Unusual Behaviour From Other People

What is Insomnia?Causes, Signs and symptoms, Diagnosis and treatment

Yep as surprising as this may be, your first inkling of pregnancy might be other people noticing something different about you! ‘My toddler daughter became obsessed with my belly and started wanting to lie her face on it at nap time and bedtime, says Petra, A Mum Reviews. Same goes for Kate, who blogs at Family Fever My toddler became super-clingy!

A More Sensitive Nose

My sense of smell went into overdrive and everything smelt awful ‘, says Fritha from Tigerlilly Quinn. ‘I always get a very specific smell in early pregnancy’, says Hayley, Sparkles and Stretchmarks. And for Ali, a quite inconvenient problem: ‘The smell of my new kitchen repulsed me! I couldn’t go in there for at least the first 12 weeks.’

Develop A Bedtime Routine

One of the best things you can do to manage insomnia while youre pregnant is to set up good sleep habits.

Begin by trying to go to bed at the same time every night. Start your routine with something relaxing to help you unwind.

Avoid screen time at least an hour before bed. Blue light from the TV, your mobile phone, or tablet can have an impact on your bodys circadian rhythm. Try reading a book instead.

Taking a soothing bath might also make you sleepy. Just be careful that the temperature isnt too hot that can be dangerous for your developing baby. This is especially true during early pregnancy.

To be safe, avoid hot tubs.

    Running To The Bathroom

    Pin on Pregnancy Insomnia

One more cause of early pregnancy insomnia is having to get up a dozen times through the night to urinate. The reason for this is that in the early stages of pregnancy the uterus is still small and hasn’t popped out of the pelvic cavity. Consequently, it pushes against the bladder causing pressure and the need to urinate frequently. By the time the second trimester rolls around, the uterus has grown enough to push out of the pelvis and the pressure is off – until the third trimester when the sheer size of it causes pressure again. Pregnancy insomnia usually returns in the last few weeks of pregnancy, only this time it is due to the inability to find a comfortable place to lie. Rolling over is an MGM production and heartburn can keep a woman awake for hours during the night. Even your orthopedic mattress isn’t doing the job you thought it would do.

When considering sleep aids to help you get a good nights sleep during pregnancy, its important to make sure youre not jeopardizing your own or fetal health. Check the drug you are considering. Take with your doctor first.

We definitely dont recommend melatonin or other herbal / alternative sleep therapies that havent been rigorously tested and proven to be safe during pregnancy, Leah Hazard advises.

If the physical discomfort caused by the size of the bumps interferes with sleep, James Wilson has some practical suggestions. Its valuable to sleep on the left side and buy a body or maternity pillow, or you can put the pillow between your legs to keep your pelvis in a neutral position.

Regurgitation and heartburn Common symptoms during pregnancySo, if this is the case, try leaving a long gap between eating and going to bed.One study published in Journal of Clinical GastroenterologyShowed that the shorter the interval between meals, the greater the problem of reflux. Practice Better Sleep Hygiene

Sleep hygiene refers to habits that make it easier to fall asleep. Good sleep hygiene signals the brain to wind down and begin sleeping.

People may wish to try the following:

    • Only sleep in the bed and not anywhere else.
    • Wake and go to bed at the same time each day.
    • Keep the bedroom dark and cool.
    • Make the bed as comfortable and inviting as possible.
    • Do not use screens in bed, such as phones or television.
    • Get up if you cannot sleep after 15 to 30 minutes.
    • Limit caffeine before bed, or eliminate it throughout the day.
    • Limit fluids in the hours before bedtime.

Other habits to promote sleep include having a massage to reduce stress or taking a warm bath before bed.

    • Keep a regular sleep schedule.
    • Keep your naps as short as possible.
    • Use your bed only for sleep.
    • Avoid caffeine.

Abdominal Twinges Pulling Or Pinching Sensation

Signs of Pregnancy and Implantation and What You Can Do

This is definitely a lesser known early pregnancy symptom, but not so rare. In fact, quite a few women experience some sort of unusual feelings in their tummy a few days or weeks after conception.

This is due to your uterus starting to stretch already after implantation, getting ready to let a little human grow inside of you.

It can feel like twinges, sudden localized pain, or more like a pulling of pinching sensation in your uterine or lower abdominal region. And it can happen on either side.

I have been experiencing twinges on both my left and right side, similar to where I normally have period pain.

This mom felt them from as early as 8 days post ovulation!

I was getting niggles from about 8 dpo, tested at 10 or 11 dpo simply cos I felt different.

Use Your Bed Only For Sleep

And then brace yourself one of the key reasons sleep therapy works can be one of the hardest to do. Use your bed only for sleep!

Our brains are learning machines. We can teach them to sleep when we get into bed, or we can teach them to do other things like worry. It all depends on what we actually do when we get into bed.

Unfortunately, the bed can become ground zero for a thousand other activities ranging from reading your iPhone, replaying yesterdays arguments or worrying about tomorrows meetings.

So, things not associated with sleep should be scrubbed from your bedroom. Remember, you can just as easily scroll Instagram from your couch. If youre in your bed and not sleeping for more than 15 minutes at any point in the night, get up and do something boring until you feel sleepy.

    Diagnosing Insomnia And Sleep Disturbances

    insomnia Archives

A diagnosis of insomnia is usually made via self-report sleep history. Sleep diaries can also provide information about bedtime, sleep onset, nighttime awakenings, awake time, and subjective evaluation of sleep quality. Overnight polysomnograms are rarely needed to diagnose insomnia. There are also sleep questionnaires available which are mostly used for research purposes and not necessary for the diagnosis of insomnia. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index measures quality and patterns of sleep, and it seems to be a reliable and valid tool in pregnant women. It includes seven items related to sleep disturbance severity, sleep-related satisfaction and the degree of daytime functional impairment, impairment perception and distress and concern-related to sleeping problem. Each item is rated on a five-point Likert scale and added up to a total score ranging from 0 to 28, with scores higher than 8, suggesting insomnia. The insomnia severity index which uses seven items to examine the patients perception of insomnia has not been specifically validated among pregnant women. The insomnia symptoms questionnaire which is a 13-item self-report questionnaire was recently validated in 143 pregnant women at 12 weeks gestation.

Are Any Herbal Teas Safe To Drink During Pregnancy

Some herbal teas are considered safer than others for pregnant women. Nettle tea is used in many herbal teas and is generally considered to be pregnancy-safe. While some midwives may advise drinking red raspberry leaf tea, there is no strong evidence of its benefits for pregnant women, and a 2019 study suggested it may have adverse effects on pregnancy outcomes.

During pregnancy, you should stay away from any herbal teas that are marketed for weight loss or dieting, or those that can be used as laxatives. Also, dont drink those that contain any type of nutritional supplement. This is because the supplements can cause complications or interactions with other medications.

Keep in mind that even herbal teas labeled as pregnancy teas havent had enough studies done on them to be considered completely safe during pregnancy. Ask your doctor before trying out new types of tea.

How Sleep Changes Early In Pregnancy

The first trimester of pregnancy includes many changes that affect a womans body. A handful of these changes can also undermine sleep in pregnancy, and some develop soon after conception. It is even possible for some of these early alterations to lead to symptoms characteristic of insomnia.

Women in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy commonly experience fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness. Sleepiness or drowsiness may lead to an increased desire to sleep during the day, dozing off when sedentary, or taking naps. This may lead to poor concentration, impaired job performance, and even a propensity toward accidents.

Sleepiness affects up to 37.5% of pregnant women at 6 to 7 weeks and is due to increasing levels of the hormone progesterone. Progesterone often leads to increased sleep fragmentation, which may affect overall sleep quality.

Moreover, morning sickness, increased urinary frequency, back pain, breast tenderness, increased appetite, and anxiety can all disrupt sleep as well. It is a reasonable conclusion that these difficulties would disrupt a womans ability to stay asleep, triggering awakenings that may contribute to insomnia if difficulty returning to sleep occurs.

By week 10 of pregnancy, women spend more time sleeping, with a longer sleep duration overnight, and frequent naps throughout the day. This is partly due to the fact that sleep has become more disturbed by frequent awakenings, and the amount of deep sleep decreases.

I had no idea I was pregnant so I was completely oblivious that waking up had anything to do with pregnancy. I was so frustrated I couldnt sleep through the night!
