Noise masking is the addition of white noise to drown out unwanted noises, such as snoring, and thus reduce their distracting and startling nature.
Because snoring can get really loud and vary a lot in intensity, the noise isolation provided by earplugs isnt enough to effectively block it. However, combining white noise and earplugs allows us to fall asleep and sleep through louder snoring.

How About Cheaper Noise Cancelling Headphones
I suspect that you really need very good and expensive noise cancellers like the QC35.
I had cheaper noise cancelling earbuds in the past, which are now broken, so I cant test them. But their noise cancelling only helped to attenuate constant humming sounds. Communicating With A Partner Who Snores
So, you love everything about your partner, except their snoring. Its normal. Even the most patient amongst us will draw the line at sleep deprivation. But no matter how much sleep you lose due to someone snoring, its important to handle the problem sensitively. Its common to be irritable when sleep loss is an issue, but try reining in your frustration. You want to attack the snoring problemnot your sleep partner. Remember that your partner likely feels vulnerable, defensive, and even a little embarrassed about their snoring.
Time your talk carefully. Avoid middle of the night or early morning discussions when youre both feeling exhausted.
Keep in mind its not intentional. Although its easy to feel like a victim when you lose sleep, remember that your partner isnt keeping you awake on purpose.
Avoid lashing out. Sure, sleep deprivation is aggravating and can be damaging to your health, but try your best to approach the problem in a non-confrontational way.

What Did Work Well Was The Combination Of Earplugs And White Noise Via Sleep Headphones
I put in my trusted earplugs, put the sleep headphones on top of them and played my white noise. I used DIY sleep headphones made of earphones and a headband. Acusticsheep and Firik sell ready-made sleep headphones .
White noise played through noise-isolating earbuds worked similarly well. I made my own by combining the drivers of normal earbuds with earplugs: I punched a hole into the earplugs, which are made of memory foam and inserted the earbud drivers.
Etymotic Research is well-known for their noise isolating earbuds. I have not yet had the chance to try them though.
As a side sleeper, I find the combination of earplugs and sleep headphones a bit more comfortable than noise isolating earbuds.
Both the combination earplugs/sleep headphones and the noise-isolating earbuds did struggle with the loudest snorer though. I had to play the white noise at a volume that was too loud for my taste.

Do You Snore Does Your Partner Know How Bad Their Snoring Is
Snoreclock and Snorelab are apps that detect and record snoring during the night. I have used Snoreclock for a couple of nights I had a snoring score of 2 to 3%. The first two red bars appeared while I was purposely sleeping on my back. I woke up and turned on my side:
So during recording nights, I snored only very occasionally. People who snore often dont know how loud and frequent their snoring is. Suggest to your partner to use an app like Snoreclock to record their sleep. Hearing themselves snoring and seeing all the red alarm bars that indicate detected snoring periods might be enough to convince them to get themselves checked out or change their sleeping position. You can also zoom in and hear what was actually going on during a particular snoring episode.
How Do I Know If Im Snoring When I Sleep Alone
Unless someone else tells them, most people who snore arent aware of it, and this is part of why sleep apnea is underdiagnosed.
If you sleep alone, your best bet is to set up a recording device. It could be an old-school tape recorder or one of many smartphone apps, but the apps have the advantage of analyzing sound patterns for you to detect likely episodes of snoring. Its best to record for multiple nights since snoring may not occur every night. That being said, apps do not aid in the diagnosis of OSA.
If recording isnt in the cards, be on the lookout for other red flags related to disrupted sleep such as noticeable daytime sleepiness, fatigue, problems with attention or thinking, or unexplained mood changes.

Ruling Out More Serious Causes
Snoring could indicate sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder where your breathing is briefly interrupted many times each night. Normal snoring doesnt interfere with the quality of your sleep as much as sleep apnea, so if youre suffering from extreme fatigue and sleepiness during the day, it could be an indication of sleep apnea or another sleep-related breathing problem. Call your doctor if you or your sleep partner have noticed any of the following red flags:
- You snore loudly and heavily and are tired during the day.
- You stop breathing, gasp, or choke during sleep.
- You fall asleep at inappropriate times, such as during a conversation or a meal.
How Is Snoring Diagnosed
Your provider will ask you several questions, including how often you snore, what it sounds like and how your diet and lifestyle affect your sleep. During an exam, your provider will check your blood pressure, listen to your heart and look in your mouth, nose and throat.
To evaluate your sleep patterns, your provider may order a sleep study . You might be able to do a sleep study at home, or you may need to spend the night in a sleep center. A sleep study evaluates:
- Brain wave activity.
- Breathing patterns, including any periods when you stop breathing or gasp for air.
- Heart rate and oxygen levels.
- Movements during sleep, such as arm or leg movements or tossing and turning.
- Sleep cycles and snoring.

Do Noise Cancelling Headphones Work For Snoring
Your partner or roommate is snoring like a chain saw, and nothing seems to work. You have tried earplugs but they either dont block enough of the snores or you just cant tolerate them.

I have asked myself the same question. And I have tried quite a few different solutions with anything from moderate, over loud, to deafening loud snoring noise.

In fact, they can be made into the best snoring noise blocker I have been able to come up with by boosting their performance with shaped white noise and/or foam earplugs.

How did the QC20 perform then? The Bose QC20 work for me with moderate snoring , but if the snoring gets loud, I have to increase the white noise volume too much for my taste.
