What You Need To Know About Sleep Medications Their Side Effects And Other Issues

A lot of people out there dont get enough sleep more than 1 in 3 American adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If youre one of them, you probably know there are two main treatments for improving sleep: behavioral methods and medications.

When youre desperate for a good nights sleep, medications sure do sound appealing. But there are caveats with them all the prescription pills, the over-the-counter products and the herbal supplements.

Before describing the medications in detail, Ill remind you that the prevailing wisdom is that cognitive behavioral therapy, which involves changing habits and bedtime rituals, is the first-line treatment for insomnia. Sleep experts say CBT is more effective and longer lasting than medication for most people but maybe youre not most people.

Theres clearly a subset of patients who dont improve with CBT, says Andrew Krystal, who directs the sleep research program at the University of California at San Francisco. Theres also a problem with access, he says, as CBT requires effort. Even some of the seemingly simple online versions have fees attached.

Another thing to consider before looking at medications is that sleep troubles often result from something else, such as sleep apnea or depression. Also, alcohol and caffeine intake can interfere with good sleep, as can certain medications, says Constance Dunlap, a D.C. psychiatrist in private practice.

Benadryl For Sleep: A Guide To Healthier Safer Alternatives

Medically reviewed by

From time to time, just about all of us will experience a night in which our bodies just wont let us fall asleep at a normal time.

Dealing with insomnia, whether temporary or recurring, can be stressful. Not only is it frustrating to spend hour after hour in bed without being able to fall asleep, but the lack of sleep that occurs after a night of insomnia can zap your energy, focus and wellbeing.

To deal with occasional bouts of insomnia, many people turn to over-the-counter antihistamines such as diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl®.

Although antihistamines arent designed to treat insomnia, the drowsiness they induce may make it easier to fall asleep, making them a convenient now-and-then treatment option that most people already have inside their medicine cabinet.

Benadryl is a popular first-generation antihistamine that does cause drowsiness as a side effect, partly because it’s less likely to affect the natural histamine produced by our brain.

That’s where the association comes from because of the tight association between antihistamines like Benadryl and drowsiness, it’s a pretty common connection people experiencing light levels of insomnia make to help them curb their sleep problems.

However, they arent the best option for treating insomnia.

Not only are they less effective than other sleep aids, but they may also be more likely to lower your sleep quality and cause certain side effects.

You might not realize that sleep experts discourage the use of sleep aids when you’re walking through the drugstore, where the shelves are typically stocked with various brands. Some 15% to 20% of American adults take a nonprescription sleep aid in any given month, says Dr. Bertisch. But the wide variety of brands may be deceiving.

“People don’t realize that these companies are basically just repackaging one product,” she says. Most sleep aids are antihistamines, which are also commonly used in allergy medications. “People taking sleep aids are essentially taking Benadryl . They don’t realize that’s what most sleep aids are,” said Dr. Bertisch.

Antihistamines are used in sleep aids because they affect what’s known as a histamine receptor in your body, which plays a role in wakefulness. This is why taking an antihistamine can make you feel sleepy. But while a pill can induce that sleepy feeling right before bed, it can linger in your system and can cause a groggy, hung-over feeling the following day.

While some people feel that these over-the-counter products help them get a better night’s sleep, there is limited research on their effectiveness, and the few reports out there indicate that improvements in sleep quality are very modest, says Dr. Bertisch. Therefore, the benefits are unclear, while there appear to be real risks associated with long-term use.

Diphenhydramine And Other Antihistamine Over

Diphenhydramine and other antihistamine non-prescription over-the-counter OTC sleep aids act in the brain primarily by interfering with the action of the neurotransmitter histamine, quieting this wake-promoting system. They also block the action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which leads to some of the side effects we will talk about later. Diphenhydramine is one of the first generation antihistamines. Later ones such as loratadine, which enter the brain to a lesser degree, in general produce less sedation, and are primarily used for allergies rather than for sleep.

It can be challenging to properly find the right amount of Benedryle for your dog if your veterinarian isnt open. You want to be sure not to give them too much when treating them for something specific but you also want it to be effective so it can help them sleep.

Again, we want to point out that working with your veterinarian may be the best way to know that you are giving your dog a safe dose of Benadryl for the purpose intended. This dosage recommendation is for standard allergy Benadryl.

On another note, some pet owners have used Benadryl to put their pet to sleep and even euthanize their pets from home. Lets talk about these topics in a bit more detail.

How To Put A Dog To Sleep With Benadryl

There are sleep aids, anxiety medications, and even tranquilizer-type products that can be used for dogs to calm them or help them rest or be sedated. If you want to use something that is mild rather than a tranquilizer or sedative, Benadryl could be a good alternative for helping your dog calm and sleep.

There may be several reasons to help your dog sleep with Benadryl.

    • Anxiety
    • Extra guests
    • Fireworks

There could be any number of things that will make your dog scared, nervous, or unsettled and you just have to find out what works for you. Benadryl can be an option in many of these cases. We do want to point out that you shouldnt use Benadryl for a dog that weighs less than 6 pounds. Its simply too hard to get the dose small enough for their bodies to handle.

When trying to get your dog to sleep or calm down using Benadryl, it is recommended that you use the common dosage rule of thumb that we discussed in the previous dosage section. Remember, that means approximately 1 mg per pound of body weight.

Dont get too hung up on getting the dosage exact. Its hard to do when youre cutting down a tablet. Get it as close as you can.

Pro Tip: Its better to start with a lower dose than to use too high of dosage so error on the side of caution if you question the dosage in any way.
