How Do Wearables Help With Sleep Apnea Studies And Sleep Centers

Apple Watch Series 4 Sleep App is Helpful For Seizure Tracking

Clinicians can accurately estimate sleep behavior in a sleep center for up to 42 minutes by using smartphones that analyze light, noise, and acceleration, according to a 2013 paper published at the 7th International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare. Manufacturers will continue to add external sensors to consumer wearables that allow them to assess other signals.

An oximetry probe that measures the oxygen saturation of the wearers blood is one of the most promising types of new sleep apnea technology. Continuous monitoring of oxygen saturation combined with pulse rate during sleep provides excellent validation results for this application. However, it also increases the demands of a wearable with respect to battery power, graphics control and signal processing.

The efficacy of long-term oximetry has already been evaluated for monitoring patients with Sleep Apnea. A 2013 study published at the 13th IEEE International Conference on BioInformatics and BioEngineering combined external oximetry with a built-in microphone to measure respiratory effort and a built-in accelerometer to measure movements. The sensitivity of this technique in classifying obstructive Sleep Apnea was 100 percent with a sensitivity of 85.7 percent.

Apples Sleep app also allows you to track sleep from your iPhone, which is based around the bedtime schedule that you will have to create when you set up the Sleep app. This is synchronous: whether you set it up on the Apple Watch or iPhone first, it should automatically sync with the other device and activate Sleep during your scheduled bedtime.

To make sure your Apple Watch is recording sleep, look for the Sleep app on your home screen . From there you can enable tracking sleep with the Apple Watch that will forward that data to the iOS Apple Health app. Its here where you can also enable charging reminders and automatically turn on the Do Not Disturb mode at night though if you want to switch it on manually, look for the new Bedtime button on your control center.

There’s a related question: Am I getting good sleep? Well, I have an Apple Watch, and it can track my steps, heart rate, time spent standing and all that — so maybe I’ll just start wearing it to bed and get some answers.

You know the punchline: The Apple Watch still doesn’t do sleep-tracking, at least not out of the box. But there are many third-party apps that can fill in this gap, keeping tabs on how long you sleep and how well.

      Apple Watch Sleep Tracking Data

Most fitness trackers, such as those from Fitbit, Garmin, and the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, give you highly detailed data about the amount of time youre in REM sleep, light sleep, or are tossing around in bed. I, for one, dont care what stage of sleep Im in, or how much deep sleep I getI just want to know if Ive slept wellbut I respect not everyone feels that way.

The Galaxy Watch 3, and other fitness trackers Ive tested, offer more actionable insight, which someone with consistent sleep troubles might need. For me, going to bed at the same time every night has been enough of an adjustment to regulate my hours of rest. For others, something like Fitbit Premium, which offers personalized guidance on how they can sleep better and have more energy, might be a better choice.

Can Wearables Detect Sleep Apnea Apple Fitbit & Garmin Explained

How to add automatic sleep tracking to your Apple Watch ...

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services defines Sleep Apnea as a disorder characterized by disruptions in breathing such as pauses or periods of shallow breathing while sleeping. These disruptions may last for as long as a few minutes and can occur many times, typically after loud snoring. People with Sleep Apnea often feel sleepy or tired during the day, and it may also cause hyperactivity in children. Wearables are being used as a sleep tracker with increasing frequency.

The diagnosis and monitoring of Sleep Apnea requires cost-effective wireless technologies, especially in areas where doctors and patients are geographically separated. These technologies can also allow researchers to investigate the causes of Sleep Apnea to develop better treatments. Wearable devices are an unobtrusive method for obtaining the necessary data with minimal effect on the patient.

Continuous positive airway pressure is the most common treatment for moderate to severe Sleep Apnea. This technique uses pressurized air to keep the patients airway open, typically by wearing a facial mask connected to a machine. CPAP is effective in improving the outcome of Sleep Apnea, but patient compliance can be a limiting factor due to the discomfort of long-term use.

        This Is All Nothing New

Sleep tracking on this level is nothing new for the Apple Watch. I’ve been tracking my sleep every night since November, when I bought my Apple Watch Series 4 refurb. I haven’t used an Apple-issued app, but I have been using AutoSleep, a four dollar app on the App Store.

Also: Apple Watch: New or refurbished? Why I’m glad I bought a used Series 4

AutoSleep works great. It has a Watch app that you set and forget. The app on the watch does the sleep tracking and reports back to a far more comprehensive app on the iPhone. AutoSleep on the iPhone captures a ton of metrics, and provides you with lots of ways of slicing and dicing the data.

I, personally, look at the total sleep time after I’ve had coffee in the morning. If I’ve had enough sleep , I don’t take a nap during the day. But if I got less than four hours of sleep overnight, I try to allocate time for a power nap sometime in the middle of the day.

The Apple Watch Is Due For A Battery Boost

Another edge wearable alternatives from Samsung or Fitbit hold over the Apple Watch as it pertains to sleep tracking is battery life. Until recently, I charged my Apple Watch overnight, every night, as I do my iPhone. This week Ive adjusted to juicing it up a bit before bed, and again in the morning, when the new Good Morning interface lets me know my watchs battery status.

But watching the Galaxy Watch 3 last two days, and some fitness trackers lasting a week, now more than ever I think the Apple Watch needs a better battery life.

If Apple Watch 6 rumors and leaks prove true, then the next-generation watch should get this upgrade, which, IMHO, will make Apple Watch sleep tracking all the more appealing. My competitive nature is sold on the routine needed to meet my sleep goals, so is too much to ask for hardware to match?

        What Is A Wearable

A wearable device, or wearable, is an electronic device with a micro-controller that can be worn directly on the body or incorporated into clothing. They often have internet connectivity, making them part of the Internet of Things . The cost of wearable technology dropped to a level that would allow widespread adoption by 2009, and sales began growing rapidly by 2013.

Smart watches and activity trackers are some of the best-known examples of wearables in consumer electronics, although its uses are expanding rapidly as the technology develops. Professional athletes are also using wearables to obtain real-time monitoring and feedback on physical functions such as movements and energy expenditure. Other current applications for wearables are found in navigations systems, advanced textiles, and healthcare, especially elder care.

Wearables can collect biometric data to provide valuable information on the heart, brain, and muscles. They also have great potential for generating big data, so researchers are shifting their focus to the development of algorithms that will provide insight into the collected data. Neural networks and statistical classification are currently the most promising data mining techniques for the data gathered by wearables.

What Data Does The Apple Watch Sleep Tracking App Collect

AutoSleep | Sleep Tracking with Apple Watch!

On the watch, you can see your sleep schedule, most recent data and a summary of your sleep consistency over the past 14 days.

You can see more data on the Apple Health iOS app. When you open it up and head for the Sleep section, you can also see the average time spent in bed and time spent asleep over a month. You can also see a series of highlights that range from average sleep over seven days as well as heart rate during sleep.

The importance of seeing that heart rate information during this time is that it can give you a sense of how your body recovers from the day and can also be a sign of whether youre in a good state of health. Heart rate during sleep can vary from 40-100bpm, and can be influenced by a range of things like exercise or drinking.

        Best Health Apps By Far

Autosleep and Healthwatch are simply incredible apps and a must for anyone interested in their health. I am a physician and a bit obsessed with data. Ive tried a dozen health tracking devices and even more apps and these two, by far, are the most insightful and well designed apps for the iPhone and Apple Watch. Ive spent hours over the last couple months reviewing the various trends and graphical analytics these apps offer for immediate and long term feedback on my sleep hygiene and heart health. My only wish is that the developer make more apps to track other aspects of health and wellness . These two apps pack so much analysis into a concise and easy to read manner, I wish the other wellness aspects that I track could offer as much insight. While those would require ground-up brand new apps, one thing which could possibly be incorporated into the HeartWatch app would be the ECG data. Even though its only one lead, tracking QTc and PR intervals should be doable. Just a thought for future iterations. Anyway, these apps are an incredible deal and offer way more for far less than anything else Ive found on the App Store. Keep up the good work.

How Can I Change My Sleep Goal

If you’ve realized you under or overestimated what sleep you need, it makes sense to adjust your sleep goal. Here’s where to look.

        1. On your iPhone, open the Health app and tap Sleep.

        2. Tap Full Schedule & Options.

        3. Tap Sleep Goal and adjust it to the length of time you now need.

You can also change your schedule so that your Apple Watch automatically adjusts depending on the day of the week. Want to have a lie-in on a Saturday? Tweak the times for Saturday so you can sleep longer than on a Monday morning.
