Why Is Sleep Important
Sleep restores children physically. It helps them learn and remember things, and it boosts immunity. And sleep helps children grow. For example, childrens bodies produce growth hormone when theyre asleep. Children often need more sleep at times of rapid growth.
Children of all ages need to get enough sleep so they can play, learn and concentrate during the day.
Newborn Sleeps All Day 10 Fail
Does your newborn sleep all day, then want to party all night? Thats day-night confusion. Unfortunately its all too common in newborn babies. But dont despair, it can be very easily fixed in just a few days!
Of course, being still so tiny, your baby needs to feed frequently, both day and night. But instead of your newborn sleeping all day and only waking to feed, you want your baby to sleep all NIGHT, only waking to feed. Allowing you just a little a bit more sleep.
In the early days these awake periods may be no more than a grunt, wriggle, leg kick and stretch. But as your baby grows and these awake periods get longer, these frequent night parties will be become less and less fun for youSo then its time to work on switching your newborn from sleeping all day to sleeping all night.
Are Babies More Awake At Night Than During The Day While In Utero
Although you may swear to the contrary, babies dont move much more at night than they do during the day while in utero. You may be noticing more movement at night because youre laying down and your baby is coming into contact with different organs.
They do move a little more when you lie down, however. This isnt some kind of protest to you trying to rest or a strange form of malintent your abdominal muscles relax when you lie down, giving your baby more room to move, stretch, and explore their developing body.

Signs Your Newborn Is Tired
Your baby may get tired after any activity – a feed, a nappy change, or when youve had a cuddle or playtime. Theyll likely get tired after theyve been awake for one to one and a half hours.
When theyre tired, your baby might:
- clench or suck on their fists
- have tense or jerky movements
- arch backwards
- have trouble focusing, or stare into space
- startle easily.
Week 5 Of Newborn Sleep Schedule
The dream feed is one of the most important feeds of the day. Or night, rather.
Because its what will help baby get a longer stretch of sleep through the middle of the night and its whatll help you do the same!
A dream feed is essentially a feeding you give the baby between 10:00 pm and 11:00 pm or so, right before you go to sleep.
It helps top the baby off so to speak and will hopefully allow you both an extra hour or two of uninterrupted sleep.
This feed is important because it works to fill the babys tummy during early evening hours so they learn to sleep long stretches.
It is also the last feed youll likely drop.
When you have only one nighttime feed left this will be that feed.

Should I Wake Up With My Baby Every Time They Wake Up At Night
During the first 12 months, babies develop quickly, and their sleep patterns change rapidly. Its important to understand that all babies briefly awaken several times a night. Some babies are able to soothe themselves back to sleep after they wake up. Other babies learn to signal their parents for help to settle them back to sleep if they wake up in the middle of the night. However, it is best to let the newborn comfort himself or herself back to sleep rather than develop a need or association with a parent or guardian.
Newborns Communicate By Crying
The average newborn cries and fusses almost three hours a day until around 3 to 6 months of age. Some newborns cry more than this.
Newborns are usually the most unsettled during their first three months. They also have their longest periods of crying during this time.
A lot of this crying and fussing tends to happen in the late afternoon and evening.
Crying is a newborns main way of communicating, you should respond calmly and consistently.
Sometimes, there is no clear reason why a newborn is crying. They may not stop crying even though you try to help them settle.
From approximately two weeks to three to four months of age, newborns go through a stage of increased crying, which peaks around 6 to 8 weeks of age.
The crying may be difficult to soothe. If you need to take a break, place your newborn in their cot or another safe place and take a break for a few minutes. Your self-care is important.
This is a completely normal part of newborn development. There is no need for concern, as long as your baby is growing, gaining weight and is happy at other times.

What To Do If Your Baby Isnt Sleeping Well
Every baby is different, so dont fret if your baby isnt following all the rules. While its normal for newborns to wake up multiple times throughout the night, dont hesitate to talk to your pediatrician if you have questions about your babys sleep patterns.
If your baby wakes up crying and doesnt fall back asleep after a few minutes, they might be hungry, uncomfortable, or need their diaper changed. Quickly and quietly take care of their needs, using a nightlight instead of the overhead light if possible. You may soothe an anxious baby by patting them or saying a few reassuring words, but try not to take them out of the crib unless its strictly necessary.
Giving your baby plenty of love and attention during the day and encouraging them to be independent at night may ease the that many babies start to feel around the 6-month mark. Your baby may also feel more comfortable with a pacifier.
Its not uncommon for babies to revert to an erratic sleep schedule once in a while. These sleep regressions are a normal part of healthy infancy and can happen due to teething, illness, growth spurts, changing naptimes, or when they are learning new skills such as how to talk or walk.

From about 6 months on, most babies are capable of putting more than one sleep cycle together for naps. Once youve determined what your babys pattern should be, then you can start to work on extending naps that are too short. Babies Under 6 Months: When And How Much They Sleep
NewbornsNewborns sleep on and off during the day and night. They sleep for 14-17 hours every 24 hours.
They have two different kinds of sleep active sleep and quiet sleep. In active sleep your baby moves around. You might see jerking, twitching or sucking. In quiet sleep your baby is still and breathing evenly.
Newborns move through active and quiet sleep in cycles that last about 50-60 minutes. They might wake up after a sleep cycle and need help getting back to sleep.
Babies 3-6 monthsBy three months, babies start to develop night and day sleep patterns, and they tend to start sleeping more during the night. Babies usually sleep for 12-15 hours every 24 hours.
At 3-6 months, babies might start moving towards a pattern of 2-3 daytime sleeps of up to two hours each. They might still wake at least once at night.

Manage Cluster Feeding And Nursing Struggles With Sleep
Cluster feeding is when a baby will suddenly start eating much more frequently for a period of time. Its usually for a few hours in the evening and differs from their normal eating patterns.
It doesnt always mean theres something wrong with their intake or your milk supply, but if you feel like your baby is always eating without being satisfied, it would be good to investigate that with your physician or lactation consultant.
Its common in infants that are a few days to a few weeks old. They may show their usual hunger signs and wont stop crying/won’t be settled until theyre fed.
Itll feel like they want to eat constantly or frequently for short periods of time and nothing else is wrong. It could also indicate a growth spurt!
Ways to manage cluster feeding with a newborn include:
- Supplementing with formula or pumped milk
- Parking yourself on the couch with a plate of food/snacks for yourself and your favorite show
- Change feeding positions often so you dont get sore
- Take care of your nipples with lanolin or silverettes when youre not feeding on that side
- Have a basket of special toys for older siblings
- Hand off baby for a short period of time and take a shower
- Communicate ahead of time if this is a normal pattern for your little one about expectations, ways family can help, etc
Sleep Patterns From 3 6 Months
Naps may become more clearly defined at this point. 4 month olds need about 5 naps during the day 6 month olds need more like 3 or 4 naps each day. Dont worry if these naps dont happen at the same times each day. Some babies this age will nap very predictably, but others wont until later.
During this stage, the 4 month sleep regression can happen. This is a point at which your babys sleep patterns change permanently its also the reason why some babies who have been sleeping likewell, like babiessuddenly start waking frequently and sleeping a lot less. This is also the point at which you can start sleep coaching your baby
While some babies will start to sleep through the night by this point, others wont, and thats perfectly okay. Many 6 month olds still need 1 2 nighttime feedings. However, by 6 months of age, your baby should be sleeping for longer stretches at night and shorter periods during the day.

Nap Transitions: How & When Your Baby Will Drop Their Naps
If your wee one has been napping well in the day or sleeping well at night, but suddenly has started waking more overnight or waking early in the morning, it may be time to drop a nap.
If you can rule out causes like over or under tiredness, hunger, room conditions or sickness and your baby is in the age brackets below, you are left with the likelihood that it might be time to drop a nap.

What Are The Different Alert Phases Of A Newborn
Babies also have differences in how alert they are during the time they are awake. When a newborn awakens at the end of the sleep cycles, there is typically a quiet alert phase. This is a time when the baby is very still, but awake and taking in the environment. During the quiet alert time, babies may look or stare at objects, and respond to sounds and motion. This phase usually progresses to the active alert phase in which the baby is attentive to sounds and sights, and moves actively. After this phase is a crying phase. The baby’s body moves erratically, and he or she may cry loudly. Babies can easily be overstimulated during the crying phase. It is usually best to find a way of calming the baby and the environment. Holding a baby close or swaddling may help calm a crying baby.
It is usually best to feed babies before they reach the crying phase. During the crying phase, they can be so upset that they may refuse the breast or bottle. In newborns, crying is a late sign of hunger.

The Importance Of Naps To A 3
Sleep is as much a nutrient for babies as milk. It is just as important for their growth and development. In order to encourage good night sleep, babies need to have day time naps.
Babies need a delicate balance of day sleep vs night sleep too LITTLE day sleep results in cortisol building up in your baby which will make them harder to settle and also lead to night waking or early morning waking.
In a nutshell, babies who dont nap very well can become very hard to settle. You will already know that tired or overtired babies cry more, are fussy when feeding, resist settling and always have an extended unsettled period in the early evening that can last for hours at a time.

How To Clear Up Day And Night Confusion:
- During the day when baby is awake and feeding, open windows, turn on lights, and keep things very bright
- At night, 8:00 pm and later, do all feeding, hugging, cuddling, diaper changing, in very dim or dark conditions
- After feeding your baby during the day, attempt to keep them awake for at least a few minutes by singing, cooing, playing, and bonding
- If your baby seems fully awake in the middle of the night, try turning on very bright lights which will cause baby to shut their eyes
- Dont allow more time than 3 hours between feedings during the day, even if they are still sleeping. Wake them up and feed them again if they continue sleeping. You dont want a 5 hour stretch to happen during the day, you want it to happen at night
- At night, feed them whenever they wake up and are hungry, but let them determine how frequent that is
- At night, avoid stimulating, playing, cooing, singing, or any other behaviors that will encourage baby to stay awake
- Work on your swaddling with these helpful tips.
At this point your baby is getting the hang of the outside world and you are getting the hang of this period.
If baby is napping quite long stretches during the day, then saving his fussiness for night. this could be day/night confusion.
I have had a few babies who would sleep well all day for naps and then would have a two hour stretch at night where they were fussy and not able to be consoled.
This was day night confusion.

Toddlers: When And How Much They Sleep
Toddlers need 11-14 hours of sleep every 24 hours. Usually this is a sleep of 10-12 hours a night, and a nap of 1-2 hours during the day.
Some toddlers arent keen on going to bed at night. Often this is because theyd like to stay up with the family. This is the most common sleep problem reported by parents. It peaks around 18 months and improves with age.
Less than 5% of two-year-olds wake three or more times overnight.
Normal Baby Sleep Versus Adult Sleep
Babies under 1 are naturally lighter sleepers compared with adults. They spend more of their sleeping time in ‘active sleep’ instead of ‘quiet sleep’.
In active sleep, babies breathe shallowly and twitch their arms and legs. Their eyes flutter under their eyelids. Babies can be easily woken up from active sleep.
Everybody has a cycle, where their sleep varies from light to deep. Adults’ sleep cycles are usually about 90 minutes. Babies’ sleep cycles are usually about 40 minutes, so they tend to wake up more often.

How To Help Your Baby Sleep Well And Follow A Sleep Pattern
Know that every baby is different, and all will go through sleep pattern changes
You may find that your little one has a sleep pattern all their own. And this may be different than any pattern listed here or any patterns you hear about from friends and family. As long as your little one seems well-rested and wakes up happily on their own, they are likely getting enough sleep.
There are times that your little one may suddenly goes from a regular sleeping pattern to all not sleeping well at all. This may be a sleep regression. During a sleep regression your baby may wake up more often, may have a more difficult time falling asleep, and may try to skip or change naps. But know that with time and patience your little one will eventually go back to a more predictable sleep pattern.
To help get through a sleep regression or any adjustment in sleep pattern, strive to maintain a general sleep schedule, and provide your little one with a safe and comfortable sleep space. This way youll be giving your child the opportunity to get the sleep they need for healthy development.
