When Is It Safe To Have Your Child Sleep Elsewhere

Sometimes sleep on the move is inevitable, and most babies will need to fall sleep in a car seat or stroller from time to time the authors of the Pediatrics study took pains to reiterate the fact that car seats remain the safest way for babies to travel, and to note that almost all of the car seat-related deaths occurred outside a motor vehicle. Its also important to remember that deaths in these devices were relatively rare. Yet there are a few rules of thumb to keep in mind.

Help For Getting Your Baby To Sleep

If you are having trouble getting your baby to sleep in a crib, consider using a bassinet or cradle instead. A full-size crib is sometimes too big for a newborn or young infant.

Swaddling is a very good technique that often helps babies get to sleep, stay asleep, and get comforted quickly, especially when they are newborns. A properly-swaddled baby feels warm and secure, and the wrap can help prevent a baby from throwing his arms up and startling himself or even scratching his face.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there is a high risk of death if a swaddled infant is placed in or rolls to the prone position, and provides the following guidelines:

“If infants are swaddled, they should always be placed on the back. Swaddling should be snug around the chest but allow for ample room at the hips and knees to avoid exacerbation of hip dysplasia. When an infant exhibits signs of attempting to roll, swaddling should no longer be used.”

Can You Sleep Train While Room

When your baby is a newborn, shell need to feed frequently through the night, and shell continue to wake up overnight in need of a bottle or a nursing session for at least a few months.

But once your baby reaches the 4- to 6-month mark, she may be waking out of habit, not because she needs to. This ritual isnt a healthy long-term strategy for your baby , and at some point shes going to have to learn to get back to sleep on her own.

Remember that sleep training is a personal decision that may or may not be right for your family. If you’re not comfortable sleep training your baby, or decide against it for any other reason, that’s fine.

Children grow out of night waking, even when we do nothing to discourage it. This period of time will be a very tiny part of your childs years with you.

Your goal is to maximize sleep for everyone in the family, while respecting the needs of your child.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics , the best place for a baby to sleep is in his parents bedroom. He should sleep in his own crib or bassinet , but shouldnt be in his own room until he is at least 6 months, better 12 months. This is because studies have shown that when babies are close by, it can help reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS.

A study published in the June, 2017 journal Pediatrics, however, points out a downside to this: babies dont sleep as well, and by extension, neither do their parents.

Researchers found that “early independent sleepers,” babies who slept in their own room before 4 months, slept longer, and for longer stretches, than babies who slept in their parents room. At 9 months, these babies were better sleepers, not just compared to those who slept in their parents room, but also to those who transitioned to their own room between 4 and 9 months.

This is no small thing for sleep-deprived parents. Even a few extra minutes can make all the difference and given that research suggests that sleeping well in infancy improves the chances of sleeping well in childhood, the study seems to suggest that getting babies out of their parents room from the get-go could be a real sanity saver.

But as with most things in medicine, its not that simple.

Reducing The Risk Of Sudi Including Sids And Fatal Sleeping Accidents

There are some things you can do to reduce the risk of SUDI including SIDS and fatal sleeping accidents if you choose to co-sleep with your baby:

  • Put your baby on their back to sleep .
  • Make sure the mattress is clean and firm. Dont use a waterbed, or anything soft underneath for example, a lambs wool underlay or pillows.
  • Keep pillows and adult bedding like sheets and blankets away from your baby. Make sure your bedding cant cover your babys face. Consider using a safe infant sleeping bag so your baby doesnt share adult bedding.
  • Use lightweight blankets, not heavy quilts or doonas.
  • Never wrap or swaddle your baby if youre co-sleeping.
  • Tie up long hair and remove anything else that could be a strangling risk, including all jewellery and teething necklaces.
  • Move the bed away from the wall, so baby cant get trapped between the bed and wall.
  • Make sure your baby cant fall out of bed. The safest spot is on the side of a big bed, away from the edge. Consider sleeping on your mattress on the floor if its possible your baby might roll off the bed.
  • Place your baby to the side of one parent, never in the middle of two adults or next to other children or pets. Your baby might get rolled on or overheat.

Why Inclined Sleepers Can Be Dangerous For Your Baby

Many parents love putting their babies in inclined sleepers, those slanted kind of hammocks made of soft material that hang from a frame. Many of these products can vibrate, blow air or play music, and provide parents the promise of helping a baby fall and stay asleep.

But these products can be dangerous. In April, Fisher-Price recalled 4.7 million Rock n Play infant sleepers following reports of babies who died while in them. Some of the infants rolled from their back to their stomach while unrestrained.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says inclined sleepers like the Rock n Play increase the likelihood of airway compression and suffocation.

Babies should be put to bed on their back alone, unrestrained and on a firm, flat surface without bumpers and other soft bedding, says the AAP and other organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

In this Q and A, we talked with pediatrician Erin Frank, MD, Associate Division Chief, Pediatric Hospital Medicine at UH Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital, about reclining sleepers and why they present a danger to infants. Here is what she had to say:

To be honest, this wont help your baby sleep better, but it will give you more undisturbed sleep. If you make sure that your baby is full when you go to sleep, chances are that you will get a few undisturbed hours when they are the most important.

Take your baby up very gently to not wake him up. Sit comfortably in the dark and place his mouth on your nipple . Push lightly. If necessary open his mouth gently and wait. Throughout human history, breastfeeding mothers sleeping alongside their infants constituted a marvelously adaptive system in which both the mothers’ and infants’ sleep physiology and health were connected in beneficial ways. By sleeping next to its mother, the infant receives protection, warmth, emotional reassurance, and breast milk – in just the forms and quantities that nature intended.

This sleeping arrangement permits mothers to respond quickly to the infant if it cries, chokes, or needs its nasal passages cleared, its body cooled, warmed, caressed, rocked or held. This arrangement thus helps to regulate the infant’s breathing, sleep state, arousal patterns, heart rates and body temperature. The mother’s proximity also stimulates the infant to feed more frequently, thus receiving more antibodies to fight disease. The increased nipple contact also causes changes in the mother’s hormone levels that help to prevent a new pregnancy before the infant is ready to be weaned. In this way, the infant regulates its mother’s biology, too increased breastfeeding blocks ovulation, which helps to ensure that pregnancies will not ordinarily occur until the mother’s body is able to restore the fat and iron reserves needed for optimal maternal health.

Risk Factors For Sudi When Co

Under certain circumstances, some studies have reported an increased risk of SUDI in co-sleeping babies. The following risk factors have been identified:

  • Smoking

A baby exposed to cigarette smoke increases the risk of SIDS, regardless of where the baby sleeps. Smoking parents should never co-sleep with their baby.2426Parents who smoke are encouraged to room-share as long as the room the baby sleeps in is kept smoke-free, as their babies have an increased risk of sudden infant death and therefore require closer observation.

  • Alcohol, drugs or extreme fatigue

Babies are at increased risk of a fatal sleeping accident if they co-sleep with someone who is has consumed alcohol or illegal or sleep-inducing drugs or who is experiencing extreme fatigue.27,28 A parent should not co-sleep with their baby if they have consumed alcohol or illegal or sleep-inducing drugs, or when extremely fatigued.

  • Sharing a sleeping surface with a sibling or a pet

Babies are at increased risk of death if they co-sleep with more persons than their parents 29 or with a pet.30 Co-sleeping with a sibling raises the risk.31 Babies should not co-sleep if anyone other than the parents is in the bed.

  • Obesity

Parents who are obese may not be able to feel exactly where or how close their baby is and so may wish to room-share with their baby.32 Obese parents should not co-sleep with their baby.

  • Formula-fed babies
  • Sofa-sharing
  • Young baby and overheating or head covering
  • Baby alone on an adult bed
