also look out for the best online prices listed at the end of this review.

You don’t have to wear the Flex 2 as a wristband. There are bangle and pendant accessories to to hold the removable tracker. If you want the bangle or pendant holder for the Flex 2, you’ll have to buy them separately. The Silver Bangle or Pendant is slightly cheaper at £69.99, compared to the Gold Bangles or Pendant’s £79.99 price tag. Sadly it’s not possible to buy just the bangle or pendant with the tracker the wristband must be purchased to get your hands on the tracker.

The Fitbit Alta, with its larger, more informative screen costs more at £129.99 , and the heart-rate monitoring Fitbit Charge 2 costs £129.99 . So the Flex 2 is Fitbit’s most affordable wristband tracker.

Why Can Fitbit Track Sleeping

Fitbit Flex 2 Review With Full Features, Rating, Price ...

The ability of Fitbit trackers to track sleep patterns is down to the fact that its fitted with sensors called accelerometers. They help detect the wearers motion along with the direction and speed of the motion. When the tracker detects that you havent moved in over an hour, the algorithm assumes that you are asleep. This is often supported by the kind of movements you make while youre asleep such as rolling over. Your movements in the morning tell the tracker that you have woken up. This mechanism is not perfect and for this reason can falsely assume that youre asleep after you have stayed for too long without moving. When this happens, simply delete the sleep record from your dashboard.

Fitbit sleep tracking works differently for different models as explained below:

  • Fitbit Ultra, One, Flex and Zip: Enter the time you spent asleep on the Fitbit website or in the app. Fitbit will use the accelerometer data to establish whether you were asleep, awake or restless during that time frame. This data is based on the movements of your wrist during the time you said you were asleep.
  • Fitbit Surge, Charge HR, Charge, Force: These 4 models determine the beginning and end of your sleep automatically based on your movements for one hour. You can always enter the time manually if you feel autodetection is not accurate.

  • What Kind Of Sleep Tracking Does It Do

Sleep tracking is one step towards a better nights sleep. By seeing how much youre actually sleeping, you can work towards better sleep goals. Not only does the Fitbit Inspire track sleep, it also allows you to set silent vibration alarms and bedtime reminders. Going to sleep and waking up at roughly the same time each day is another step towards better sleep habits.

Because the Fitbit Inspire doesnt track heart rate, it cant determine if youre in light, deep, or REM sleep.

Because the Fitbit Inspire doesnt track heart rate, it cant determine if youre in light, deep, or REM sleep. Rather, it can only see your total time asleep based on your nighttime movement. If you dont move at all, the Fitbit Inspire will automatically log that as sleep time. If you toss and turn and change positions in bed, the Inspire will register that as a restless state. If you move so much that it would be impossible to be asleep, such as getting up and walking to the bathroom, then the Inspire will register that as awake time.

The app will calculate your total sleep time per night by subtracting your restless and awake time from the total time tracked. For example, if you slept for eight hours, but you were restless for half an hour and awake for half an hour, the time asleep will show seven hours.

    Check The Fitbit Battery Level

Is the Fitbit battery critically low?

If your battery is critically low, your wearable may have switched off sleep tracking during the night to preserve its battery.

Ensure you charge your Fitbit sufficiently before you go to bed.

If time is short, charge your Fitbit for 20-30 minutes before you go to sleepthis should provide enough battery to last through the night.

    How Accurate Are The Results

While trackers are considered generally accurate, they are also prone to errors. While it is easy to keep track of the number of steps, length and quality of sleep is a whole other ball game. It is virtually impossible for the trackers to determine when you fall asleep. A West Virginia University associate professor called Montgomery-Downs also calls into question the reliability of sleep monitors.

I am new to FitBit. I purchased the flex2 product. I am unclear on the recording my FitBit does of my sleep. I have read that all I have to do is wear this device to bed and it will track my sleep. I had a bad night last night and did start to sleep about 10:15 pm, but was awake and asleep until after midnight. The FitBit recorded my sleep starting at 12:15 am instead of 10:15 pm.

Also, I don’t understand when to start a sleep log or what a sleep log does. I tried to start a sleep log the other night and got a message that I “cannot create a sleep log, since one already exists”.

I think I can cause the FitBit to “start sleep” manually. Yes?.

Is it possible to edit my FitBit numbers after it automatically records my sleep?

Apparently there is no way to edit automatically recorded data, but you can delete that automatic log and replace it with one that you enter manually. I guess add a log that only includes the 2 hours the fitbit missed if you want to keep the data it recorded, too. So you’d add a sleep time of 10:15p-12:14a and it would just be added to your time asleep with no real sleep data .

Fitbit Not Tracking Sleep Or Is Not Accurate Lets Fix It

Fitbits are a great option if you want an insight into your sleep habits.

All Fitbit trackers except the Fitbit Zip monitor your sleep patterns, detecting how much time you spend awake, restless, and asleep.

If you own a newer version of Fitbit with a heart rate sensor, you get an even more detailed sleep report, showing light, deep, and REM sleep time.

These Fitbits use your movement and heart rate information to estimate how long you spend in light, deep, and Rapid Eye Movement sleep each night.

But what if the device on your wrist is not tracking sleep properly? Or its inconsistent or even inaccurate?

Does your Fitbit say youve only had 2 hours of sleep when in reality, youve know youve had 8? Or perhaps your sleep stages or sleep score are not showing?

If that sounds like your Fitbit and the Fitbit app, weve got some great troubleshooting tips that should get your Fitbit tracking your sleep accurately AND consistently!

      Features I Havent Really Used

I personally dont track my cycle due to the contraception Im on, but in the past I have used an app called Clue and I think I would still use this instead of the Fitbit tracker as I really love the circle layout and app design. However, I do think its a useful thing to include so its all in one place.

You can tell your Fitbit to buzz/notify you every hour to remind you to get up and move. I imagine this is super useful if you work in an office and are completely sedentary for a whole 8 hours, however because I work from home Im usually up and about mixing up my day with activities anyway.

I used to use the app Lifesum to track my calories and macros, but over the last year I havent felt the need to as you quickly get a good idea of roughly what carb/fat/protein ratio everything has and Im not strictly dieting.

However, if you havent tried a food/macro tracker like Lifesum before, the Fitbit food log could be super useful for you as it basically does the same as Lifesum. You enter the foods youve eaten in a day , and based on its database of information it will calculate the calories and macronutrients in each meal and each day. You can also scan barcodes of foods to make it even easier.
