Why Does Pregnancy Make You Snore
Gaining weight also means accumulating fat around the neck. It causes a narrow upper respiratory tract and blockage of the airflow.
Increased weight, fat neck, and asthma are the factors that influence on pregnancy-induced snoring.
This type of snoring can have other consequences. Pregnant women who snore have a greater risk of hypertension and cesarean.
A study claims that it affects the newborn also. A newborn whose mother snored can have a lower APGAR score than newborns whose mother didnt snore.
Our Experience With Sleeping On The Floor
One of our contributors actually spent anentire year sleeping on the floor!
He recorded some of his thoughts to give you afirsthand look at how this type of lifestyle might look to someone who isinterested in trying it out.
Heres a brief summary of his experiences overthe course of the year, and what he ended up deciding was best for him.
Istarted sleeping on the floor out of curiosity. It just always appealed to me.
Iexperimented with many different types of cushioning but what I ended upsettling on were two yoga mats, a quilt, and a sleeping bag. I would lay on topof these, and cover up with another quilt.
I alsoexperimented with pillows. I found that two pillows worked best when I slept onmy side, while a single pillow worked best while I was on my back.
Thisgave me just enough support, but also felt soft enough that I didnt getuncomfortable.
When Itried to sleep with less padding , I would legitimately wake up at night because I couldnt getcomfortable.
I triedit for several weeks, and it just never worked out. It took adding the yogamats to really make progress.
Once Igot this nailed down, I slept that way regularly. I would literally set up thislittle floor bed beside my real bed, and sleep on it because I preferred itto sleeping on a mattress.
Therewas one time where I got really sick with a fever, though, and ended up movinginto my bed because I was especially sore, and laying on the floor feltespecially hard.

People With Sleep Apnea Die Because They Cant Breathe In The Middle Of The Night
MOSTLY FALSE. The potentially fatal consequences of sleep apnea, such as heart disease, generally occur over time. When someone with sleep apnea stops breathing during sleep, the body senses it and steps in. Your brain wakes up so you can take a breath, Dr. Pervez says. However, its possible for a drop in oxygen to cause immediate death in someone suffering from advanced heart disease or another severe condition. The risk of death also depends on the severity of sleep apnea.
Invest In A Firmer Mattress
The best mattress for stomach sleepers is one on the firmer side, with just enough give to provide relief for your major pressure points. Typically, that is a mattress with a medium to firm firmness rating, depending on your body weight and personal preferences. Lighter-weight people may prefer a mattress on the softer end of that range, while heavier individuals tend to sleep better on a firmer mattress.

Why Snoring Is Good For Your Health
It’s loud, annoying for your partner, and has long been thought dangerous for your health. But could heavy snoring actually extend your life?
That’s the controversial suggestion emerging from a recent study on sleep apnoea.
For years, the condition, which causes interruptions in breathing during sleep, has been linked to high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks.
While it might be frustrating for your partner, it seems snoring is actually good for you
It also raises the risk of car and work accidents.
But now an Israeli study of 600 people over 65 has found that the risk of early death in people with moderate sleep apnoea was less than half that of people with no history it.
The study also showed that the risk of early death for those with a severe form of the condition was the same as a healthy control group, when it was expected to be higher.
One theory is that the constant breaks in oxygen and blood supply to organs, caused by the pauses in the breathing, somehow strengthen the heart and brain this means that if a heart attack or a stroke occurs, the body is better able to deal with it.
Youre A Noisy Sleeper
Snoring, snorting or gasping: Noisy sleep is a warning sign that your upperairway might be obstructed. Not all snorers have apnea, but the two oftengo hand-in-hand. As snoring gets louder, chances of havingsleep apnea are greater and greater. If you have apnea, your bed partner might notice that the snores arepunctuated by pauses in breathing. Those are apnea episodes, and they canrecur hundreds of times a night.

Should You Change Your Sleep Position
If you sleep on your stomach and experience stiffness or soreness, you might want to try a new sleep position. Research shows stomach sleeping is the worst position for back support. Sleeping on your back or your side offers significantly more health benefits and less discomfort than sleeping on your stomach. For example, one study of sleepers with back pain found that those who switched to side or back sleeping reported significantly less back pain.
Does Gargling Salt Water Help Snoring
Open nasal passages They allow air to move through at a slower pace. A clogged or narrowed nose because of cold or any other blockage can cause snoring because of fast-moving air. Your nasal passages can open by taking a hot bath before going to bed. Rinsing nose with salt water can help in opening up passages.

The Most Common Type Of Sleep Apnea Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea
TRUE. Thats what weve been discussing here: a completely or partially blocked upper airway causing frequent wake-ups. A much less common type is called central sleep apnea, when the airway is open, but the brain does not send a signal to breathe. This type is sometimes seen in people with advanced heart disease or neurological disorders, or those taking narcotic medications. Often, it consists of a characteristic rhythmic pattern of pauses in breathing or slow breathing followed by periods of rapid breathing.

Q: What Types Of Treatment Are Available
If the problem is large tonsils or adenoids, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove them. If excess weight is an issue, you can work with your pediatrician to help your child lose some weight.
When the underlying problem is sleep apnea, your doctor may suggest weight loss or possibly surgery.
Once sleep apnea resolves, 90 percent of otherwise healthy children have no further issues, notes Dr. Hopkins.
You Might Experience Back Neck Or Shoulder Pain
Stomach sleeping may also increase your risk of neck pain. When you sleep on your stomach, you must turn your head to one side in order to breathe. Turning your head requires you to twist your neck, which moves it out of alignment with the rest of your spine.
Beyond back and neck pain, poor sleep posture can lead to additional complications such as headaches and shoulder or arm pain.

What Causes A Dog To Snore It All Comes Down To Breathing
Just like with humans, snoring in dogs generally occurs when air movement is restricted in the nasal passageways or throat.
Some of what can cause dogs to snore may simply be that they like to sleep on their back, so their tongue ends up partially blocking some of the air movement in their passageways. Or your dog might be allergic to dust or second-hand smoke, each of which can lead to snoring.
There are also serious health issues to consider, like an abscessed tooth that makes its way into the nasal sinus passages, or even sleep apnea. Both conditions can, of course, require surgery.
That said, a sleep apnea diagnosis for a dog is extremely rare, says Dr. Carol Osborne, who owns the Chagrin Falls Veterinary Center & Pet Clinic in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Dr. Osborne adds that snoring is quite often an indicator that a dog has hypothyroidism, which is when the thyroid gland doesn’t make enough of the hormone that controls metabolism. It’s a fairly inexpensive health fix, although it does require keeping your dog on medication for the rest of its life.
Diagnosing hypothyroidism “involves the vet taking a little blood sample and sending it to the lab, and if the thyroid levels are low, then we simply give your dog some medicationa little tabletand the problem goes away almost immediately,” Dr. Osborne says.
Gumshield Eases Agony Of Labour
Wearing a gumshield could slash the time it takes for a woman to give birth. A new study shows that biting on the device boosts the power of muscles in the neck and back, enabling a woman to push harder.
Researchers believe it could even help reduce the number of emergency caesareans carried out when mothers can’t push any more.
Researchers have found wearing a gumshield could reduce the length of labour
The percentage of babies in the UK born by caesarean has soared from 5 per cent in the 1970s to about 30 per cent.
But in recent years there have been concerns about the consequences of more surgical deliveries.
Research at Oxford University has highlighted an increased risk of stillbirths, while other studies point to higher rates of asthma and diabetes compared to those born naturally.
American researchers of women who wore a gumshield in the second stage of labour, the ‘pushing’ phase, showed that average time to delivery was 19 minutes, compared to more than 30 minutes without a gumshield.

Health Risks Of Snoring
Severe sleep apnea carries a significant risk for early death, but even mild to moderate sleep disorders can be related to heart disease, reduced sexual function, and other problems.
You may think of snoring as a sometimes annoying or embarrassing, side effect of sleep. But before you discount your snoring as nothing out of the ordinary, consider this: People whose snoring is caused by severe sleep apnea have a 40 percent greater chance of dying early than do their peers. Thats because this sleep disorder is related to a host of health problems, from heart disease to depression, warns sleep medicine expert Karl Doghramji, MD, medical director of the Sleep Center at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospitals in Philadelphia.
If you know you have sleep apnea, or you snore, here are 11 conditions linked to snoring and sleep apnea that you should know about. If youre not sure, this should be the wake-up call you need to discuss your snoring with your doctor.
Mental Health Issues
Less Sexual Satisfaction
If Youve Got Heart Disease Youre More Likely To Have Sleep Apnea
TRUE. Sleep apnea is related to several cardiovascular problems and other medical conditions, though the evidence for some associations is stronger than for others. There is a strong link between sleep apnea and hypertension and heart arrhythmias . Sleep apnea is also a risk factor for stroke and can affect insulin resistance, leading to diabetes.
You Have A Drink After Dinner
Booze facilitates snoring.
“Alcohol preferentially relaxes the throat muscles more than the thoracic muscles, which we use for breathing,” Dr. Romaker says.
Also good to know: “Marijuana does not appear to have the same effects on the throat muscles,” Dr. Romaker says.
How Do You Know If You Snore
Walter Sweetness Payton, legendary running back for the Chicago Bears once said When youre great at something, theyll tell you. Although Payton was referring to his athletic ability in this quote, the same is true for snoring. When you snore, people will let you know!
Most often your partner will tell you when you are snoring. This is due to the loud, harsh noises you are making when you sleep. And the reason theyre telling you is because it makes sleeping difficult for them.
The affect snoring has on your partner is often portrayed humorously in movies and TV, as depicted in the commercials below.

Surgery Is Not A Permanent Cure
- Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty the tonsils are taken out and the soft palate reshaped. This operation is performed under anaesthetic and requires a hospital stay.
- Laser uvulopalatopharyngoplasty a laser beam is used to wound the palate. When the tissue heals, it is usually stiffer because of scarring. The patient can go home straight after treatment. This method is generally not successful and so is discouraged by experts.
- Somnoplasty is piecemeal burning of the soft palate. This method is also now discouraged by experts.

You can also use a body pillow to help keep your body straight while sleeping on your side while on the floor.
It really just depends on your body and onwhat feels good.
Another Cause For Snoring In Dogs: Excess Weight
Dr. Osborne says that one of her patients is a Pomeranian who should weight nine pounds but weighs 17 pounds
“You have to be careful telling someone their pet is overweight. It’s a great way to lose a client,” Dr. Osborne says.
But she did tell her client, and they are working together to bring down the Pomeranian’s weight. When a dog is overweight to morbidly obese, extra fat can also collect in the throat, which blocks the airways and causes snoring.
