Wind Down is the integral benefit of Apple Watch sleep tracking. Ive never known what to do with myself in that weird period between finishing an episode of Ozark and remembering my evening skincare regime. 

My iPhone makes that half-hour a little more intentional by initiating a series of pre-selected shortcuts during my Wind Down window. It launches Spotify so I can turn on some relaxing music and opens up my calendar so I can wrap up my day by knowing whats on tap for tomorrow. I added a shortcut for Amazon Alexa so I can make adjustments to my Philips Hue lights before bed, too. 

You can completely skip this element of Apple Watch sleep tracking, but I found it plays nicely with the notion of routine Apple seeks to achieve.

The built-in tracker gets the job done, but it doesnt have all the bells and whistles needed to fully track and record every aspect of your sleep. For that reason, you might still want to try a third-party sleep-tracking app to get a more complete picture of your sleep patterns.

Worried about battery power? Don’t be. Your Apple Watch won’t run out of battery in the middle of the night if you give it a power boost before bed. Connect it to the charger for an hour or two before sleep, and it should last the entire night.

I think its time we address a serious question. Where is the sleep tracker on our Apple Watch? The latest Apple Watch is set to launch in September of this year. It is the Series 6 and is rumored to come through with much faster performance and even better water resistance.

And, of course, yes, your Apple Watch, regardless of model and version, is also capable of keeping an eye on your sleeping patterns.

According to the CDC, there are 50 to 70 million US adults that suffer from some or other sleep disorder. People experiencing sleep insufficiency are more likely to suffer from other chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.

That being said, we must have control over our sleeping habits. In this collection, Ill be sharing with you some of my favorite Apple Watch apps that I use to track my sleep.

Does The Apple Watch Have Enough Battery To Track Sleep

Battery life has been pointed to as a reason why Apple might have been reluctant to offer its own sleep tracking app in the past. Apple still states an 18 hour battery life for its smartwatch, which hasnt changed since the first Watch. Any battery improvements have been canceled out by features like the Apple Watch 5s always-on screen.

To make sure you have enough battery to track sleep through the night, Apple requires your watch to be charged to at least 30% to enable it. 

If you dont, the Watch will prompt you to charge before going to bed. When its got enough juice, your phone will alert you that its ready to join you in bed. In our time we found that sleep tracking sucked up around 20% battery on average, so its definitely going to impact how much battery youre left with in the morning.

The Apple Watchs New Sleep Tracking Changed How I Think About Sleep

When the Apple Watch was new, Apple decided to market it as a fitness device. But its increasingly become a more general personal-wellness device with the addition of features like deep breathing, fall detection, and an electrocardiogram function. And now its able to track one of the most important elements of health: sleep.

The Watchs Sleep app is part of the new watchOS 7, available just in time for the release of the Watch Series 6 today. M

uch of the sleep functionality is shared between the Watch and an iPhone thats running iOS 14, also available today. I installed the public betas of both systems to test out the sleep functions, and spoke to Apple about the thinking behind its features. Ive never used smartphone-based sleep tracking before, but I found that the Sleep app prompted me to start thinking about sleep in the way I think about hitting my step goals or exercise goals for the day. Rather than overloading me with too much data, Apples simple approach focuses on creating a healthier bedtime routine.

How To Track Sleep On The Apple Watch

Use your Apple Watch to create a routine and cultivate better sleep habits. The CDC recommends adults get at least seven hours of shut-eye a night, and the Apple Sleep app can help you get on track. Create your personalized sleep schedule by following the prompts on your device. Once its set up, you can adjust your sleep goal and schedule on your iPhone or Apple Watch. Heres how to set up sleep tracking on your Apple Watch.

Track Your Sleep With Apple Watch

With the Sleep app on Apple Watch, you can create bedtime schedules to help you meet your sleep goals. Wear your watch to bed, and Apple Watch can track your sleep. When you wake up, open the Sleep app to learn how much sleep you got and see your sleep trends over the past 14 days.

If your Apple Watch is charged less than 30 percent before you go to bed, youre prompted to charge it. In the morning, just glance at the greeting to see how much charge remains.

You can create multiple schedulesfor example, one for weekdays and another for weekends. For each schedule, you can set up the following:

  • A sleep goal

  • What time you want to go to bed and wake up

  • An alarm sound to wake you up

  • When to turn on sleep mode, which limits distractions before you go to bed and protects your sleep after youre in bed

  • Sleep tracking, which uses your motion to detect sleep when Apple Watch is in sleep mode and worn to bed

Tip: To exit sleep mode, first turn the Digital Crown to unlock. Then swipe up to open Control Center and tap .

How Sleep Tracking Works In Watchos 7

The tech thats gone into watchOS 7s Sleep Tracking feature doesnt seem to be all that different from third-party solutions, at least on the surface. Using a combination of movement and breathing tracking, the Apple Watch differentiates sleep and wake states to create a timeline of your sleep each night. You can then view this data in the new Sleep app or the Health app on your iPhone.

So, all things considered, its a pretty straightforward app. Where it gets Apple-y is, of course, in the integration.

Manually Turn It On Every Night

Swipeup to the Control Center on your Apple Watch, tap on the Do Not Disturb icon, and then tap on the “Sleep” tab.

You can also do this on your iPhone, which will then automatically put your Apple Watch into Sleep Mode, too. To do this, swipe down to the Control Center, tap on the Focus tab, and then tap the Sleep icon.

What Can Fitbit Do That The Apple Watch Cant

The Fitbit, especially the Fitbit Sense, has far more fitness tracking capabilities than the Apple Watch does, and it goes beyond sleep tracking. The Fitbit Sense has a tracker that tracks your stress level through out the day and will give you recommendations accordingly. It also tracks your skin temperature and blood oxygen levels.

All of these things, combined with the more common fitness tracker features, really give you a complete picture of your health and wellness, beyond just the physical. The skin temperature specifically, even tracks slight changes in your temperature to help give you warnings that you might be getting sick.

How do Sleep Trackers Work? Are they Accurate?

What Data Does The Apple Watch Sleep Tracking App Collect

On the watch, you can see your sleep schedule, most recent data and a summary of your sleep consistency over the past 14 days.

You can see more data on the Apple Health iOS app. When you open it up and head for the Sleep section, you can also see the average time spent in bed and time spent asleep over a month. You can also see a series of highlights that range from average sleep over seven days as well as heart rate during sleep. 

The importance of seeing that heart rate information during this time is that it can give you a sense of how your body recovers from the day and can also be a sign of whether youre in a good state of health. Heart rate during sleep can vary from 40-100bpm, and can be influenced by a range of things like exercise or drinking.

What Do I Use

Despite all of the new entrants into the sleep tracking Apple Watch industry, I still find AutoSleep to be the most powerful option, but thats not to say its perfect. AutoSleep offers you a lot of data, and you can pick and choose whether to read too much into it.

Additionally, I pair the AutoSleep data with the features introduced with watchOS 7 and iOS 14. You can still use features such as Wind Down and Sleep Mode, and track data using third-party sources such as AutoSleep.

NapBot is becoming a close second for me, and its getting better with each passing update. Both NapBot and AutoSleep, for instance, offer iOS 14 home screen widgets and Apple Watch complications, something that isnt possible with Apples Health data.

The key, regardless of which application you pick, is to make sure there is some sort of automatic sleep detection feature. This reduces friction and means you dont have to remember to manually start a sleep tracking session every night before bed. Instead, your Apple Watch can track your sleep in the background, without any interaction from you.

These apps also integrate with Apples Health app, which means you can get an overview of your sleep data alongside everything else in the Health app. The Health app is useful for tracking long-term trends and averages, but if you want detailed data, youll have to jump to your third-party app of choice.

Apple Watch Sleep Comparison

A couple of random notes:

The Apple Watch doesnt list Awake Time directly like most wearables/sleep systems, so you have to do some quick math. Doing the math backwards, it would mean 27 mins of awake time based on specifying 6hr 43mins sleep time between 12:17AM and 7:27AM

All the other devices specify an actual Awake time, so I used that. I agree, the math doesnt always work in those cases. I just wrote what it showed.

For HRV values, Whoop and Apple Watch do record them. Whoop shows a single value, the Apple Watch recorded two values. Garmin does track HRV values at night , but doesnt explicitly list HRV values in the app anywhere.

For Sleep Scores, each company does their own magic. Note that for Whoop I used the Sleep Performance score, and not the recovery score. For this night the recovery score in Whoop showed 49 , which is basically a body recovery score upon HRV. Garmin does the same thing with HRV. Withings Sleep score comes from mixing sleep stages. However, for last night the Withings for some odd reason didnt calculate a sleep score yet. So, maybe later?

For average sleep heart rate, all companies track heart rate constantly throughout the night. And all of them showed the values. And some of them showed max/min. But Withings had a metric that showed the average for sleep explicitly.

For respiration rates, I used them as-is when shown.

Phew, got all that? Good.

Edit Your Sleep Schedule

Tap Open Sleep Options in Health to open the Health app, where you can turn on the switch for Sleep Schedule. Tap the Edit link under Full Schedule and set your usual times for going to sleep and waking up. You can also set different times for different days, such as one schedule for weekdays and another for weekends.

Under Additional Details, tap the entry for Sleep Goal and set the number of hours and minutes that you hope to sleep. Tap the entry for Wind Down to select the amount of time for winding down before bed. Tap the entry for Wind Down Shortcuts to set up any shortcuts youd like to apply during Wind Down. Finally, tap the entry for Options to confirm the options you set in the Sleep app and to set up a few more.

What Is Blood Oxygen Monitoring

Blood oxygen levels – also known as SpO2 – refer to the percentage of oxygen being carried by red blood cells from the lungs to the rest of the body, as well as how well this oxygenated blood is being delivered.

Using pulse oximetry, which is essentially a simplified way of saying ‘non-invasive oxygen saturation monitoring’, the Apple Watch Series 6 and other wearables are able to notify the user when their blood oxygen percentage falls below a certain point. 

Typically, anything above 95% is considered to be ‘normal’. However, anything below 92% is a potential indicator of an underlying health issue, such as sleep apnea. 

Fitbit, for example, uses the SpO2 monitor in its wearables to specifically monitor fluctuations and variations in blood oxygen levels during tracked sleep sessions. However, the Apple Watch Series 6 appears to be ready to check on SpO2 levels at any time when the user is still – similar to its ECG tracking function – with readings also only taking 15 seconds. Periodic measurements will also be taken in the background during inactivity and sleep. 

What else can blood oxygen monitoring help with? Well, as noted by John Hopkins Medicine, pulse oximetry can be used to check whether somebody needs help with their breathing , estimate whether a person is able to take part in strenuous physical activity and, as we mentioned, indicate whether breathing stops temporarily during sleep .

Apple Watch Sleep Tracking Setup

Once I installed the on my iPhone and watchOS 7 beta on my Apple Watch, getting started with sleep tracking was simple. In the native Health app, theres a new sleep tab that gives you the option to create a schedule or multiple schedules depending on what time youd like to go to sleep and wake up.

I created two schedules: One for the weekdays that has me asleep from 11:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., and one for the weekends from 12:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Other setup features include automatic Sleep Mode, which turns on Do Not Disturb during your desired sleep hours, and Track Time in Bed with iPhone, which factors when you pick up or use your iPhone during the night into your daily sleep data. You can also enable simplified iPhone and Apple Watch interfaces, which I appreciated as visual cues that I should be trying to sleep, rather than watching TikToks. 

Finally, I assigned a Wind Down window of 30 minutes, meaning at 11 p.m. or 12 a.m. my Apple Watch and iPhone give me a little nudge to start getting ready for sleep. This is also when my Watch will remind me to juice it up, if its battery is less than 30% full.

Change Or Add A Sleep Schedule

Apple Watch Sleep Tracking: How it actually works // Setup, Tested, Details, Comparisons

  • Open the Sleep app

  • Tap Full Schedule, then do one of the following:

  • Change a sleep schedule: Tap the current schedule.

  • Add a sleep schedule: Tap Add Another Schedule.

  • Change your sleep goal: Tap Sleep Goal, then set the amount of time you want to sleep.

  • Change Wind Down time: Tap Wind Down, then set the amount of time you want sleep mode to be active before bedtime.

    To reduce distractions before your scheduled bedtime, sleep mode turns on during Wind Down. Sleep mode turns off the watch display and turns on Do Not Disturb.

  • Do any of the following:

  • Set the days for your schedule: Tap your schedule, then tap the area below Active On. Choose days, then tap Done.

  • Adjust your wake time and bedtime: Tap Wake Up or Bedtime, turn the Digital Crown to set a new time, then tap Set.

  • Set the alarm options: Turn Alarm off or on and tap Sound to choose an alarm sound.

  • Remove or cancel a sleep schedule: Tap Delete Schedule to remove an existing schedule, or tap Cancel to cancel creating a new one.

  • What Sleep Tracking On Watchos 7 Doesnt Do

    Now that weve covered everything you can do in the new Sleep app on watchOS 7, lets get into the things you cant do, because to be honest, there are some sorely desired features missing from the app.

    Namely, watchOS 7 only tracks when youre sleeping, not how well youre sleeping. Other third-party apps do provide this feature, giving you an idea of your REM rhythm throughout the night. In other words, all it does is help you build a healthy sleep habit there isnt a lot of complex data tracking going on.
