Someone with alcohol use disorder has a high risk of developing insomnia as part of the withdrawal and recovery process.

In one study, 58 percent of men in observational treatment for alcohol use disorder experienced insomnia during their first six days of withdrawal.

There are a few reasons why alcohol withdrawal and insomnia are linked, including:

  • People with alcoholism, or alcohol use disorder, experience sleep problems before or early on in their addiction.
  • People with alcoholism tend to drink alcohol to help them sleep. An alcoholic drink might even be part of their bedtime routine.
  • Alcoholism might co-occur with other medical conditions such as anxiety or depression, both of which have insomnia as a symptom.
  • When a person is using alcohol to cope with the effects of these disorders and he or she stops drinking, the symptoms of the co-occurring disorder tend to heighten.

Can Alcohol Cause Insomnia In Young Adults

Letâs crunch some numbers and assess the evidence.

  • Thirty percent of young adults report binge drinking 11 and alcohol-related problems.12

  • Insomnia disorder is reported to affect 6-15% of the general population 13 but insomnia rates as high as 58% have been reported among those who abuse alcohol ).14

    Individuals with AUD â and who experience poor sleep â report particularly high rates of using alcohol as a sleep aid .15

Itâs clear that using alcohol as a sleep aid leads to poorer sleep and disrupted sleep can lead to an even greater dependence on alcohol. No wonder addiction feeds off this debilitating cycle and insomnia in young adults prevails.

Precautions If You Take Trazodone

  • Because trazodone might not work well to treat insomnia after a few weeks, check in with your doctor periodically to discuss how its going or whether its still working.
  • If you have trouble getting to sleep, take it several hours before you go to bed. If you have trouble staying asleep, take it within 30 minutes of bedtime.
  • Avoid trazodone if youre recovering from a heart attack. Inform your doctor if you have abnormal heart rhythms, weakened immunity, an active infection, or liver or kidney disease. Use it cautiously if you have heart disease.
  • Watch for adverse effects. Thats especially important for people older than 55 or so because theyre more susceptible to abnormal heart rhythms and falls caused by dizziness or drowsiness. Close monitoring is also crucial if youre taking trazodone with another antidepressant.
  • As with any sleep medication, never mix trazodone with alcohol, and use it cautiously if youre taking other sedating medications or anti-hypertensive drugs. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about other possible drug interactions.
  • If you develop an erection thats unusually prolonged or occurs without stimulation, discontinue the drug and contact your physician. Also call your doctor if you develop a fever or sore throat, or other signs of infection while taking trazodone.

      Not only is alcohol not a cure for insomnia or any sleep disorder, it can contribute to sleeplessness and alcohol dependency.

      Our bodies are regulated by a 24-hour master biological clock that governs our circadian rhythm, which alcohol tampers with. The circadian rhythm regulates our bodies processes metabolism, cardiovascular, brain power,;depression and moods, sleep, etc., so when we drink alcohol, were tampering with our bodies systems.

      When your sleep is disrupted, it can affect the hormones and brain signals which are normally released during sleep. This can impact how well your body repairs itself as you rest.

This is when you dream and its considered the most restorative sleep state. Typically there are six to seven cycles of REM sleep which is combined with deep sleep cycles .

      Alcohol consumption leads to missing several REM cycles, which leaves your mind sleep-deprived. The REM cycle restores your brain while deep sleep restores your body. Since alcohol can put you directly into a deep sleep, it gives off the sensation of having had a restful sleep, but you can wake up mentally exhausted.       How The Brain Controls Sleep

      It was originally thought that sleep was the result of decreased activity in the brain’s systems that maintained wakefulness, but research has shown that sleep is an active process of the brain, controlled by nerve centers in the lower brain stem.
