Why Sleeping Without Underwear Can Be Beneficial

Sleeping naked might not the first thing you will think about for improving health, but there are some benefits that you might not be able to ignore. As it turns out sleeping naked has many health benefits that will surprise you for sure.

Ditching our clothes while sleeping is considered a very western activity to date and most Indians are not used to it or probably not even aware of this idea. Our upbringing and socio-cultural parameters are such that we consider sleeping naked as a deeply private act and feel uncomfortable in practicing it even when alone. Because most of us are brought up in a large family set-ups wherein shared feelings take precedence over privacy.

However, it is important to know that choosing to sleep with clothes or without is a personal choice. And in this article we will give you expert-backed reasons why ditching your underwear, in fact, all your clothes during sleep have multi-dimensional benefits to your health. In fact, it is quite crucial that you sleep without underwear if you have vaginal issues.

  • It enables free flow of air
  • It helps you sleep faster and better
  • It reduces the risk of yeast infections
  • It reduces the risk of allergies

Is It Ok To Sleep In Panties

It turns out that sleeping in panties is more than OK! According to OB/GYN and clinical assistant professor Dr. Alyssa Dweck, its not medically necessary for most women to go commando at night.

So, whats with all the drama?

The reason theres so much controversy over wearing underwear to bed has to do with the non-breathable materials lining some panties. Naturally, if youre choosing uncomfortable drawers, your vaginal health might suffer. Thats why people prone to inflammation downstairs might want to avoid bedtime underwear.

However, overnight undies themselves arent the problem. As long as you opt for panties made of cool, soft, and light fabric, you can let your skin breathe all night long.

Advice: Is It Better To Go Commando When You Sleep

If you are prone to vaginal infections, sleeping without undies is a good idea. If not, do what’s comfortable.

Dear Asking For A Friend,

My friend never wears underwear to bed. She wears shorts, or pyjama pants, but skips the undies. She says that her doctor told her its good to air things out, and that it reduces the chances of yeast and bladder infections. Is this true? I was raised to wear underwear to bed, but I dont know if there is really a reason for it. We are looking to you to set the record straight.

Signed, All Covered Up

Dear All Covered Up,

Weve learned all sorts of information and life hacks from our mothers and grandmothers. All over the world, young girls were told not to bathe, swim or wash their hair while on their period and that advice persisted for generations. Today, we think its silly. When it comes to sleepwear, personal comfort reigns supreme. And while it matters less what men wear to bed, experts agree that sleeping in the nude can help some women with stubborn things that plague our female parts, such as infections.

The reason is simple. Below-the-belt common issues like yeast infections, itchiness and bacterial vaginosis are caused by bacteria and microorganisms that thrive in a dark and moist environment. Tight-fitting panties made from silk or lace might look and feel sexy, but wearing them can lead to infections.

If You Stop Wearing Underwear During Workouts You May Experience A Strong Smell Down There

Why is sleeping without underwear better for our health?

If you’ve chosen to stop wearing underwear every day, you should know it’s pretty safe to go underwear-free at the gym or on your morning run but you might notice odor coming from your lady parts faster. “Perspiration allows skin bacteria in hair-bearing areas, including the genital area, to cause body odor,” OB-GYN Alyssa Dweck told Shape. If you’re panty-free, there’s no barrier between you and your workout shorts or leggings, so, instead of the sweat hitting your underwear, it goes straight to your pants, causing you to notice that sweaty odor you know and hate faster, according to Shape.

Choosing not to wear underwear during a workout ultimately comes down to personal preference, and it may actually even improve your performance. “Some women prefer to go commando during running, elliptical, spinning, kickboxing, etc., which affords less chafing, less visible lines in tighter workout clothes, and gives a sense of more mobility and flexibility,” Dweck said.

If You Stop Wearing Underwear Completely You May Want To Consider What You’re Wearing

It’s true that going panty-free may help prevent chafing and irritation down there, however, that’s also dependent on what pants you’re wearing. “If you’re wearing loose-fitting pajamas or something comfortable, not wearing should be fine and allow your private parts to breathe,” Florida-based OB-GYN Christine Greves told Refinery29. But if you’re wearing tight pants like jeans sans underwear, according to Self, you may be exposing your lady bits to more irritation as the tough fabric can rub against and put pressure on your vulva especially since you don’t have an extra barrier like underwear to protect you.

Irritation may come in the form of redness and itchiness, which mimics symptoms of vaginal infections when it’s, in fact, inflammation. If you wax or shave downstairs, you may want to opt for a skirt, dress, or loose pants if you stop wearing underwear every day. “The trend to shave or wax or laser pubic hair, which is a natural protective barrier, has made the delicate skin of the vulva even more vulnerable to irritation from tight clothing,” OB-GYN Dr. Maria Sophocles told Women’s Health.

The Fit And Fabric Doesn’t Make A Big Difference Either As Long As The Underwear Isn’t Way Too Tight

You might’ve also heard that cotton undies are better for your vagina than synthetic ones. However, this is more of an individual preference, Minkin says, not an evidence-based conclusion. “When you look at the medical literature, there is no real science that shows cotton underwear makes a difference as compared to other fabrics,” Streicher says. Cotton might be a safer option if the skin around your vulva is particularly sensitive, but it’s not a rule for everyone.

The style of underwear such as bikini, boyshort, or thong doesn’t really matter either as long as it isn’t insanely tight and constricting. “Sometimes we see issues with tight thongs where the string gets tucked in there and causes irritation or abrasions to the vulva and perineum, but that’s more of an issue with size and fit,” Streicher says. So if you know your skin is very sensitive down there, maybe don’t sleep in your tiniest G-string and opt for a looser option instead.

But if you can sleep in a thong and it doesn’t bother you, there’s no need to switch your habits, Minkin says. Besides, if any underwear gives you a super uncomfortable wedgie, then you can probably feel that it isn’t great for your vagina whether you wear it during the day or night.

Your Bits Can Finally Breathe

In sunny Singapore, its common to sweat during the day. And while the sweat on your face evaporates , the sweat down there is absorbed by your underwear creating a damp and non-breathable environment thats not healthy for skin.

After a whole day of being covered up, your bits will appreciate finally having some airflow and being given a chance to breathe at night! This is the best time to let your entire body including the parts usually covered by underwear relax and refresh.

Risk Of Urinary Infections

If you are wearing underwear for 24×7 then there is a risk of urinary tract infection. Most people who wear thongs are perfectly happy with them, and if theyre cotton, even better. But if you have a G-string thong and its particularly tight, it can potentially drag bacteria from the rectal area to the vagina, and that can cause the potential for infection. This makes you more prone to yeast infections or urinary tract infections. So its better to wear cotton panties or boxers of your husband.

Is It Healthier To Go To Bed Without Undies

Raise your hand if you grew up with your mother or grandmother urging you to forgo the undies at bedtime in order to “let your lady parts breathe.” Yep, I had no idea how common it was until talking about it with some girlfriends on a recent long run. So is it unhealthy to wear underwear to bed? Are you more prone to getting yeast infections?

There’s really no right or wrong answer when it comes to going commando or not, because it depends solely on your body and your preference. If you’ve never had a problem wearing panties to bed, then it’s perfectly healthy to continue wearing them. Definitely opt for cotton undies, since this natural material is breathable. Wearing tight underwear or a polyester pair can lock in moisture and lead to yeast infections. If you’re uncomfortable with the idea of sleeping with nothing between you and your sheets, try slipping on some loose cotton boxers instead!

On the other hand, if you love to sleep without underwear, then going undies-free is OK, too. Just do what allows you to feel the most comfortable and get the most restful night of sleep. And, if you’re prone to yeast infections, allowing more air to reach your lady parts while you snooze may help prevent this issue.

You May Experience Less Irritation And Chafing If You Stop Wearing Underwear

Whether you feel gross about the idea of going commando or you’re all for freeing your lady bits, it may not be a bad idea to stop wearing underwear completely, or at least occasionally, if you’re experiencing irritation or chafing down there. “With underwear that’s too tight, irritation and chafing of the vaginal area can occur due to the friction generated,” OB-GYN Kecia Gaither told Bustle.

Friction typically occurs when the underwear you’re wearing is made up of artificial fabrics, which can “chafe and irritate” the skin, including the labia, exposing you to bleeding or injury, Healthline reported. You’re actually more susceptible to chafing or injury if you’re menopausal, according to The Sun. Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists spokesperson Dr. Vanessa Mackay was quoted by the publication as saying older women tend to “have thinner skin down there so are more susceptible to irritation and rubbing.”

Should You Wear Underwear To Bed

26 April 2016

Some people like to wear pajamas to bed, while others go for shorts and a T-shirt. Still others prefer to sleep in nothing at all.

For those who choose to wear something, there is yet another decision to be made before bedtime: Should you keep your underwear on or not?

Live Science recently posed this question to a few medical experts to find out whether there are any health-related reasons for men and women to choose for or against underwear in bed. Here is what the experts said.

In general, a woman’s bottom and genital region don’t need to be totally in the buff while she sleeps, said Dr. Alyssa Dweck, an obstetrician and gynecologist in Mount Kisco, New York, and a clinical assistant professor of OB/GYN at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Most women can sleep with their underwear on and not risk encountering any health problems, she told Live Science.

But there is one group of women who may benefit from not wearing underwear to bed and from aerating their bottom at night: Women who suffer from chronic vulvitis or chronic vaginitis , Dweck said. These women are prone to vaginal yeast infections, itchiness and irritation, and are likely better off if they sleep without underpants, she said.
