    Hi all,

does anyone out there know why my FB app on iPhone doesn’t show the more detailed sleep pattern as on my wife’s new FB device? Is it because my Surge is a couple of years old?

It’s disappointing because the newer app sleep pattern is much more detailed.

Is there any way I can get the more detailed info?

Hello , have a warm welcome to the Fitbit Community, it’s great to have you on board.

Unfortunately, Sleep Stages are not available for the Surge, only on Blaze, Charge 2, Alta HR and the new Ionic. I understand your concern about Sleep Stages and appreciate your understanding about this situation.

I hope this resolves your inquiry, if there’s anything else I can do for you, please feel free to reply.

      • How To Power On Or Off A Fitbit Surge

The Fitbit Surge has a secure and comfortable fit and can track many activities, including yoga, hiking, and weightlifting.

Its a super-reliable fitness tracker that you can, fortunately, power off when necessary. To do so, follow these steps:

      • On the left side of the tracker, press the Home button.
      • Go to the Settings screen.
      • At the bottom right, tap on the arrow.
      • Select the checkmark to initiate the shutdown.
      • Thats all there is to it. To power the Fitbit Surge on, press any button on the device.

Press and hold the side button on the Versa 2 to launch Alexa. You can then issue your voice command. It’s also possible to launch Alexa with a swipe down from the top of the Versa 2’s display, but you have to change this in the Versa 2’s settings as the default is for Alexa to launch with a press and hold of the side button.

        Fitbit Dashboard And App

Fitbit is a favorite of mine for tracking your diet and health stats. You can use its food log in the app or on the online dashboard, track water, your weight and more. You can engage in challenges with friends and earn badges for accomplishments. Fitbit also can share data with many other popular apps and you can post to social media.

        Fitbit Surge Design And Features

        Fitbit Surge review

The Fitbit Surge is not much of a looker. Adopting the same textured elastomer band as the Charge and the Charge HR, it has a very drab, unattractive design that might be fine to wear at the gym, but not so much at in important business meetings. We tested the grey version and found, while you can pick it up in blue and tangerine, you cant disguise its underwhelming look.

Granted, sports watches are not exactly renowned for scoring high in the looks department, but we were hoping for something a little more sleek and elegant that could be worn all day.

On the wrist, its smaller in comparison to the TomTom Runner and takes up about the same space as an entry level Garmin or Polar sports watch. Put it next to the Charge and the Charge HR, and its a big step up in size, this is largely to accommodate its new screen.

There are three watch straps sizes ranging from small , large , x-large , so theres a fit for pretty much for most. We found it comfortable and secure to wear thanks to the watch-style metal buckle. If you look at the Surge side on, youll notice that it has a sloping body to pack in the GPS sensor. It doesnt alter the fit in any really telling way though.

The biggest new feature to get used to is having a nice big screen to view your data. Even if you go back to the Fitbit Ultra, screens have been pretty small, so the Surge signals a change with a 1.26-inch touchscreen display.

So I pretty much love my fitbit, and I bought the Surge right after Christmas. Four days ago it completely stopped tracking sleep and it’s driving me crazy. I changed the sensitivity, that did not fix the issue. I’ve re-started it, and that did not fix the issue. Any other options out there?

, sorry to hear that your device isn’t working as it should. Can you try initiating the start of your sleep on your phone and then when you wake up, hit “I am awake”. Then see if your device monitored your sleep. Please let me know what you find.

          Why Can Fitbit Track Sleeping

The ability of Fitbit trackers to track sleep patterns is down to the fact that its fitted with sensors called accelerometers. They help detect the wearers motion along with the direction and speed of the motion. When the tracker detects that you havent moved in over an hour, the algorithm assumes that you are asleep. This is often supported by the kind of movements you make while youre asleep such as rolling over. Your movements in the morning tell the tracker that you have woken up. This mechanism is not perfect and for this reason can falsely assume that youre asleep after you have stayed for too long without moving. When this happens, simply delete the sleep record from your dashboard.

Fitbit sleep tracking works differently for different models as explained below:

          • Fitbit Ultra, One, Flex and Zip: Enter the time you spent asleep on the Fitbit website or in the app. Fitbit will use the accelerometer data to establish whether you were asleep, awake or restless during that time frame. This data is based on the movements of your wrist during the time you said you were asleep.
          • Fitbit Surge, Charge HR, Charge, Force: These 4 models determine the beginning and end of your sleep automatically based on your movements for one hour. You can always enter the time manually if you feel autodetection is not accurate.

Why Would You Need To Know The Fitbit Model You Have

Different Fitbit models, including Flex, One, Zip, Charge, and Charge HR, come with different features and compatibilities.

Knowing the Fitbit type you have lets you know what it can and what it cannot do. It also lets you know Fitbits compatibilities. .

You will also need to know the Fitbit type you have so that you can set it up with the FitBit App. Once you download the Fitbit app on your phone, you will need to choose the Fitbit Type you have for setting up.

          Determining Why Notifications Are Missing

If you set up notifications but theyre not showing up on your Surge, first make sure that your tracker was close enough to your mobile device when the notifications were missed . Next, consider whether you miss the occasional notification or whether youre missing all your notifications. If its the former, syncing is likely the culprit. The surge will not receive notifications if it is syncing to your mobile device when the call or text is received. Lastly, Android users should be aware that Surge receives texts sent over SMS, not Google Messages. If notifications are in fact not working properly, please see:

Who Will Love The Fitbit Surge

It is sleek enough for either men or women to wear all day as a watch. Then when you want to track a workout, you don’t need to wear a heart rate monitor strap or use a separate app or device to track your speed and distance via GPS. You can view it all on your wrist, then see further details after syncing to the app or online dashboard.

The Surge is built for walkers, runners, and cyclists who want to use GPS and heart rate to track their workout speed, distance and exercise intensity, and who want to track step, calories and sleep all in one device.

You can track other exercise activity via the exercise timer and heart rate readings. You can track indoor walks and treadmill workouts with the Surge without GPS, it will use the accelerometer readings to give you speed and distance estimates.

If you already have been tracking your activity with a different Fitbit model, you can easily switch your same account to the Surge and continue with the same history, app, and online profile. Fitbit also has updated to allow you to link more than one Fitbit device to your same account, so you can use the Surge for workouts and another Fitbit for daily activity.

Don’t Miss: Is 4 Hours Of Sleep Better Than None

How Fitbit Detects What Stage Of Sleep Youre In

Ok, so your Fitbit might not meet the gold standard of using an electroencephalogram in a lab setting. Professional sleep studies detect your brain activity, eye movement, and muscle activity in a controlled environment.

What Fitbit does is estimate the amount of time youre spending in each sleep stage by using a combination of your movement and your heart-rate patterns. Your tracker assumes youre asleep if you havent moved in one hour. The device cross-references that with other data movements that indicate sleeping such as rolling over to confirm that you are asleep.

Your Fitbit then tracks your heart-rate variability the beat-to-beat changes in your heart-rate that fluctuate when you move between the different sleep stages. When you wake up and sync your Fitbit, the device is able to use that data to estimate the amount of time you spent in light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep the previous night.
