A typical sleep progression begins with two stages of light sleep moving into a deep sleep, followed by rapid-eye-movement sleep in which dreams and memories form. Healthy adults will cycle through non-REM sleep and REM sleep multiple times a night.
Each sleep stage has specific brain wave, muscle and eye activity that allows researchers to detect when a person has entered each stage of sleep and to measure for how long they are in each stage. The Fitbit Inspire 2 is Fitbit’s more budget-friendly offering amongst its wide selection of trackers and smartwatches. As one of the best sleep trackers, it stands out thanks to being so lightweight and comfortable to wear and – of course – being able to track your sleeping patterns effectively too.
It’s a little basic in places, lacking GPS and Fitbit Pay support. Also, we’re not huge fans of its tiny 1.4-inch OLED display but as a simple way to track the basics and help you monitor your stress levels too, it’s refreshingly straightforward. That’s further helped by its 10-day battery life which means you won’t have to think too hard about maintaining it either.
While the best Fitbit for everyone remains the now-ageing Fitbit Versa 3 if you can stretch that far or the Fitbit Charge 4, the Fitbit Inspire 2 is still a good bet if money is tight or you simply don’t want to invest in anything too feature-rich. Especially if you find a cheap Fitbit deal on it.

Feeling fit isn’t all about steps and calorie burn. A good night’s sleep plays a critical role in your health and overall well being.
That’s why Fitbit is adding new features to its trackers that provide more insight on your sleeping habits and guidance on how to improve them.
The health and wellness company on Monday announced two new sleeping tools that will be coming to its existing products.
The first, Sleep Stages, will utilize the optical heart-rate sensor to estimate how long you spend in light, deep and REM sleep cycles, as well as how frequently you wake up in the middle of the night. Sleep Stages will be available on the Fitbit Charge 2, Blaze and the new Alta HR.
Sleep Insights shines a light on your sleeping patterns.
The second tool, known as Sleep Insights, will be available to all Fitbit trackers that are capable of tracking sleep. That includes the Fitbit One, Flex 2, Alta, Alta HR, Charge 2, Blaze and Surge, along with older trackers like the original Flex, Charge and Charge HR.
Sleep Stages and Sleep Insights will be available globally to Fitbit users in the coming weeks.

How To Select And Start A Specific Exercise On Your Fitbit Charge 2
Push the button on the left of your Fitbit Charge 2 until you get to the exercise option, which will be Run by default unless you change it. Tap below the display to flick through the various exercises, which include run, weights, treadmill, workout, elliptical, bike and interval workout, by default.
Push and hold the button on the left of the display to start tagging an exercise, and again to finish it. A summary will then appear in the weekly exercise section of the Dashboard.

- If you wear your Fitbit too loose. Wearing it too loose or in a position where it can’t get accurate heart-rate data will cause you to lose data. The company recommends wearing it 2-3 finger widths height on your wrist. It should feel secure but not tight.
- If you didn’t sleep long enough. You must sleep at least 3 hours to get accurate data.
- If you’re Fitbit’s battery is low.
- If you used the Begin Sleep Now option. You don’t need to use this option. Instead you should just wear the device to bed.

Some exercises allow you to set a distance, calories or time goal. Swipe from top to bottom from the main home screen > select Exercise > swipe down to the exercise you want to do and tap on it. If the Set Goal feature is available it will be below the start option. Tap on Set Goal and select which goal you want. This feature is not available on the Inspire.

Select the metric you want to see more information on from the Today tab, such as steps. This will bring up a summary in a list format of your entire history by day of that particular metric.
The graph at the top presets a weekly summary but a further tap on any of the days listed will give you an hourly summary for that day in a graph. You can also hold down on a particular hour to see the information in number format for 15-minute intervals.

Setting A Sleep Schedule And Reminders To Stick To It
One of the things I really liked during the month is the option to set a sleep goal / schedule and then get reminders to stick to it.
In the App settings, you can input your target sleep schedule. Since I’m a bit of a night owl, I went with bedtime at 12:30 a.m. and wake up at 8:30 a.m.
You can limit the days for your schedule if you like, but I know I personally benefit from a regular 7 day a week pattern.
Following that, you can ask for a reminder to help you wind down for sleep, which I set an hour before at 11:30 p.m.
Every night I then received both a notification on my phone and a vibrating reminder on my wrist to encourage me to stick to that bedtime. And in theory, start winding down by putting aside any late night work, and reading a book or relaxing rather than watching the next episode of my favorite TV series.
I found this a very helpful tool, and one which I can see actually benefiting people. And to help motivate you even more, if you manage to hit your target you’ll get a green star on the App the next morning.

Connect Bluetooth Headphones To Your Fitbit Versa
To listen to phone-free music you’ll need to connect headphones to your Versa. On the watch, head into Settings > Bluetooth and you can connect to a new device. Put the headphones in pairing mode and they will appear on your Versa. Select the headphones to pair them with Versa and you’re done. This isn’t an option on the Versa Lite.
How To See Your Notifications On The Fitbit Blaze
An upward swipe from the bottom of the home clock display will pull up your notifications, which can be deleted by swiping right on the notification itself. Fitbit Inspire 2 Review: Design And Build Quality
Subtle to wear, the Fitbit Inspire 2 is very comfortable which is useful when you’re embarking on tracking your sleep. Designed like a smallish wrist strap rather than a watch, it’s thin and lightweight so you’ll soon forget you’re wearing it. We had the desert rose variety which is the brightest option out of the three but it still blends in with what you’re wearing quite well.
The build quality feels reasonably competent for the price too. There aren’t really any parts you’ll worry about knocking and water resistance up to 50m means you won’t need to worry about taking it off for a bath or shower either. This is a device designed to be worn long term.
Where things falter is the Fitbit Inspire 2’s 1.4-inch backlit OLED display. It’s fine and can show some limited information but it’s pretty basic. Receiving notifications can be a bit limited here with chunky bezels further limiting what you can see. It’s not the greatest in bright lights either and it’s all pretty rudimentary. Still, it does the job.
On either side of the display are capacitive buttons which are subtle but sometimes a little inaccurate to the touch. In conjunction with them, you can swipe up or down the display to view different stats such as how many steps you’ve taken or how many active zone minutes you’ve achieved so far today, as well as your sleep score.
Fitbit Inspire 2 Review: Alternatives To Consider
There’s no shortage of the best fitness trackers to choose from out there which is why we’re fairly convinced that the Fitbit Inspire 2 is best as a sleep tracker instead. That’s thanks to how comfy it is but there are alternatives.
The Fitbit Charge 4 is more expensive but offers GPS and the same sleep tracking tools you’ll see on the Fitbit Inspire 2. It’s a similar weight too so you won’t have to worry about any disruption while snoozing.
Alternatively, a budget offering like the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 can be a good option if you want to spend even less but it’s far from as comfortable as the Fitbit Inspire 2. Still, it’s also about a quarter of the price at only about £20. It still has a heart rate tracker too so it’s reasonably accurate while you sleep.
There’s also the option of the potential overkill purchase – the Apple Watch Series 6. Far more expensive than anything else mentioned here, it’s worth it if you’ll use it. With a brighter always-on display than previous Apple Watches, it looks gorgeous. It also has excellent app support so you can try a lot of different health and fitness options. An array of health sensors including a blood oxygen monitor and ECG facility further provides some peace of mind. Expect to pay for the privilege though.

Ok, so your Fitbit might not meet the gold standard of using an electroencephalogram in a lab setting. Professional sleep studies detect your brain activity, eye movement, and muscle activity in a controlled environment.
What Fitbit does is estimate the amount of time you’re spending in each sleep stage by using a combination of your movement and your heart-rate patterns. Your tracker assumes you’re asleep if you haven’t moved in one hour. The device cross-references that with other data – movements that indicate sleeping such as rolling over – to confirm that you are asleep.
Your Fitbit then tracks your heart-rate variability – the beat-to-beat changes in your heart-rate – that fluctuate when you move between the different sleep stages. When you wake up and sync your Fitbit, the device is able to use that data to estimate the amount of time you spent in light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep the previous night.
