Fitbit Not Tracking Sleep Or Is Not Accurate Lets Fix It
Fitbits are a great option if you want an insight into your sleep habits.
All Fitbit trackers except the Fitbit Zip monitor your sleep patterns, detecting how much time you spend awake, restless, and asleep.
If you own a newer version of Fitbit with a heart rate sensor, you get an even more detailed sleep report, showing light, deep, and REM sleep time.
These Fitbits use your movement and heart rate information to estimate how long you spend in light, deep, and Rapid Eye Movement sleep each night.
But what if the device on your wrist is not tracking sleep properly? Or its inconsistent or even inaccurate?
Does your Fitbit say youve only had 2 hours of sleep when in reality, youve know youve had 8? Or perhaps your sleep stages or sleep score are not showing?

Short Naps Would Not Be Counted
Fitbit registers your sleep when you are an hour into your doze.
This means you have to lay still without any movements for an hour for the watch to note that you are asleep. Therefore, a quick nap that lasts for less than an hour will not be counted as sleep by the watch.
To track short naps, I would recommend manually activating sleep tracking.
What Does A Typical Sleep
A typical night’s sleep follows the pattern below, cycling through Stages 1 to REM every 90-110 minutes, with REM cycles getting longer each time.
Stage 1 – light sleep
We drift in and out of sleep, our eyes move slowly and our muscle activity slows down. We are easily woken up again.
Stage 2 – also fairly light sleep
Our bodies start preparing for deep sleep. Our eye movements, heart rate and brain waves slow down. Our body temperature drops.
Stage 3 – deep sleep
Deep sleep or slow wave sleep. Our heart rate and breathing rate are at their lowest, our muscles are relaxed and our brain waves slow down further.
For healthy adults, 15-20% of your sleep should be deep sleep.
We are difficult to rouse and can feel disorientated if woken up from deep sleep.
We dream. Technically REM sleep isn’t the only period of sleep in which we dream, but the vivid, hallucinogenic, often emotional, and bizarre experiences which seem to form a narrative come from REM sleep.
Our eyes are closed but dart rapidly from side to side. Our brain activity returns to a more wakeful state.
Our breathing becomes faster, irregular and shallow.
Our limbs may become paralysed to stop us acting out our dreams.
Interestingly, studies show that getting enough REM sleep helps us better read the social world around us. Insufficient REM sleep can, amongst other things, blunt our ability to discern changes in others’ facial expressions and, thus, make it harder for us to navigate social situations.

You might mainly use it for monitoring your heart rate and daily step count, but your Fitbit is also one of the best sleep trackers around. All Fitbits can track time spent asleep, restless, or awake, and , every Fitbit with a heart rate monitor can track how long you’re spending in each sleep stage .
The Fitbit Charge 4, Charge 5, Luxe, Sense, Versa 2, and Versa 3 can also detect changes in blood oxygen saturation overnight. Your Fitbit isn’t a medical device, and can’t be used to make a diagnosis, but if your SpO2 drops particularly low overnight then it’s worth having a conversation with your doctor, as it could be a sign of sleep apnea .

I appreciate your participation in the Forums and sharing that since you switched from Charge 2 to Versa 2, your sleep is not being tracked accurately. Thank you for letting me know that your watch tracks your steps and heart rate fine. There are several factors that can affect the sleep tracking. I recommend doing the following:
It is possible to correct the sleep record from your dashboard by following the steps from this help article: How do I change my sleep history?
1. I looked at the normal verse sensitive, but it seems my fitbit doesn’t have those options? It’s not in the settings of my sleep tracker to even change.
2. I have done resets on the device, just not a factory reset.
3. Already on my non-dominant hand.
4. It is one finger tightness. So a little wiggle room but not really moving much.

Analysis Of The Blood Oxygen Variation

Check Heart Rate Settings
Your Fitbit combines heart rate and movement data to develop a more accurate picture of your sleep cycle. So ensure your Fitbits heart rate sensor is enabled.

Where To See Your Readings
To see your sleep results, log in to the Fitbit app on your iOS or Android device and sync your Fitbit. The app that tracks your sleep is the same one you use to see your steps. You’ll see a brief rundown of your results in the sleep tile.
You need to have slept at least three hours for Sleep Stages to work. It also doesn’t work if you wear the tracker loose on your wrist or when it’s running low on battery power.
To see your readings, tap the sleep time number to go to the sleep dashboard. From there, you can see each stage of sleep represented in a graph form that breaks down how much time you spent in each sleep stage and how close you were to your overall sleep goal for the day.
Scroll down to see your sleep results for the day and your average amount of sleep for the week. Tap any sleep section to bring up an hour-by-hour explanation of how you slept and which sleep stage you were in at a given time. The 30-day average and benchmarks show how your sleep compares with other people your gender and age.

Snore Detection Reports On Fitbit
The place to find your detailed Fitbit snore reports is via the Sleep section on the premium tab on the Fitbit app.
Start by clicking on Sleep to select it and then you need to look at one of the sleep log entries related to the night when you had snoring detection active.
- Scroll down on the log and look for the section Snore & Noise
- The incident reports are under the Restoration section here.
- Tap View Snore & Noise report to see additional details.
The snore report under the Restoration section categorizes snoring activity into three broad categories.
Along with your snoring percentage, your Fitbit also assesses the noise level in your sleeping environment, providing you the decibels of noise as well as a categorization of how noisy that level is.
Fitbit categorizes the volume of your ambient sleeping environment and its overall noise level as:
- Very quiet
- Very loud
Your Fitbit detects snoring more accurately in quiet and very quiet sleeping environments vs. loud and very loud.

How To Improve Your Sleep Habits
If youre not impressed by your sleep habits and want to improve, the obvious applies. One of the best ways to improve this is by adopting a regular sleep schedule and having at least 7 hours every night. It is also advisable to avoid afternoon naps, exercise regularly, and have a relaxing bedtime routine. Additionally, Fitbit suggests that exercising earlier in the day has a positive effect on your sleep.

Digging Deeper Into Fitbits Sleep Tracking Features
Sign up for a Fitbit Premium subscription, and youll get access to a few more insights and recommendations regarding your slumber. If youre not getting to sleep at the same time every night, for example, you might see a popup alert suggesting that you try to build a routine.
Your sleep score should be more accurate with a Premium subscription too, because it includes more factorsthe level of your snoring being one of them . These extra factors, including time spent asleep, have more detailed breakdowns inside the app, as well as more information to help you interpret them.
If youve turned on snore and noise detection, tap the Snore Report link on any individual day to see what your Fitbit smartwatch microphone detected while you were snoozing. Youll get an overview of the noises you were making at night and at what time, as well as some context about what your results mean. The overall snoring and noise levels are rounded up as a summary at the top.
Adjust The Sensitivity Mode
If you are not a deep sleep person, you should change your Fitbit Versas sensitivity mode to normal. This way, slight movements in your sleep will not be considered sleep disturbances.

Studies have shown that it’s important to keep a regular sleep schedule, insofar as that’s possible. The Fitbit Versa Lite can help. It uses a combination of your sleep goal, recent sleep trends, and your morning wake-up time to recommend an ideal bedtime for you. You can set the Versa Lite to remind you when it’s time to turn in.
The Versa Lite and the Fitbit app offer insights about your sleep compared to other people of the same age and gender. You’ll also get relavant tips for getting a better night’s sleep and developing a bedtime routine.
While this feature may help your partner even more than it helps you, the Fitbit Versa Lite does have a silent alarm. You’ll be awakened gently with a vibration rather than an audible alarm.
Why Can Fitbit Track Sleeping
The ability of Fitbit trackers to track sleep patterns is down to the fact that its fitted with sensors called accelerometers. They help detect the wearers motion along with the direction and speed of the motion. When the tracker detects that you havent moved in over an hour, the algorithm assumes that you are asleep. This is often supported by the kind of movements you make while youre asleep such as rolling over. Your movements in the morning tell the tracker that you have woken up. This mechanism is not perfect and for this reason can falsely assume that youre asleep after you have stayed for too long without moving. When this happens, simply delete the sleep record from your dashboard.
Fitbit sleep tracking works differently for different models as explained below:
- Fitbit Ultra, One, Flex and Zip: Enter the time you spent asleep on the Fitbit website or in the app. Fitbit will use the accelerometer data to establish whether you were asleep, awake or restless during that time frame. This data is based on the movements of your wrist during the time you said you were asleep.
- Fitbit Surge, Charge HR, Charge, Force: These 4 models determine the beginning and end of your sleep automatically based on your movements for one hour. You can always enter the time manually if you feel autodetection is not accurate.

Fitbit Inspire 2 Review: Setup And Use
The Fitbit Inspire 2 is incredibly simple to set up. We’re talking minutes to go from unpacking it to placing it on your wrist and enjoying it tracking everything you could want. The wrist strap is a simple plastic band that doesn’t require you to measure it or do anything too complicated with setup undertaken via the Fitbit app. If you’ve previously used a Fitbit before, you can sign in with your existing account, choosing to sync a new device in the form of the Fitbit Inspire 2. It’s simple stuff and the kind of thing anyone can manage, even if they’re not particularly tech savvy.
If you’re new to Fitbit, all you need to do is enter a few key details like your age, weight, height and fitness aims, and Fitbit Inspire 2 adjusts things accordingly so it knows roughly what to expect of your heart rate and general performance throughout the day.
After that’s done, it’s all fairly hands-off if you want it to be. You’ll receive occasional notifications letting you know of how your steps are going throughout the day but the Fitbit Inspire 2 mostly blends in. Similarly, you can check in on the app but it’s not vital if you have a busy day. A 10-day battery life certainly helps here as you won’t have to worry about recharging it too often either.
How Does Fitbit Know I’m Sleeping
If you went to a doctor for a sleep study, your sleep stages would be measured by an electroencephalogram that pays attention to your brain activity. You’d also be hooked up to other machines that monitor your muscle movements.
While your Fitbit is not a replacement for going to see a sleep specialist, it detects some of the same things by monitoring your heart rate and your movements while you’re sleeping or attempting to sleep. Using those measurements, it makes reasonable guesses. For example, if your heart rate remains about the same and you don’t move for an hour, the chances are good you’re asleep.
Fitbit monitors your heart rate variability while you sleep, which helps it determine when you’re moving between levels of sleep. The ratings aren’t going to be as robust as those you get from a doctor, but if you’re looking for some basic information about yourself and your sleep patterns, it can do the trick.
