Side Effects Of Fluoxetine

Side Effects of Antidepressants | SSRIs: Prozac, Lexapro, Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa, Luvox

Please do not be worried by the side effects listed on this page. Many people take fluoxetine without any side effects or only a few mild side effects. Starting with a lower dose can sometimes help if side effects do occur.

Side effects that do appear should disappear or get better after a few days. If they do not, you should go back to your doctor.

Do not stop taking the fluoxetine until you talk to your doctor, or you may get withdrawal symptoms as well.

Very common side effects when taking fluoxetine include:

Common side effects of taking fluoxetine include:

  • not feeling hungry
  • nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, poor concentration, feeling tense
  • sleep problems, unusual dreams, tiredness or sleepiness
  • dizziness
  • change in taste, or dry mouth
  • uncontrollable shaking movements
  • heartbeat feels quick and uneven
  • flushing, sweating more, feeling shaky or chills
  • yawning
  • rash, itching lumps , other skin itching
  • joint pain
  • an irregular heartbeat or a heart attack
  • breathing difficulties
  • a change in the way you feel, ranging from agitation to falling into a coma

You are also at risk of getting serotonin syndrome . This is rare, but you should watch out for it.

You must stop taking Fluoxetine and go straight to hospital if you have any of the following symptoms:

Go to a doctor or hospital straight away but do not stop taking your fluoxetine if you get the following symptoms:

You Should Only Take Fluoxetine As Agreed With Your Doctor

You will get the best effect from fluoxetine if you take it every day at the dose prescribed by your doctor.

Your doctor might start you on a low dose and then increase it to your full dose slowly over two to four weeks.

Make sure that you know your dose. If it’s not written on the label, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Young people aged eight to 18 may start taking fluoxetine at a lower dose using the liquid, and then move on to the capsules if the dose increases.

It is usually best to take fluoxetine in the morning. This is to reduce the chance of it causing insomnia . However, it is important to choose a time each day that you can always remember. This could be when you wake up, a mealtime, or when you brush your teeth.

Fluoxetine is best taken after food.

Swallow the capsule with a drink of water – if you chew it, it tastes bitter.

Antidepressants To Treat Insomnia

In some cases of severe insomnia or idiopathic insomnia, a sleep doctor may decide to prescribe an antidepressant as treatment.

While it seems counterintuitive to give someone with severe insomnia a medication that may cause insomnia in many people as a direct side effect it just might work in your individual case. As mentioned human diversity is a wondrous thing, and what causes one person untold misery may grant another person relief from their misery. You just never know.

Headaches And Concentration Problems

A study with 50 insomnia patients found that 48% of them experienced frequent headaches .

This is a side effect that I experienced personally on a daily basis back when I had sleep issues. Research shows that insomnia can cause headaches, and it’s fairly common. That might prompt someone to take Tylenol that may make insomnia worse.

Additionally, people with insomnia score lower on tests relating to their concentration and focus levels. This will affect your work, and every other aspect of your life to a small degree.

The Irony And Frustration Of Antidepressant Insomnia

Prozac Side Effects Insomnia

As someone who once experienced antidepressant insomnia, I can sympathize with anyone going through this. I took Zoloft at one point when I was bothered by serious generalized anxiety. Immediately I had sleeping problems. Besides the fact that I just didnt feel tired, I also had constant muscular twitches that would prevent me from falling asleep even when I got sleepy.

So I would be lying in bed starting to finally relax after several hours. Then one muscle would twitch. Then another. Then another. Sometimes even just my little finger, other times my whole leg or my head. There was simply no way I could sleep with all that muscular activity.

Soon I was a complete nervous wreck, and despite the reassurances from my doctor that the twitches and insomnia would eventually go away and that it took at least two weeks for the medication to actually start working on the anxiety I had doubts I could survive that long. So I quit the Zoloft and never went back on any antidepressant. I have since learned that SSRI medications such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, etc. can cause involuntary muscular movements as well as insomnia in some people.

Lifestyle Changes May Help Curb Sleep

However, you might find relief from RLS through lifestyle changes and/or taking certain vitamins if they are lacking in your diet. For example, going to the bed at the same time every night and getting up at the same time each morning may help. Also, there are some indications that a lack of some vitamins and minerals, such as iron, folic acid, magnesium, and vitamin B12, can contribute to RLS.

Not surprisingly, insomnia and delayed sleep onset are associated with stimulants such as Adderall and Ritalin , that are used in the treatment of ADHD. However, the effect of Ritalin on sleep may depend on the amount of time a child has been on the drug and when the medication is given. There have also been reports of children having difficulty falling asleep as the medication wears off near bedtime.

Sleep is an important part of staying healthy and feeling good. Again, if you feel you are experiencing sleep issues as a result of medication, speak to your doctor without delay. Sleep-related side effects due to drugs impact relatively few patients. And if it ends up your sleep problems are not drug-related, the good news is there are steps you can take to rectify the situation. Changes in sleep hygiene, including your bedroom environment can provide some of the most effective improvements. Visit the National Sleep Foundations website for more helpful tips.

Prozac And Erectile Dysfunction

About 1% to 7% of patients report erectile dysfunction when taking Prozac. Another 2% to 8% report ejaculation dysfunction. A healthcare provider may prescribe Wellbutrin or an ED medication such as Viagra or Cialis for erectile dysfunction. Saffron may help with ejaculation dysfunction. However, erectile dysfunction is a common side effect of SSRIs, so a healthcare provider may need to switch to another type of antidepressant.

    Polysomnographic Sleep Studies In Depression

The most detailed information on sleep in depression was provided by studies using polysomnography , that is considered the gold standard for sleep assessment. Based on registration of the three physiological parameters such as the brain , muscle and eye movements bioelectric activity, PSG allows human sleep to be scored into sleep stages. Subsequently, it is possible to calculate several sleep parameters 1) that express sleep continuity, sleep depth, and distribution of sleep stages.

Can I Take Fluoxetine If I Am Pregnant Or Breastfeeding

    Pregnancy

If you become pregnant while you are on fluoxetine, you should carry on taking the medicine and go back to your doctor as soon as possible, to see if you should change or stop your medicine.

There is a slightly higher risk of problems in the developing baby if you take fluoxetine it in the early stages of pregnancy. However, fluoxetine and related antidepressants are thought to be better choices if you need antidepressant medicine.

Remember that you need to stay well through your pregnancy, and you may need a medicine to help you to do that.

Fluoxetine may cause heart problems in the developing baby, and other symptoms in new-born babies.

If you and your doctor agree that you will continue taking fluoxetine during your pregnancy, then you should tell your midwife that you are taking it before you give birth.

    Post-natal

If fluoxetine is taken in the last five months of a pregnancy, it can cause a serious condition called persistent pulmonary hypertension of the new-born . This can make the baby breathe faster and look a bit blue in colour. PPHN affects around three in 1,000 babies born to mums who take SSRIs. This compares with a rate of two in 1,000 among babies born to mums who do not take SSRIs.

PPHN appears in the first 24 hours after birth. You will need help from the midwife and doctors, so it is better if they are looking out for symptoms.

Can I Take Fluoxetine With Other Medications

Fluoxetine does not mix well with some other medicines and drugs.

Do not take fluoxetine if you take an antidepressant medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor , or if you have taken one in the last two weeks. MAOIs include moclobemide, isocarboxazid, phenelzine and tranylcypromine.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist before you take fluoxetine if you are prescribed any other medication, to check that the combination is safe.

Before you start taking fluoxetine, tell your doctor if you are taking any other medications, including things you have bought over the counter for common illnesses like colds and flu or topical applications that you put on your skin.

How Are Sleep And Depression Linked

Sleeping too much or not sleeping at all can be a sign of depression. These sleep problems alone are not the same thing as depression, but they can be one of its important symptoms.

Depression is a mood disorder that is characterized by sadness or feeling blue along with a series of physical symptoms such as low energy, disrupted sleep, and appetite changes. Nearly everyone feels normal sadness or feels down from time to time. Sometimes, however, the sad feelings become intense, last for long periods of time, and involve other physical symptoms that prevent a person from leading a normal life. These feelings often lead to a medical diagnosis of clinical depression.

Lack of sleep caused by another medical illness or by personal problems can also lead to daytime fatigue and make diagnosed depression worse.

An inability to sleep that lasts over a long period of time is also an important clue that someone may be depressed.

Yes, fluoxetine causes insomnia. Be sure he is taking it first thing in the AM. A lot of people I know also take Trazodone with Fluoxetine so they can sleep through the night. The first time I took Fluoxetine/Prozac I lost about 10 pounds, was extremely thirsty and felt nauseous a lot. I think the side effects went away after a while though but I don’t remember how long it took. However, the next time I took it I had no side effects at all. Also, sometimes just not sleeping can make one feel sick to the stomach. Good luck!

    +2MacIntosh12

laura811, I agree with you, the addition of trazadone would probably be a good idea, depending on the mgs of fluoxetine. If he is taking 20mgs of Prozac, then I think Trazadone would be fine. Best wishes to you,

    jntsjanet

Hi thank you for replying my son was originally on trazodone n then told to change by the doctor in order to help with the depression. It did help him sleep I will ask the doctor if he can take it with the fluoxetine. He is totally exhausted n trying to work but is really struggling. Thank you again.

    MacIntosh12

Ask your son to call his doctor, his doc may indeed let him take both Fluox and Trazadone, if traz helped with sleep.Best wishes,

For now, try Benadryl while you wait to see doctor. Not the greatest, but it is better than nothing. I take 2.5 to 3 tablets, but I am not recommending you go above dosage guidelines I do it but can’t recommend to others.

    Will Fluoxetine Affect My Sleep

    Sedating antidepressants for insomnia

You can feel drowsy in the first few days of taking fluoxetine. However, it should get better after the first week or two. You may become more anxious, or it may make you irritable. This should settle after a couple of weeks.

If you feel very sleepy, and youve been taking it for more than a month, you should go back to the doctor and see what else you could do.

Can I Take Prozac If Im Pregnant Or Breastfeeding

Ask your doctor about taking this medicine if you are pregnant. Taking an SSRI antidepressant during late pregnancy may cause serious medical complications in the baby. However, you may have a relapse of depression if you stop taking your antidepressant. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant. If you are pregnant, your name may be listed on a pregnancy registry to track the effects of fluoxetine on the baby.

If you are breastfeeding, tell your doctor if you notice agitation, fussiness, feeding problems, or poor weight gain in the nursing baby.
