Understanding Sleep Tracking: How Does The Galaxy Watch Track Sleep
Smartwatches can tell how well you are sleeping by using a variety of different tools. Some of the most popular ones are:
- Movement and positioning: This is pretty self-explanatory. Vast movements indicate that you are awake while standing still after a certain amount of time means that you are going through light sleep
- Sound: Things like snoring and outside noises may be decremental to your sleep quality. Sleep trackers may use such info to calculate your final sleep score
- Heart rate: Our heart rate changes when we sleep and can also change depending on sleep quality. A sudden spike in heart rate, for example, may indicate that you just entered the REM stage or that maybe you are having a nightmare
- AI: The AI of the program can finally process all of the data that it gathers from your sleeping habits and determine how well you sleep in detail
Not to mention that the watch can also use information such as your daily sleeping time and waking up to determine further whether you are sleeping well or not.
Its worth noting that all the above methods of sleep tracking are general and not exclusive to Galaxy Watches.
Why Is This Blog About How Does Samsung Health Measure Sleep Important
As we have discussed, there are two options Samsung Health can measure sleep. This is through a wearable or your phone. The Samsung Health sleep tracker is mostly done automatically since it will just kick in by itself once you have put your device down as you go to sleep.
Therefore, there is no need to keep it in bed with you, instead, just put it wherever you normally put it. As we have mentioned, the app will start recording 30 minutes after you have gone to sleep. In contrast, wearable devices have a gyroscope and heart rate sensor to identify more accurately the stages present in your sleeping pattern.

Why Is The Galaxy Watch Sleep Tracking Accuracy So Bad
The Samsung Galaxy Watch relies a lot on movement to determine when you are sleeping and how you are sleeping.
The thing is that just because you are standing still doesnt mean that you are sleeping. Many people lay still on the bed to watch TV, Netflix, or listen to music/podcasts.
If the watch doesnt have available methods of accurately tracking biometrics such as heart rate, it may think that you are taking a nap. Not to mention people who move a lot in their sleep and AI accuracy. So, your mileage in terms of accuracy may vary.

Edit Sleep Time Target
Samsung Health automatically preconfigures your sleep time target based on your profile information such as age and gender. However, these targets may not accurately reflect your daily routine. If your work schedule requires you to work night shifts, for instance, having a sleep target of 11 PM to 6 AM may not be realistic.
If that’s the case, you’ll need to customize your sleep time target within Samsung Health, which can be accomplished by tapping on the Sleep tile, then tapping on the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner -and selecting “Set target.” From there, simply swipe on the time bars for both “Bedtime” and Wake-up time” to set your sleep target.

How Can I See Rem Time In My Sleep Results
Go into the Samsung Health app on the Galaxy Watch and then scroll/twist on down to heart rate. Tap on the three dot menu icon on the right and then on the gear icon to access settings. Choose the Always option and then go to bed to track your sleep. You should now see REM zones in your sleep stats.
Another benefit of changing this setting is that your heart rate will be measured throughout the day so you can view a useful chart showing how it changes throughout the day.

What About The Sleep Score
Its worth keeping in mind that the sleep score doesnt simply reflect how much you sleep. The overall quality of your sleep is just as important as the length.
For example, 8 hours of sleep with very little deep sleep and REM sleep may be lower than 7 hours with sufficient deep sleep and REM sleep scores.

Get A Better Nights Sleep
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 70 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep problems. If youre one of them, a smartwatch might be able to help you understand why. Many popular options offer sleep tracking features that keep an eye on troublesome sleep behaviors you might not be aware of.
The Apple Watch Series 3 and newer can, for example, detect how long you were asleep and track your breathing throughout the night. And thats just the tip of the iceberg.
Most of Garmins Forerunner smartwatches monitor your blood oxygen levels while sleeping, and your respiration, too. Itll even attempt to measure how much time you spent in different sleep phases light, deep or REM in order to give you a sleep score in the morning, plus some advice on how easy you should take it that day.
Fitbits were among the first fitness trackers out there to support sleep tracking and the companys smartwatches like the Fitbit Sense continue to carry that torch. The Sense features all of the same tracking tricks that Garmin watches do, but with one helpful addition: a smart wake mode that will wake you up to 30 minutes before your alarm if it thinks you arent sleeping deeply anymore.
Tips for getting the best sleep data:
No Rem Sleep Tracking
If you dont see any REM information and havent updated the latest operating system, REM tracking may turn off.
When REM is off, your watch measures your sleep stages through your movements only.
Turn on Record REM sleep by going through the sleep tracking screens settings menu
- On the sleep screen, swipe up or down and tap the Settings button.
- Turn on Record REM sleep.

How Can I Increase Battery Life To Four Days
The one major software differentiator between the Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch is the ability to have an always-on watch face. However, after nearly a month using the Galaxy Watch, I discovered that this is also the culprit that kills the battery life the fastest and if you enable the watch face to be on all the time then you are likely to get about half of the battery life that Samsung advertises.
If you want a chance at four or more days of battery life, then go to Settings> Watch faces and toggle off the Watch always on option. You can still keep the gesture enabled to turn on the watch face so if you lift your wrist and rotate to look at the screen then you should see the watch face. I prefer having the watch face always on, but until Samsung improves the battery life with this enabled I have it turned off.
If you really want to go crazy and see a week to a month of battery life, battery settings are available for power saving and watch only modes too.
Sleep Tracking / Galaxy Watch Active 2
I configured Sleep as Android and my Galaxy Watch Active 2 to track my sleep and trigger an input boolean in Home Assistant when Im sleeping via Tasker. Didnt realize I had to manually tell the watch Im sleeping, so I have to remember to do this for automations to work correctly. The watch does automatically track and report to the Samsung Health app when Im sleeping , but doesnt seem like theres a way to take this info into Tasker to trigger automations. Has anyone found a good workaround for this?
Hi mhendu, Im looking for the same solution.Did you have any success?
sleep as android has its own auto sleep detection featureyou also dont need to use tasker as a crutch anymoresleep as android has MQTT and webhook support so you can send the events directly to HA.

Galaxy Watch Sleep Tracking Now Has Dedicated Toggle For Rem Sleep
The Galaxy Watch also has a separate toggle for enabling or disabling REM sleep recording with the latest update. Continuous heart rate monitoring will probably give you a better idea of how much REM sleep youre getting each night, because the heart beats faster during REM sleep. But having heart rate monitoring set to frequent will mean reduced battery usage overnight, even though it might be at the expense of the accuracy of REM sleep tracking.
To access the REM sleep recording toggle, scroll to and tap the sleep tracking widget on the watch, then tap the three-dot button on the right and tap the Settings option. REM sleep tracking will be enabled by default once the Galaxy Watch update is installed, but you can disable it using the toggle if you wish.
