Polysomnogram or a sleep study is an electronic test that transmits and records your brain waves, heart rate, breathing, and blood oxygen level while you sleep. The test also records several physical activities like the movement of your legs and eyes while you sleep.
During the test, multiple sensors are attached to the persons body while he or she is sleeping. The test serves as a diagnostic tool in sleep medicine. The recordings serve as data that a qualified sleep specialist investigates and analyzes to find out if you have a sleep disorder .

Ruling Out More Serious Causes
Snoring could indicate sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder where your breathing is briefly interrupted many times each night. Normal snoring doesnt interfere with the quality of your sleep as much as sleep apnea, so if youre suffering from extreme fatigue and sleepiness during the day, it could be an indication of sleep apnea or another sleep-related breathing problem. Call your doctor if you or your sleep partner have noticed any of the following red flags:
- You snore loudly and heavily and are tired during the day.
- You stop breathing, gasp, or choke during sleep.

Do Men Snore More Than Women
There are definite gender distinctions when it comes to those sleep-disrupting sounds. Yes, men snore more than women.
There exist anatomical differences in the bodies of both women and men that cause men to take the lead. 4 out of every 10 men snore, in comparison to roughly 3 out of 10 women.
Men are born with air channels that are narrower than womensand this causes unpleasant noise during night time. The narrower the air passage, the harder it is for the oxygen to flow during the normal breathing activity. Also, when air is forced through a narrow opening, the tissues surrounding it vibrate aggressively and snoring becomes louder as a result.
Statistically, men consume alcohol more often than females do they are also more likely to consume it in excess. The tendency to smoke is more in men as compared to women, leaving them vulnerable to snoring as a side effect.

Best Mattress Type For A Side Sleeper
You may already have a preference for a kind of mattress whether its one thats soft or firm. When it comes to side sleeping, though, a mattress that falls somewhere in between these two spectrums works best.
A soft, cushiony mattress doesnt offer very much joint support. While you may find the softness comfortable on your shoulders and knees at the start of the night, you can wake up feeling achy in the morning. The general health recommendations are for people to get 7-7.5 hours of sleep per night, and this is a good rule of thumb for people who snore as well.

Change Your Partners Position
For some people, sleeping in the supine position that is, lying on their backs makes snoring worse. Research bears this out.
Although its become a cliché to elbow your snoring partner in the ribs so theyll roll over onto their stomachs and stop snoring, sometimes changing position is truly all it takes.
Positional therapy is a treatment option specifically designed to help snorers avoid lying on their backs. There are several options you could try.
- Snore-reducing trainer. Imagine a padded weight belt that you sleep in. Thats basically the premise behind the trainer. It makes it hard for the wearer to sleep on their back, so they must roll over onto their side, where they may be less likely to snore.
- A tennis ball. In the middle of the night, when youre eager to try anything, slip a tennis ball underneath your partners back, which will make it uncomfortable for them to lie on their back.
- Head-positioning pillow. A head-positioning pillow, also sometimes called an anti-snore pillow, helps to properly align the users neck so theyre less likely to snore. You can order one online or pick one up at a local store, depending on how desperate you are for a good nights sleep again. A

If youre obese or out of shape, this can exacerbate the problem of snoring. Why? Overeating and/or lack of exercise can lead to an increase in fat around the throat. This extra fat can cause the airway to be more narrow and affect normal breathing by creating an obstruction in the oropharynx during sleep.
In this case, snoring can be even more pronounced. This particular cause is notably higher in men than women because men tend to put on weight in their neck more than women.
When you lay on your back, the fatty tissue adds pressure onto the airway, blocking it off. Maybe this is why rolling over can sometimes help. The good news is exercising, losing weight and treating obesity can be all it takes to end your snoring, and that will create better overall health too.
Snoring and excessive weight can affect children as well. A study published in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health revealed that snoring and sleep apnea were significantly higher in obese children.
I know that the last thing women want to hear is yet another problem that menopause symptoms cause, but as women get older, its common that their muscle tone diminishes and causes them to put on some weight. By the time women have reached the age of approximately 70, theyre just as likely to be snorers as men of the same age. How To Treat Snoring
You may be able to reduce your snoring by making certain lifestyle changes. These include losing weight, avoiding alcohol and sedative medications at night, and always sleeping on your back. Since nasal congestion can cause breathing, treating this with decongestants or corticosteroid sprays may be effective if your doctor approves them.
People who see their doctor about snoring may be evaluated for sleep apnea. The examination may include an examination of the nose and mouth to check for a physical obstruction, as well as other warning signs such as nasal polyps, a high or narrow arched palate, a displaced jaw, or enlarged tonsils or adenoids.
Anti-snoring mouthguards have proven effective for some people. Tongue-retaining devices form a seal around the tongue and hold it in place. Sleep In A Little Tonight
When you go to bed tonight, you might be tempted to sleep longer than normal. Moderation, again, is the key here.
Sleeping in after a bad night’s sleep is OK, but you’re trying to get your sleep schedule back on track. Sleeping in too long can make that harder, because it shifts your normal sleep pattern.
If you sleep in, limit it to no more than two extra hours, Durmer says. If you normally get seven hours of sleep at night, aim for nine.
Going to bed too early can also disturb sleep patterns, says Walsleben. If you’re exhausted and want to hit the sack, try to wait until it’s about an hour before normal bedtime.
No matter how tired you feel, there’s no reason to sleep all day, since the most recovery sleep time you can get is 10 hours, Durmer says.
If you’re exhausted but still having trouble falling asleep, count backwards from 300 in multiples of three, Breus says. Doing math problems makes it hard to think about anything else and keep your eyes open, he says.
