How To Improve Your Readings

Fitbit Sleep Tracking

Unlike taking more steps to help you get fit, theres no obvious way to improve your sleep readings. During the week, Fitbit offers some suggestions on ways you can potentially improve those numbers.

  • Limit alcohol consumption. While consuming alcohol before bed may help you fall asleep, it can also contribute to you waking up during the night.
  • Create a regular bedtime and wake-up time. If having a regular bedtime and wake-up time is a challenge for you, set your Fitbit so it reminds you to head to bed at the same time each night and then gently wakes you in the morning with a light vibration.

If youre routinely having trouble getting enough sleep, then its probably time to see a medical professional. The readings from your Fitbit may be useful to give your doctor a baseline idea of your problems before appropriate studies or treatments for you are recommended.

How Does Fitbit Know I’m Sleeping

If you were to go to a doctor for a sleep study, your sleep stages would be measured by an electroencephalogram, which pays attention to your brain activity. Youd also be hooked up to other machines that monitor your muscle movements.

While your Fitbit is not a replacement for going to see a sleep specialist, it detects some of the same things by monitoring your heart rate and your movement while youre sleeping or attempting to sleep. Using those measurements, you can make some reasonable guesses. For example, if your heart rate remains about the same and you dont move for an hour, then chances are good youre asleep.

Fitbit monitors your heart rate variability while you sleep, which helps it determine when youre moving between different levels of sleep. The ratings arent going to be as robust as those you get from a doctor, but if youre looking for some basic information about yourself and how your sleep patterns, it can do the trick.

Does My Tracker Have Fitbit Sleep Score

The first thing you need to know is that not every Fitbit offers a Sleep Score. Pretty much all Fitbit trackers have Sleep Stages, but the two features are not the same. Sleep Score gives you more insight into your sleep habits and collects more data through the heart rate monitor and pulse oximeter. This means Sleep Score can only be found on the companys newer wearables: the Fitbit Versa, Versa 2, Versa Lite, Versa 3, Ionic, Inspire HR, Inspire 2, Charge 4, Sense, and Luxe.

The other major difference between Sleep Stages and Sleep Score can be easily spotted in the name Sleep Score gives you an actual score, which ranges from 0 to 100.

    What Is A Sleep Score

Your sleep score helps you understand your sleep each night to see trends in your sleep patterns.

This detailed look into your sleeping patterns can help you develop healthier sleep habits.

Factors such as caffeine, alcohol, stress, illness, or other actions can impact your sleeping heart rate.

Sleep score is designed to give users an easy-to-understand summary of their sleep quality.

While sleep score is a good feature, it is not an FDA-approved diagnostic tool for diagnosing sleep disorders.

    Turn On On Wrist Mode

The first thing you should check is that the On Wrist mode is switched on. Inspire 2 can be worn on the wrist or as a clip. If the On Clip mode is active, the tracker does not monitor heart rate and some other features. This includes sleep tracking.

To find this open main clock face and scroll up to Settings. Choose that and scroll up or down to find the clip option.

Make Sure Your Fitbit Is Updated

If there is an update to your Fitbit software, it may also affect the trackers ability to report accurate information. Updated software allows the manufacturers to monitor for bugs in their programs and allow the tracker to have the most up-to-date operating software.

To check for an update to your Fitbit app:

  • Open your Fitbit app and tap the Today tab.
  • Tap your profile picture and then tap your device image.
  • If there is an update available, the pink update button will appear.
  • Tap the update button to update to the latest software.
  • To check for an update on the dashboard, first, make sure you have the latest version of Fitbit Connect:

    • Open the main menu.

Once you have confirmed that you have the most up-to-date version of Fitbit Connect, go back to the main menu, and click Check for Device Update. If there is an update, the instructions will appear on your computer screen. Keep your device close to the computer while you are updating your tracker.

    How Accurate Are The Results

While trackers are considered generally accurate, they are also prone to errors. While it is easy to keep track of the number of steps, length and quality of sleep is a whole other ball game. It is virtually impossible for the trackers to determine when you fall asleep. A West Virginia University associate professor called Montgomery-Downs also calls into question the reliability of sleep monitors.

    What Does Awake Minutes Mean

When youre viewing your sleep stage data, youll most likely see awake minutes information. The average adult wakes up several times throughout the night. Even though you may not remember waking up, if your Fitbit shows awake minutes then you definitely did.

If you wake up briefly and then fall right back asleep your brain will likely not remember it at all and will assume that you were sleeping throughout the night. If you frequently wake up feeling like you arent refreshed, thats probably an indicator that you woke up frequently throughout the night and youll see a higher amount of awake minutes in your app.

  • What Is Smart Wake

Fitbit Alta HR: The Gizmodo Review

If youre using a Fitbit Charge 3, Fitbit Charge 4, Fitbit Ionic, or Fitbit Versa then you can turn on Smart Wake when setting an alarm. This will prevent you from waking up when youre in the deep sleep stage.

Smart Wake attempts to find the best time to wake you up starting 30 minutes before the time you set your alarm for. It prevents you from waking up in deep sleep which will help you feel more refreshed and less groggy. If Smart Wake cant find an optimal time to wake you up, itll default to the time you set.

    Which Device Do I Need

For you to take advantage of Sleep Stages, you need to be using a device that supports it. These are all wrist-worn trackers, and you need to keep them on for the whole night from when you head to bed until when you wake up in the morning for the feature to work.

    Problem #: Fitbit Band Breaks

Fitbit: How To Use Sleep Tools

Fitbit devices are pretty high-quality pieces of technology, but theyre definitely not invincible. If your Fitbits band is starting to break, youll need to take advantage of the companys warranty policy.

Its worth noting that if you own a recent Fitbit device and are out of warranty, you can simply buy a new band without replacing the whole unit. If you have an older tracker like the Charge HR, Surge, or Flex, youll want to follow the steps below to get it replaced.

    Potential solutions:

    • As noted on Fitbits Returns and Warranty page, you have the option to return your Fitbit device for a full refund within 45 days of your purchase date, provided you ordered the device from
    • In addition, products ordered in November and December may be returned through January 31 of the following year, or 45 days .
  • Fitbit also offers a one-year limited warranty to the original purchaser of the product, guaranteeing that the Fitbit product is free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. This means Fitbit will fix the damages done to your Fitbit device within the first year, provided youre the original purchaser of the device. If youre not, unfortunately, you may be out of luck.
  • For more details on the companys policies, be sure to visit Fitbits Returns page or contact the companys customer support team to file a claim.

Reasons Why Youre Not Able To See Your Sleep Score

In total, there are 5 reasons that could cause this problem. In this section, weve addressed each of them and weve provided the solution.

  • Heart Rate tracking turned off
  • Forgot to press the sleep now and Im awake buttons
  • Didnt wear the device to the bed
  • Forgot to sync the details in the morning
  • Didnt turn on the automatic sleep tracking option
  • Do I Need Fitbit Premium To See Sleep Scores

No, you dont need Premium to see sleep scores.

Users who pay for the Premium subscription program get more detailed about their sleep score, e.g., a detailed breakdown of restoration score, which looks at an additional metric: your sleeping resting heart rate.

Your sleeping heart rate is generally lower than your daytime resting heart rate.

This Fitbit premium-only score helps you understand how restful your sleep was determined by the differences between your sleeping heart rate and your daytime resting heart rate.

Premium users also get an analysis of both sleep duration and access to Fitbits Guided Programs for better sleep.

Problem #: Problems With Quick View And Tap Recognition

Many Fitbit devices come with a Quick View feature, which allows you to simply raise your wrist to wake the display. Some of these devices like the Alta, Charge 2, and Charge HR also come with tap-enabled displays, meaning you cant swipe through menus like you would on a normal touchscreen device. Instead, all it takes is a simple tap near or on the display to swipe through your daily stats.

Unfortunately, many Fitbit users claim to have problems with Quick View and tap recognition being too slow to respond. If youre in this boat, the answer may lie in your Fitbit apps Settings menu.

Potential solutions for Quick View problems:

    • For Quick View to work properly, your Fitbit device needs to know which wrist its being worn on and whether youre right-handed or left-handed. To check if this is the problem, open the Fitbit app, select your profile photo, select your tracker, then make sure the Quick View toggle is turned on.
    • On that same screen, youll see options to change your wrist placement. Make sure youre wearing your Fitbit on the correct wrist and that youve chosen whether or not youre right or left-handed. This will have a big effect on whether or not Quick View works properly.
