For most of human history, McKenna writes, parents slept close to their babies for their safety and protection, as well as for parents own ease of breastfeeding and sleeping. About 500 years ago, Western societies diverged from the rest of the world regarding family sleep, McKenna explains. Historical records from northern Europe show that Catholic priests heard confessions from destitute women who had overlain onto their newborns, suffocating them in a desperate attempt to limit their family sizethey just couldnt support another child. So the church ordered that babies should sleep in a separate cradle until the age of three.
Over time, other Western trends converged with that decree: Rising affluence and the value on independence and individualism made separate bedrooms fashionable. In addition, Freudian psychology privileged the marriage bed and claimed that babies would be harmed if they were exposed to parents sexuality. Religious and psychological opinion said that children should not be coddled or indulged but required severe discipline to grow up .

I Can See The Results Already
Our little boy started smiling at 2 weeks, laughing at 4 weeks and hasnt stopped. He lights up the room and he draws people to him. I am constantly playing second fiddle to him when we are out and about, with strangers talking to him and getting such a buzz out of him smiling and laughing with them.

He may just naturally be a happy baby and he may just naturally gain weight well but as his mum I firmly believe co-sleeping plays a part. He doesnt need to waste energy crying to get our attention so he can put it directly into growing. And body contact is well known to be even more important than milk in determining growth rates.

While co-sleeping is a blessing for some, other parents view it as an unfortunate habit they fell into rather than a choice they actively made.
