Sleep Stages and the Fitbit Sleep Score

Fitbits sleep feature estimates sleep stages using a combination of movement and heart-rate patterns. When you havent moved for about an hour, your tracker or smartwatch assumes that youre asleep. Additional data, such as the length of time of movements that are indicative of sleep behavior , can also help confirm that youre asleep.

While youre sleeping, your device tracks the beat-to-beat changes in your heart rate, known as heart rate variability . These numbers fluctuate as you transition between light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep stages. When you sync your device in the morning, Fitbit uses movement and heart rate patterns to estimate sleep cycles from the previous night.

Most Fitbit users get a sleep score between 72 and 83. Typical sleep score ranges are:

  • Excellent: 90-100
  • Poor: Less than 60

Sleep Trackers Dont Measure Sleep Very Well

So, do FitBits, Apple Watches and Oura Rings track sleep with accuracy? The answer is, not really. Particularly when it comes to sleep stages. These wearables measure movement very well and are great when used for tracking steps and exercise. But when it comes to sleep, movement and heart rate are not always so helpful in determining sleep. If we are reading in bed quietly for a long period of time, for instance, your device may think youre asleep.

And when it comes to measuring sleep stages, your wearable device is ineffective. In order to accurately measure sleep stages, you would need to have a sleep study in a lab where your brain waves are monitored. Your device may be helpful in giving you an estimate of your general sleep patterns, but are otherwise limited in their effectiveness. Your FitBit has no way of measuring brain waves and typically the sleep stages are just an estimate.

Accuracy Sensitivity And Specificity In Detecting Sleep Epochs By Fitbit Versus Polysomnography

Nonsleep-Staging Fitbit Models

A total of 7 studies involved epoch-by-epoch investigation of nonsleep-staging Fitbit models with reference to PSG in differentiating between sleep and wake state . Out of these 7 studies, 1 consisted of two different samples, thereby increasing the total number of evaluations to 8. Across these trials, Fitbit versus PSG analyses identified sleep epochs with accuracy values between 0.81 and 0.93, sensitivity values between 0.87 and 0.99, and specificity values between 0.10 and 0.52.

A total of 3 studies evaluated the performance of sleep-staging Fitbit models with PSG as reference in identifying sleep epochs through EBE analyses . A total of 1 study included two different samples, thereby increasing the number of possible comparisons to four. Relative to PSG, detection of sleep epochs in three possible comparisons revealed sensitivity values between 0.95 and 0.96 detection of sleep epochs in four comparisons revealed specificity values between 0.58 and 0.69 and detection of sleep epochs, assessed in only a single study , revealed an accuracy of 0.90.

Sleep-Stage Identification

A total of 3 studies appraised performance of sleep-staging Fitbit models in identifying sleep stages by means of EBE analysis . Relative to PSG, accuracy varied between 0.69 and 0.81 in detecting light sleep , between 0.36 and 0.89 in detecting deep sleep , and between 0.62 and 0.89 in detecting REM sleep.

How To View Sleep Tracking Data On The Watch

      Fitbit May Track Sleep Time Accurately But Overestimate Problems

      Your Fitbit might be doing a relatively good job of tracking your hours of sleep, but researchers warn its shortcomings can create more anxiety for those who struggle to rest.

      Two small studies conducted by Monash University, published in the Journal of Sleep Research this week, found a Fitbit is comparable at measuring sleep time to clinical devices. However, when measuring the quality of a person’s sleep, wearable devices recorded the person as having a more shallow sleep than they actually obtained.

      In one study, researchers collected sleep data from 25 people with insomnia using both the Fitbit Alta HR and a research-grade actigraph over two weeks.

      The second study, conducted on one night, saw 42 individuals with insomnia have their sleep measured by the wearable devices as well as polysomnography, a lab study involving a number of sleep indicators including brain activity, eye movement, muscle activity and heart rhythm.

      Researchers concluded the Fitbit was equivalent to the actigraph in almost every way. Yet, when compared with polysomnography, the Fitbit was largely underestimating deep and REM sleep, missing roughly half of the former and a third of the latter. It also overestimated light sleep.

      The Fitbit recorded an average of 50 minutes more total sleep than polysomnography, a figure in line with previous studies.

        Your Fitbit Inspire 2 automatically tracks your sleep when you wear it to bed, it will track basic stats about your sleep, including your time asleep, sleep stages , and sleep score . To see your sleep stats, sync your tracker when you wake up and check the Fitbit app.

        As mentioned by others before, when going to bed make sure that your Inspire 2 is “On Wrist” mode. Because when your Inspire 2 is set to On Clip, certain features are turned off, including heart-rate tracking, automatic exercise tracking, Active Zone minutes and water lock.

        To properly troubleshoot your Fitbit when it isnt tracking or recording your sleep, it helps to understand how Fitbits track sleep in the first place. Fitbit registers that you are sleeping after an hour of no motion. Therefore, if you take a nap for less than an hour, your Fitbit will not recognize it as sleep.

        First, make sure your Fitbit is snug on your wrist before going to sleep to ensure the most accurate sleep tracking. However, if your Fitbit still doesnt track your sleep, try the following troubleshooting tips:

        Why Can Fitbit Track Sleeping

        The ability of Fitbit trackers to track sleep patterns is down to the fact that its fitted with sensors called accelerometers. They help detect the wearers motion along with the direction and speed of the motion. When the tracker detects that you havent moved in over an hour, the algorithm assumes that you are asleep. This is often supported by the kind of movements you make while youre asleep such as rolling over. Your movements in the morning tell the tracker that you have woken up. This mechanism is not perfect and for this reason can falsely assume that youre asleep after you have stayed for too long without moving. When this happens, simply delete the sleep record from your dashboard.

        Fitbit sleep tracking works differently for different models as explained below:

        • Fitbit Ultra, One, Flex and Zip: Enter the time you spent asleep on the Fitbit website or in the app. Fitbit will use the accelerometer data to establish whether you were asleep, awake or restless during that time frame. This data is based on the movements of your wrist during the time you said you were asleep.
        • Fitbit Surge, Charge HR, Charge, Force: These 4 models determine the beginning and end of your sleep automatically based on your movements for one hour. You can always enter the time manually if you feel autodetection is not accurate.
