How Do I Know If I Have Restless Leg Syndrome

The symptoms of RLS are pretty straightforward:

  • The main sensation is an unpleasant, irresistible urge to move your legs that is relieved by moving them.

  • It can also cause sensations described as throbbing, crawling, or pulling.

  • The arms and trunk can also be affected, but less commonly so.

RLS is worse at night, but it can also occur during the day, especially after sitting still for a length of time. Up to one-third of people with RLS also report the urge to eat at night, leading to night binging. RLS can interfere with sleep and negatively affect your mood, ability to concentrate, and performance in daily activities. To make matters worse, reduced sleep can worsen symptoms.

There is no one specific test for RLS, although testing may be done to rule out other things. The diagnosis can often be made based on your symptoms alone. If youre suffering with symptoms that sound like those of RLS, be sure to contact your healthcare provider.

If you toss and turn at night because of aching, creeping, prickling or crawling sensations in your legs when you lie down, you could have restless leg syndrome. According to WebMD, between five and 15 percent of adults suffer from this condition. Symptoms can make it hard to fall asleep initially and fall back asleep later in the night. RLS is essentially classified as a sleep disorder, movement disorder, and neurological sensory disorder in one.

The National Sleep Foundation says RLS is a serious but treatable condition that can be made better through lifestyle changes, iron supplements, hot baths and more. Always talk to your health care provider or home care provider before trying any treatment.

The Facts About Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless legs syndrome, more formally called Willis-Ekbom Disease, is a condition affecting the nervous system that causes uncomfortable sensations in the legs, along with an overwhelming need to move the legs.

While these sensations can occur at any time of day, they typically happen when a person is at rest, which is more common in the evening hours. Jittery legs and other symptoms of RLS can also occur at other times when a person isnt moving around for a long period of time, such as on a plane ride. Because the condition most often presents itself at night, it disrupts sleep for many who have it, which is why its categorized as a sleep disorder.

If youre experiencing restless legs syndrome, you will have unusual sensations in your legs people often describe as throbbing, pulling, itching, crawling or creeping.

When these feelings occur as a person tries to fall asleep or during sleep, it can disrupt normal sleep cycles and lead to sleep deprivation. Along with these symptoms, those with RLS may also experience fatigue and daytime sleepiness.

Many people who have restless legs syndrome also have a condition called periodic limb movement disorder, which causes the limbs to flex or twitch repeatedly while a person is asleep. Unlike the sensations that occur due to RLS, these are movements that arent uncomfortableand in many cases, because they occur during sleep, the person having them is unaware.

Maintain A Consistent Bedtime

Having a Routine Helps

The body functions best when we stick to a schedule and have a predictable routine. Testing For Restless Legs Syndrome

Because restless legs syndrome is caused by underlying conditions, there is not a lab test or scan that can be used to diagnose restless legs syndrome. However, your doctor can test for underlying medical conditions such as anemia, diabetes, or kidney disease that is linked to restless legs syndrome. Blood tests can measure your blood count, hemoglobin levels, basic organ functions, and thyroid hormone levels.

I found that the following ranges for hormone levels are where my patients at my clinic thrived, not just lived:

  • TSH levels of 1-2 UIU/ML or lower
  • FT4 levels > 1.1 NG/DL
  • RT3 levels < 10:1 ratio RT3:FT3
  • TPO TgAb levels < 4 IU/ML or negative

Remember, it is the individual level of each hormone that determines if your hormones are in balance. Conventional medicine tests for isolated hormones on their own, which will not pick up on whether your hormones are out of balance.

Labs such as Ulta Labs offer at-home tests for hemoglobin, liver and kidney function, and thyroid hormone levels.

Identifying Vitamin B Deficiency

B vitamin deficiency isnt necessarily easy to spot. Thats because there are many different B vitamins, and a deficiency in one might look different from a deficiency in another. Each B vitamin does something different to its neighbors, and so when you lack in one, you might experience fatigue but lack in another might cause skin rashes.

Lets take a brief look at the different symptoms of vitamin B deficiency.

  • Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause anemia, confusion, fatigue, weakness, and depression.
  • Vitamin B6 deficiency can cause anemia, confusion, depression, nausea, and rashes.
  • Very few people lack B1 and B2 because theyre so common. However, a deficiency can cause confusion too.
  • Vitamin B3 deficiency can cause digestive issues, nausea, and abdominal cramps.
  • Vitamin B9 deficiency can cause anemia and diarrhea.

Thats an incredible range of problems. Unfortunately, diagnosing a lack of B vitamins isnt as easy as diagnosing other physical conditions. If you have measles, for example, there are easy-to-spot symptoms that make the condition obvious. But a vitamin or mineral deficiency is much harder to spot because the symptoms are more generic. If youre in doubt, talk with a healthcare professional to find out more.

What Are Common Signs And Symptoms Of Restless Legs

People with RLS feel the irresistible urge to move, which is accompanied by uncomfortable sensations in their lower limbs that are unlike normal sensations experienced by people without the disorder. The sensations in their legs are often difficult to define but may be described as aching throbbing, pulling, itching, crawling, or creeping. These sensations less commonly affect the arms, and rarely the chest or head. Although the sensations can occur on just one side of the body, they most often affect both sides. They can also alternate between sides. The sensations range in severity from uncomfortable to irritating to painful.

Because moving the legs relieves the discomfort, people with RLS often keep their legs in motion to minimize or prevent the sensations. They may pace the floor, constantly move their legs while sitting, and toss and turn in bed.

A classic feature of RLS is that the symptoms are worse at night with a distinct symptom-free period in the early morning, allowing for more refreshing sleep at that time. Some people with RLS have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. They may also note a worsening of symptoms if their sleep is further reduced by events or activity.

People with RLS can sometimes experience remissionsspontaneous improvement over a period of weeks or months before symptoms reappearusually during the early stages of the disorder. In general, however, symptoms become more severe over time.

Get Regular Physical Activity

Get Active

Another of the home remedies is mild-to-moderate exercise, which has numerous benefits for overall health and promoting sleep. It also leads to fewer restless leg syndrome episodes. Schedule workouts in the morning or afternoon for the biggest benefits. Working out too late in the day may make it harder to fall asleep and be counterproductive. Be careful not to overdo it. Adequate exercise is a boon to body, mind, and sleep, but exercising too much will drain you and can be dangerous. Find the level of physical activity that makes you feel the best and reduces your RLS problems.

Exercise Ideas

Are you new to exercise? See your doctor for a thorough check-up and make sure it’s safe for you to engage in physical activity. Ask him or her how much activity is appropriate for you. Most experts agree it’s a smart idea to get 30 minutes of physical activity, most days of the week. Not sure where to start? Walking is one of the simplest, most cost-effective workouts you can engage in. All you need is a sturdy pair of walking shoes. Stroll around your neighborhood before or after work or on lunch breaks. Walking with a buddy can help keep you on track and accountable to each other. Start slow and with just a few minutes a day. Gradually increase the pace and length of your walks as you get accustomed to the level of activity.

Can Weed Help With Restlessness

How to Treat Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

Restless leg syndrome has some correlation to dopamine deficiency in the brain. Marijuana is capable of increasing the production of dopamine in the brain. This is made possible due to the compound called THC, which is found in marijuana. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is a compound that produces weeds psychoactive effects like heightened senses.

THC is similar in structure to anandamide, which is a chemical found naturally in the brain. Anandamide is responsible for sending chemical messages between cells in the body. Because of this similarity, THC can interact with the brains compounds easily.

For example, THC latches itself to molecules in the brains receptors and activates the brains reward system, leading to the production of dopamine, which is the pleasure hormone.
