Apple Health Guide: The Powerful Fitness App Explained

Apple Health is a place where you can store and track all of your health and fitness data in one place.

Whether that’s steps, cycling, runs or even more serious health data like blood pressure and glucose levels, Apple Health can draw data from trackers, smartwatches, scales and other devices and put them in one place.

After its launch in 2014, it has evolved to become somewhere where even more of that data can live and be pulled in from devices like the Apple Watch, the iPhone, sleep monitors or third party apps like Strava. It’s more useful than it has ever been.

Whether you’re just getting to know Apple Health for the first time or looking for ways to get more out of the software, we break down how it works, what it can track and much more.

What About Using A Fitbit Apple Watch Or Other Wrist Wearable

If you already use a wearable with sleep-tracking capabilities, you may be perfectly happy sticking with what you have rather than buying a separate app to use on your phone. Wearables track your sleep automaticallyno setup before bed. In 2018, we tested the sleep-tracking features on a Fitbit tracker, a Garmin tracker, and an Apple Watch against four apps. At the time, the wearables were frequently off compared with the apps, usually over-reporting sleep, though they did give an accurate picture of sleep trends over time. This is something youll see as long as you consistently use the same device over the long term.

The biggest advantage of sleep-tracking phone apps over wearables lies in the extra features, such as smart alarms and sounds that help you fall asleep. Wearables can buzz you awake, which is a plus if you sleep with a partner who has a different schedule, and they can nudge you to get ready for bed just as they nudge you to get up and move during the day. Theyre great for people who prefer not to bring a phone into the bedroom, and they can be helpful in determining how hard you should work out the next day based on your sleep.

How The Apple Watch Tracks Sleep

Apple Watch chief Kevin Lynch explains the company’s sleep approach in a conversation with CNET.

Sleep tracking on WatchOS 7 is overdue, and it’s starting with bedtime guidance.

It’s been almost five years since I first had a sleep study done at home. I put wires all over my face, wore a pulse oximeter on my finger and confirmed I had sleep apnea. I’ve used a CPAP machine ever since, and I’ve been interested in understanding how well I sleep and how to improve my rest. I’ve tried tons of watches, bed sensors and apps. Of all the smartwatches I’ve tried, the Apple Watch was conspicuously the only one that seemed to lack its own onboard sleep tracking.

While sleep tracking was possible using other Apple Watch apps, Apple never entered the space formally, despite purchasing sleep-tech company Beddit in 2017. That’s changed with WatchOS 7, unveiled last week at Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. It adds sleep tracking as an onboard feature, but you might be surprised at what sleep tracking on Apple’s watch does and doesn’t do.;

Apple’s Wind Down feature on the iOS 14 is part of the Apple Watch’s sleep experience, too.

Sync Sleep Analysis Data With Apple Health

As you can probably tell from some of the screenshots above, you can see “Sleep Analysis” data in the “Bedtime” tab in the Clock app. The data here shows you how long you slept, based on your bedtime and wake times set, but it knows when you’re using your iPhone. So if you’re using your iPhone after your bedtime, it won’t count that as sleep time. If you snooze the alarm in the morning, it will count that as more bedtime in the details.

How Can You Make Sure Your Apple Watch Is Tracking Sleep

Apples Sleep app also allows you to track sleep from your iPhone, which is based around the bedtime schedule that you will have to create when you set up the Sleep app. This is synchronous: whether you set it up on the Apple Watch or iPhone first, it should automatically sync with the other device and activate Sleep during your scheduled bedtime.

To make sure your Apple Watch is recording sleep, look for the Sleep app on your home screen . From there you can enable tracking sleep with the Apple Watch that will forward that data to the iOS Apple Health app. Its here where you can also enable charging reminders and automatically turn on the Do Not Disturb mode at night though if you want to switch it on manually, look for the new Bedtime button on your control center.

The Autosleep Tracker App

How-to: Track & Analyze Your Sleep with Apple Watch

The AutoSleep;Tracker app tracks your sleep in two ways. If you wear your Apple Watch to bed, the app automatically calculates your sleep; if you dont, the app calculates your sleep based on the time you didnt wear the device, and when you first access your iPhone the following morning.

The initial setup process asks if you wear an Apple Watch to bedjust tap Yes or No.

To change this setting later in the AutoSleep app, tap Settings in the bottom-right corner.

Before you use AutoSleep, youll want to configure it here, as well. To do so, tap Settings and, on the following screen, scroll down to the Configure section and tap Wizard.

Here, you see two toggles: I Wear My Watch to Bed and Want to Track Sleep Quality and If I Dont Wear My Watch to Bed I Want to Track My Sleep Based on the Time the Watch Was Not Worn.

You already set the first option in the initial setup process, but you can change it here. If you dont wear your Watch to bed, enable the other toggle, and the app will track your sleep based on the time youre not wearing your Watch.

Tap OK to continue.

On the next screen, you can set a night hour, which is the hour before you close your eyes for the night. It only offers one-hour increments between 5 p.m. and 12 a.m. The idea is to help you keep a positive sleep bank and force yourself to stick with a consistent sleep schedule.

Tap OK to continue.

Tap OK to continue.

Tap OK to complete the wizard.

    Flaws But Not Dealbreakers

    As of February 2021, SleepScore works only on specific phones. It doesnt work with the iPhone 5, 5s, and SE but is compatible with any iPhone with iOS software 10.3.3 or higher . As for Android phones, it works with the Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S8, S8+, S9, S9+, Note 8, and Note 9, as well as the Google Pixel 2 XL.

    When we asked the company about this limitation, the representative explained that because the app is dependent on a phones speaker and microphone, the company tests the app on each specific phone model for accuracy before supporting that phone. SleepScore says that if youre using an unsupported Android model, you will still be able to track your sleep using that device, but the SleepScore app features and functionality will vary. We also wonder whether this failure to update may open up any security issues on non-compatible phones. To be safe, we think its best for those with incompatible phones to skip SleepScore and try our also-great pick, Sleep Cycle, instead. Android users who dont mind a wonky interface could try Sleep as Android, which contains cool features but is difficult to navigate.

    We also wished that the app could track snoring by itself, like Sleep Cycle, Pillow, and Sleep as Android can. However, SleepScore Labs does make a companion app to track snoring called Do I Snore or Grind?, which based on our limited testing seemed more sensitive, and possibly more accurate.

    How to Track Your Sleep Activity in Apple

    Just note that for some apps, Health only accepts data for bedtime, wake up time and nighttime wake-ups. If you use an app that doesn’t integrate entirely, you’ll just have to check both Health and your third-party app to see all of your data.

    While sleep tracking apps may be more affordable and easier to use, a more equipped and fine-tuned device like Beddit is worth the investment if you need to track sleep for more than just for funsies.

    What About Battery Life

    Before you start tracking your sleep with Apple Watch, youll need to make a plan for when youll charge your watch. There are two primary options here: before bed or after you wake up in the morning. One key change for me has been placing an extra Apple Watch charger at my desk rather than on my nightstand.

    For me, its much easier to charge before bed every night. I wake up and workout first most mornings, so I have to make sure my Apple Watch has enough battery for workout tracking. If I put my Apple Watch on the charger at around 8 p.m., after Ive already reached my stand goal for that day, it usually has a full charge by the time I head to bed at 9:30 p.m. And when I wake up in the morning, I almost always have more than 90% battery left more than enough to make it through the day.

    Plus, on the days when I need a mid-day recharge, having the extra Apple Watch charger on my desk makes that a lot easier.

    This works perfectly for me, but your routine is probably different than mine. The key is to come up with a plan that you can replicate every day. Whether thats charging in the morning or at night, or a combination of both, its a lot easier than you might think to change your Apple Watch charging habits.

    Of course, there is also always the option of repurposing an old Apple Watch as your dedicated sleep watch. 9to5Macs Zac Hall previously explained how to do that. You could also pick up a used or refurbished older Apple Watch model to do this.

    How To Edit Apple Watch Alarm Sounds & Haptics

    We all have individual preferences on the best ways to wake up. Your Apple Watch offers haptics, a unique kinetic way of communicating with you through vibrations. These can be set to different intensities and rhythms based on your preference.

  • Open the Health app on your iPhone.;
  • Your changes will save automatically.
  • Tap;Sounds & Haptics;and then Back;to keep editing your settings.;
  • Next, you can drag the volume slider to change the loudness of the alarm and the intensity of the vibrations.;
  • You can also tap the;Snooze toggle;if you want the option to snooze your Apple Watch alarm.;
  • Tap Done to save your changes.
  • Once this is set up, the alarm will go off on your Apple Watch if you wear it to bed, or on your iPhone if you’re not wearing your watch.

    Pro Tip: If your schedule changes unexpectedly, you can always change your alarm for just the upcoming day. Open the Clock app and tap Change under Sleep | Wake Up. Once you toggle off the alarm, you’ll be asked if you want to change the alarm schedule altogether, or just for that day.

    Invest In A Fitness Tracker

    As I mentioned earlier, Apple Watch doesnt come with Sleep tracking, but it’s expected to get the function in the upcoming update. Meanwhile, you can always use third-party wearable from the likes of Fitbit and Xiaomi to track fitness activities such as steps, sleep, and more.

    During my testing, I used the AmazFit smartwatch from Xiaomi and set up the process using the Mi Fit app on the App Store.

    You can create an account and let the app do the counting for you. During setup, you need to allow Mi Fit to get the data from the Apple Health and sync back to fitness data to the default app.

    How Does Apple Health Track Sleep

    To track sleep on Apple Health, you need to rely on third party apps and devices to make that happen. So, in the example above, sleep data is pulled through from Garmin Connect while using a Fenix 6 to track sleep activity.

    That information can be found in the Sleep Analysis tab in the Summary section of the Apple Health app. There are a host of sleep analysis apps like Sleep++ and Sleep Cycle that can help enhance those sleep insights.

    If you want to know what sources are pushing sleep data to Apple Health:

    • Go to Summary, then Favourites and then select Show All Health Data
    • Look for Sleep Analysis and scroll down to find Data Source and Access
    • You’ll be able to see a list of data sources that are pushing data to Apple Health
    • If there are multiple sources, Apple will select one to prioritise for data displayed
