Currently, no medication can cure restless leg syndrome. However, doctors can prescribe medications that help reduce restlessness. According to the Mayo Clinic, drugs used for RLS treatment include sleep medications, muscle relaxants, medications that affect calcium channels, medications that increase dopamine, and opioids.

If youve ever had an itch that just had to be scratched, you have an inkling of what one in 10 Americans who have restless leg syndrome deal with night after night. Restless leg syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by uncontrolled movements of the arms and legs. The condition is caused by disruptions in the electrical activity of the nervous system. The itchy, tingling, creepy-crawly symptoms, which provoke an overwhelming urge to move the legs in order to get some relief, are more than unpleasant. They seriously impair sleep. There’s no slam-dunk for this condition, but there are some therapies that may help.

One promising treatment is enhanced external counterpulsation . This therapy increases blood flow throughout the entire body and is extremely beneficial for treating restless leg syndrome.

Supplemental iron has been shown to reduce symptoms in people who are iron deficient. Since mild iron deficiency is common , start with 28 mg of iron per day, taken along with vitamin C to increase absorption. If that doesnt help after three or four weeks, get your iron levels tested before taking more iron.

Low levels of magnesium and vitamin D have been linked with restless leg syndrome, so a good multi plus extra vitamin D 2,0005,000 IU are recommended.

Q. I have been using Bed Soap in my bed for five years to manage my restless legs syndrome . I truly cannot live without it. I even travel with a bar I can use in hotel rooms.

A Bar Of Soap For Rls: Myth Or Reality

Like many common remedies, this one may hold some truth. Soap bars contain magnesium, which has shown to relax the muscles and soothe cramping that occurs with RLS. Soap also has a scent that may be helpful for improving sleep and pain.

However, this remedy is not proven. In other words, the soap may or may not help with RLS. Studies that have shown possible benefits have not shown dosing, administration, or placebo results. This is why this remedy is not considered evidence-based.4

Ask your doctor about this and other home remedies that may be helpful in managing your symptoms of RLS. What is helpful in one person may not be in others, but having the conversation may be the key to finding what works best for you.

What Evidence Is Needed

The gold standard for scientific research evidence is a randomized controlled trial. In this case, there would be two similar groups with restless legs or leg cramp complaints and half the subjects would use a bar of soap and the other half would use a placebo, like maybe a similarly shaped piece of plastic.

Then, the outcomes would be studied, comparing the symptom relief of each group. Ideally, the subjects would be blinded, not knowing if they used soap or the placebo.

These studies have not been done and it is rather unlikely that funding would be secured to do the research as there is no scientific basis to even consider that soap might work.

At the core, restless leg syndrome is a neurological disorder, meaning the unpleasant sensation and urge to move come from the brain. As explained by the Johns Hopkins Center for Restless Legs Syndrome, the condition has four key characteristics:

    I’d like to propose deletion for that.

    I can see that some permutation of the bar of soap has already been discussed in conjunction with this article. Therefore, I’m wondering if anyone has any pressing reasons for keeping any variation of this whatsoever in the article. Personally, I would dearly love to see the sourcing for this. Without a good source, however, this particular folk remedy seems dubious and a bit POV at best. It also fails to cleave very hard to the ideal encyclopedic tone.

    Treatment For Restless Leg Syndrome

    Although there is no cure for RLS, there are treatments that may help to relieve it. RLS may respond well to pharmacologic therapy. Some RLS treatments have been studied in controlled, randomized trials. Dopaminergic agents, opioids, alpha-2-delta calcium, and benzodiazepines were the drugs studied.

    Sometimes, avoiding certain medications may help prevent bouts of RLS. The antihistamine diphenhydramine , antinausea medications, and prochlorperazine could make RLS worse. The list of drugs that may aggravate RLS is long, so speak with your doctor when you have RLS about what medications you need to avoid.

    It is also thought that some exercise may help alleviate RLS. Doing things like walking, swimming, and cycling could relieve the symptoms. This does not mean that overdoing it is a good thing because that might make the condition worse.

    Everyone, regardless of whether they have restless leg syndrome, slumbers better when they go to bed and wake up at approximately the same time every day. The body functions best when we stick to a schedule and have a predictable routine. Maintaining consistent sleep and wake times helps minimize fatigue and reduces your chances of experiencing the exhausting problems associated with this disorder. Aim to get at least 7 to 8 hours per night, or more if you need it. Then prioritize your life so you get the snooze time you need to keep restlessness at bay.

    Helpful Bedtime Practices

    Certain activities will help you drift off more easily. Sipping a cup of tea, taking a warm bath, and reading a relaxing book can help you wind down and fall asleep. Avoid reading anything too stimulating. Indulging in complex or frightening reading before bed may not be helpful. Another health tip is to avoid emotionally charged conversations in the evening. Emotional upset may prevent you from falling asleep and staying asleep.

    Who Gets Restless Legs Syndrome

    About 10% of people have restless legs syndrome, also called RLS. About 2% to 3% of them have moderate to severe symptoms that affect their quality of life. Also:

    • Slightly more women than men get it.
    • Most people with severe RLS are middle-aged or older.

    • People with RLS in their family usually get it at a younger age.

    Other Natural Remedies For Restless Leg

    Once my mom started having the issue, I started studying it more.

    Things I have found that have helped others:

    Magnesium supplements can often keep chemistry on your side to help your muscles stay calm.

    Some people have found that a weighted blanket can help. It just helps your legs relax by pressure. I have seen a lot of things about the counter stimulation helping your fidgety legs.

    Light stretching can help keeping in mind that rigorous exercise before bed is NOT recommended, and can make it worse.

    Loosen up I have seen some people say that un-tucking your sheets can help your legs have some movement .

    Chill out some people have said that by changing the temperature helps it can help. I have a BedJet which I love to help relax me before bed! Check it out here.

    A little quinine anyone? My mom has found tonic water to be helpful. Again, no studies people dont recommend it but I saw it recommended again and again online, so I bought her some. And she said it helped, a LOT!

    Doctors say that consumption can help with it as well!

    Some people report that massage can help especially when they concentrate on your leg area. Less helpful when youve just had surgery though.

    I have also heard good things about essential oils for RLS specifically, this one check this out:

    That ones just over 20 bucks and I know RMO has a guarantee, so it seems like it would be worth it to try! Essential oils cant cure anything but I have had a lot of good luck using them.

    What Causes Restless Leg Syndrome

    Restless Leg is also known as Willis- Ekbom disease. RLS causes an uncontrollable urge to move your legs. Moving the legs can bring temporary relief to the uncomfortable sensations. It can begin at any age and may worsen as you get older. RLS seems to be more common in women than in men.

    Sometimes, there is no known cause for RLS. Some researchers think the condition may be caused by an imbalance of the chemical dopamine in the brain. Dopamine sends messages that help control muscle movement.

    Some people are more prone to experience RLS if it runs in their families, which means it can be hereditary. This is more possible when the condition begins before the age of 40. Some research has identified sites on chromosomes where genes for RLS may be present.

    Pregnant women may get RLS for the first time due to hormonal changes, especially in the last trimester. The symptoms may disappear after the pregnancy is over.

    RLS does not necessarily mean a more serious underlying condition. However, it may accompany other conditions such as peripheral neuropathy. This is damage in the nerves of the hands and feet and may be caused by alcoholism or diabetes. Using caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco can aggravate symptoms of RLS. Limiting these substances may help reduce RLS symptoms.

    Kidney failure can also cause an iron deficiency with anemia. If kidneys do not function correctly, it can cause a decrease in iron stores in the blood. This iron change and others may worsen or even cause RLS.
