Depression is far more common than you might think, with nearly one out of 10 adults depressed at any time, about half of them severely.

How To Help Someone Else

If you think someone you know has smiling depression, share your concerns. Normalize mental health issues and talk to them about how they can get help. Offer emotional support as well as practical support.

For example, you might offer a ride to a medical appointment, or depending on the nature of your relationship, you might even offer to attend an appointment with them. Direct them to community resources as well. Tell them about mental health services that may be available to them.

If a loved one refuses to get help, you might consider talking to a therapist yourself. Talking to someone can help you manage your own stress while also reinforcing strategies you can use to help someone you care about.

There are many different types of depression. A symptom of chronic depression mentioned in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual; is diurnal mood variation, which is sometimes referred to as morning depression.

How To Tell Or Know If Someone Is Depressed

Knowing whether someone is depressed or not is difficult, especially if you have never been through depression before. Depression is called a hidden or invisible illness for a reason.

Most people who feel depressed hide it from others.

There are several reasons why people hide their depression from others. Most of these reasons are already covered in point #5 under the symptoms. The main reason is depression is a social stigma around depression and people feel ashamed of letting others know they are depressed. They are afraid that other people will judge them for not able to handle their emotions. So they rather keep their depression to themselves.

Furthermore, its difficult to tell if someone is depressed or not because not all depressed people had a tough time in their daily life. Some people can still cope or even excel in their job, relationships, and pretend to be happy on social media despite having the symptoms of depression. This is called high-functioning depression.

So how could you tell if someone has depression when they are so good at covering it up?

Persistent Irritability Or Mood Swings

Depression can cause us to experience outbursts and mood swings. One minute were angry, the next were crying uncontrollably or we shut down and go numb. Changes in our mood can switch in a moments notice. Sometimes these changes can be triggered by small or insignificant challenges, while other times they can come about unprovoked. If you notice a pattern of irritability or mood swings that last more than a few days, it may be linked to depression.

Getting Help For Depression

If you think you might be depressed, take a depression screening. Print out the results or e-mail them to yourself and then show them to a counselor or doctor.

To get help, start with your student health center or counseling service on campus. Most community colleges provide limited free mental health services and can refer you to local providers for longer-term treatment. You can also talk to your family doctor.
