Sleeping Pill Use Linked To Later Increase In Bp Meds
The use of sleeping tablets by older hypertensive patients was linked to a subsequent increase in use of antihypertensive medications in a new study.
“Previous studies have generally found associations of sleep characteristics with blood pressure and hypertension in middle-aged adults. However, these associations were absent or inconsistent among older subjects,” senior author José Banegas, MD, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain, explained to Medscape Medical News.
“Our findings may be useful in practice, given that 1 in 5 older people in the present study increased their antihypertensive treatments during the follow-up, and it is known that the greater the number of medications patients take, the higher the risk of inappropriate medications, adverse reactions, and lower treatment adherence,” he added.
The prospective cohort study was on March 25 in Geriatrics and Gerontology International.
The study involved 752 patients aged 60 years participating in a seniors cohort. The patients were undergoing treatment for hypertension and were followed from 2008-2010 through 2012-2013.
Selfreported sleep duration, sleep quality , and sleeping pill use were ascertained at baseline, and the change in the number of antihypertensive drugs prescribed by the end of follow-up was calculated.
Analyses were carried out with logistic regression and were adjusted for demographics, lifestyle, comorbidity, baseline number of antihypertensive drugs used, and hypertension control.
Precautions About The Use Of Zopiclone
Zopiclone should not be used by people with respiratory failure, severe liver problems, severe sleep apnea syndrome, and those who are hypersensitive to the drug. As with other hypnotic drugs, zopiclone should not be used in children.
The dosage for people with liver and kidney problems should be reduced.;
Clinical studies have suggested that zopiclone has a minimal risk of dependence when the duration of the treatment does not go beyond four weeks.; The risk of dependence or abuse increases with the dosage and duration of use or using the drug in combination with alcohol.;
If physical dependence to zopiclone has developed, abrupt stopping of its use will be accompanied by withdrawal symptoms that include headaches, extreme anxiety, muscle pain, confusion, restlessness, and irritability.;
Stopping the use of zopiclone within the four-week treatment period will not have withdrawal effects.

How Should I Use This Medication
Motion sickness, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and spinning sensation : The usual adult dose of the tablets is 50;mg to 100;mg taken every 4 hours as needed. Do not take more than 400;mg in a 24-hour period. The dose of the long-acting form of dimenhydrinate tablets is 100;mg every 8 to 12 hours, with a maximum of 3 tablets in a 24-hour period. The usual adult dose of dimenhydrinate suppository is 50;mg to 100;mg every 6 to 8 hours as needed.
If you are taking dimenhydrinate for motion sickness, the first dose should be taken at least 30 minutes and preferably 1 to 2 hours before departure.
Pre-radiation therapy : In adults, 50;mg to 100;mg of dimenhydrinate may be given as a suppository or injection, 30 to 60 minutes before receiving radiation therapy. This dose may be repeated as needed up to a maximum of 400;mg over a 24-hour period.
Surgery: To control nausea and vomiting following surgery in adults, the usual dose is 50;mg to 100;mg taken by mouth or 50;mg of injection into a muscle before surgery. After surgery, similar doses can be used up to a maximum dose of 400;mg in a 24-hour period.

Oct. 11, 2004 — A change in sleeping position may lower your blood pressure.
That suggestion comes from a study presented this week at the American Heart Association’s 58th Annual Fall Conference.
Researcher Yasuharu Tabara of Ehime University School of Medicine in Ehime, Japan, notes that high nighttime blood pressure is a bad sign for people with heart problems. He wondered whether sleeping posture might affect overnight blood pressure — and a person’s risk of a nighttime heart attack.
Tabara and colleagues signed up 271 healthy men not taking blood pressure medication. They ranged in age from 19 to 64, with an average age of 50. The researchers put automatic blood-pressure cuffs on the men and asked them to lie face up. Then they had them turn over and lie face down while they again measured the men’s blood pressure.
The men’s overall blood pressure went down slightly — but significantly — when the men rested face down. Twenty-five of the men had a dramatic decrease in blood pressure — more than 15 points — when they flipped from face up to face down.
“Marked change in blood pressure during sleep by turning the position further studied as a possible cause of cardiovascular events during the sleep,” Tabara and colleagues conclude.

New research suggests that the best time for people with hypertension to take their blood pressure pills is at bedtime rather than in the morning.
Researchers came to these conclusions after analyzing data from the Hygia Chronotherapy Trial.
Hygia is the largest and longest lasting clinical trial to examine the effects of antihypertensive medication timing on the risk of cardiovascular events.
The investigators behind the present findings randomly assigned 19,084 adults to take the blood pressure pills that their doctors had prescribed either when they woke up in the morning or at bedtime. The participants were of Caucasian Spanish descent, and 8,470 were female.
During an average follow-up of 6 years, all individuals underwent 48-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring at least once per year.
The results of this study, says Ramón C. Hermida, Ph.D., the leader of the Hygia project, show that patients who routinely take their antihypertensive medication at bedtime, as opposed to when they wake up, have better-controlled blood pressure and, most importantly, a significantly decreased risk of death or illness from heart and blood vessel problems.
He and colleagues report the recent findings in the European Heart Journal.
