Social Media As A Public Health Data Source

In the last two decades, increasing numbers of patients have become active on the World Wide Web seeking information about symptoms, disease and medications, as well as sharing their health related experiences online in forums, or social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. A reported 72% of internet users say they looked online for health information within the past year.

In the 3rd quarter of 2015, Twitter and Facebook had 320million and 1.6billion active monthly users, respectively., This corpus of publically-facing data could generate new knowledge regarding drugs and their benefits and harms. In recent years, text mining techniques which aim to automatically transform free text into structured data using Natural Language Processing techniques, have proven useful in identifying potential drug safety concerns from text within Facebook and Twitter. Possible opportunities for drug safety arising from automated analysis of social media data include routine pharmacovigilance, the study of drug safety in particular populations of interest, or studying the impact of side effects on patients lives. Traditional methods of pharmacovigilance such as the MHRAs Yellow Card scheme in the UK and the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System in the USA are prone to underreporting with an estimated 94% of adverse drug reactions unreported.,

Insomnia While On Solu

I’ve been living with MS for 25+ years and have tried almost every medication available. I have also been evaluated and tested extensively.

Temporary insomnia is part and parcel of receiving an IV of Solu-Medrol steroids, which is prescribed to combat a MS flare-up. The insomnia is one of the reasons MSers don’t want to consider steroids unless the flare-up is very crippling or very long lasting. No one wants to be up for nights at a time, unless it is absolutely necessary. If MS fatigue is already an ongoing part of your disease, as is the case with me, just thinking about being even more exhausted than usual is most disconcerting.

At least, as with all of the other side effects of high-dose steroid treatment, the insomnia will not be chronic. Usually, your normal sleeping routine will not be upset more than a week or so after the steroid pulse has been discontinued.

Still, many wonder why the insomnia occurs and what, if anything, can be done to handle all the lonely nights spent unable to get some quality rest.

    Why the Temporary Insomnia Occurs

Solu-Medrol is used to calm the inflammation that occurs when our body attacks itself, resulting in a flare-up. The dosage is very high, over-stimulating, and almost totally controls our endocrine system.

So the step that comes next, is how to handle the temporary side effects of the steroids, particularly the insomnia.

Insomnia A Troubling Symptom Of Prednisolone Finds Study Analyzing Tweets

    Posted by Sree Roy | Feb 15, 2018 | Insomnia, Prescription Drugs | 0 |

A University of Manchester team led by Will Dixon, PhD, MSc, examined different types of side effects discussed by people using prednisolone, a commonly used steroid drug, and found the two most tweeted symptoms were insomnia and weight gain.

The researchers used a computer system to automatically identify tweets containing the drug name as well as identifying mentions of what looked like a likely drug side effect. It then converted lay terms like cant sleep to medical terms such as insomnia.

While insomnia and weight gain are well-known side-effects of prednisolone, research has historically focussed on more serious side effects such as osteoporosis and fractures.

Yes this study suggests less serious side effects worry steroid users more.

With the help of sophisticated computer software, The University of Manchester team harvested 159,297 tweets mentioning prednisolone over three years.

Around 20,000 of the tweets also mentioned a suspected side effect. Of the tweets analysed, 1,737 mentioned insomnia, 1,656 mentioned weight gain, 1,576 mentioned non-specific reactions such as I hate Prednisolone, and 1,515 reported increased appetite.

The research is published in the journal Nature Partner Journals Digital Medicine.

    Side Effects Of Steroids

Steroids do not tend to cause significant side effects if they’re taken for a short time or at a low dose.

But sometimes they can cause unpleasant side effects, such as an increased appetite, mood changes and difficulty sleeping. This is most common with steroid tablets.

The side effects will usually pass once you finish the treatment, but do not stop taking your medicine without speaking to your doctor. Stopping a prescribed course of medicine can cause further unpleasant side effects .

    Changes In Natural Sleep

Natural sleep pathways are also affected by steroids. The sleep-wake cycle is primarily regulated in the hypothalamus with circadian release of melatonin from the pineal gland. Melatonin release is highest at night, where it promotes sleep onset and continuity. Upstream, tryptophan is an amino acid that serves as a precursor to serotonin and melatonin. Both endogenous and exogenous corticosteroids decrease serum melatonin levels with a markedly diminished circadian rhythm secretion., Demish and colleagues found a significant decrease in mean nocturnal melatonin plasma levels after the evening administration of oral dexamethasone 1 mg in 11 healthy volunteers: 127 pg/mL before vs 73 pg/mL after P< .01. This result is likely due to decreased cellular metabolism and melatonin synthesis in the pineal gland. Of note, melatonin has neuroprotective affects, and the administration of melatonin has been shown to reverse some steroid-induced neurotoxicities in animal models.

Steroids also reduce the uptake of tryptophan into the brain. Additionally, in animal models, dexamethasone administration caused a significant decrease in the gene expression of tryptophan hydroxylase, which is part of the multistep pathway in synthesizing serotonin from L-tryptophan. These effects upstream could inhibit the biosynthetic capacity of both melatonin and serotonin.

    Cold And Allergy Medications

Tips to Manage Sleep Related Issues in Psoriatic Arthritis

Over-the-counter cold medications often contain a decongestant drug called pseudoephedrine, which can reduce nasal congestion. Pseudoephedrine is known to cause insomnia, even when it is used in the form of a nasal spray.

Some allergy medications called antihistamines promote sleep, so pseudoephedrine may be added to them to prevent drowsiness. As a result, antihistamines that are marketed as non-drowsy or containing a decongestant may interfere with sleep.

Sometimes, doctors prescribe steroid medications called corticosteroids to individuals with severe allergies. Corticosteroid inhalers and nasal sprays are unlikely to affect sleep in most people, but many oral steroid drugs are known to keep those who take them awake at night.

Although insomnia is not a listed side effect of the cough suppressant dextromethorphan, this drug can trigger restlessness and agitation. Some people may experience trouble sleeping as a result.

Ibd: Tips For Managing Steroid Side Effects

When your child receives a diagnosis of IBD, or inflammatory bowel disease, it can be earth shattering in many ways. Its a frustrating condition to manage and can impact your childs and familys quality of life. While medications to treat IBD have come a long way in the last 15 years to help manage the condition, the unfortunate reality is that they often come with side effects. Our main goal for treating patients with a new diagnosis of IBD is to get them feeling better quickly by inducing remission. Steroids are often in our first line of treatments because they are effective at reducing IBD symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. We typically only need to use steroids for around three months following a diagnosis and about 85-90% of patients symptoms respond well to them during this period of time. They can, however, cause side effects for some children.Because parents frequently ask me how to treat the more common side effects from steroids, I thought it might be helpful to share them here. This is a list of recommendations for managing steroid side effects: Poor sleep. Steroids can impact your childs sleep cycle or cause restless sleep. The following suggestions may help:

Weight gain. Steroids can increase your childs appetite and cause bloating. While the following suggestions may not solve the problem completely, they can make a marked difference:

Nausea or upset stomach. Steroids can lead to irritation along the stomach lining. You can help this by:

To Your Good Health: Insomnia One Of Many Prednisone Side Effects

Steroids may impair your ability to fall asleep, especially when they are taken in the evening.

I was prescribed prednisone 5 mg twice daily, but I had insomnia, itching and hot flashes from it. I stopped after four days, but am still suffering from sleeplessness. Has the prednisone had a permanent effect on my body?

Prednisone, a powerful anti-inflammatory and immune system-inhibiting steroid, has many side effects on the body, especially insomnia. Hot flashes and itching are uncommon side effects.

Insomnia is more common when prednisone is taken twice daily. Anytime a person gets insomnia, it can create a situation where they become worried about sleeping, which can lead to a persistent problem, even though the effect of the prednisone is gone.

I recommend some routine steps for treating insomnia, such as avoiding bright lights, including any electronic screen, for two hours or so before bed regular exercise, if the condition for which you took prednisone allows it and a warm bath before bed. A mild sleep aid, such as melatonin 1 mg or less, may help reset your system, but daily use is not necessary.

My wife had a heart attack. They did what they could for her, but she had a 100% blocked artery. They did clean it out, but a week later she had a fatal heart attack. Five or six months earlier, she called me quite often by a former friends name. I am wondering if blood was not getting to her brain or if she was starting to get dementia?

    Can Steroids Cause Sleep Apnea

Common Side Effects of Prednisone & How to Cope

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious condition that can cause you to stop breathing while asleep.

It is a common side effect of corticosteroids type of steroid and some other medications but only occurs in about one percent of people who use them without any prior history or risk factors for sleep apnea.

If you do experience it, do not ignore it because untreated sleep apnea has been linked with several health problems, including heart attack and stroke.

Steroids do not directly cause sleep apnea but can worsen the condition in people who are already at risk for it.

    Avascular Necrosis Of Bone

For reasons that are not known, high dose prednisone predisposes some patients to joint damage, most often of the hips. In avascular necrosis of the hip, the part of the leg bone that inserts into the pelvis dies, resulting in pain with weightbearing and some loss of joint function. Many patients with avascular necrosis require joint replacements.

    How To Take It

There is currently no recommended dose for melatonin supplements. Different people will have different responses to its effects. Lower doses appear to work better in people who are especially sensitive. Higher doses may cause anxiety and irritability.

The best approach for any condition is to begin with very low doses of melatonin. Keep the dose close to the amount that our bodies normally produce . You should only use the lowest amount possible to achieve the desired effect. Your doctor can help you determine the most appropriate dose for your situation, including how to increase the amount, if needed.

    Pediatric

    • Always ask your child’s doctor before giving melatonin to a child. In fact, doses between 1 to 5 mg may cause seizures in this age group.

    Adult

    • You should work with your doctor to find the safest and most effective dose for you. The right dose for you should produce restful sleep with no daytime irritability or fatigue.
    • Jet lag: 0.5 to 5 mg of melatonin 1 hour prior to bedtime at final destination has been used in several studies. Another approach that has been used is 1 to 5 mg 1 hour before bedtime for 2 days prior to departure and for 2 to 3 days upon arrival at final destination.

Avoid Drugs That Increase Sleep Disturbance

Can steroids save your life? – Anees Bahji

It is essential to avoid drugs that may worsen sleep disturbances or increase the side effects of steroids.

The worst thing you can do while taking prednisone is to add another medicine to your prescription that shares these side effects.

Therefore, it is essential to keep in mind the medications that should be avoided by patients taking prednisone.

I have prepared a list of medications that can exacerbate sleeplessness:

    • Antidepressants including escitalopram , fluoxetine , citalopram , and sertraline . These drugs cause insomnia in 10-20% of patients. Alternative medicines that can be used for depression include duloxetine, venlafaxine, and clomipramine, but be sure to discuss with your doctor first.
    • ACE inhibitorsare another category of drugs that can worsen insomnia. These include captopril , beazrpri , enalapril , and lisinopril , and are commonly used to treat blood pressure and heart disease. They cause sleep disturbances due to the release of a chemical called bradykinin, resulting in a severe cough. Alternative options include calcium channel blockers and diuretics.
    • Beta blockers are commonly used to treat hypertension, arrhythmia, glaucoma, tremors, and migraine. These include atenolol , metoprolol , propranolol , and sotalol , and they decrease the production of melatonin that is already suppressed in patients taking prednisone. Alternative options include amlodipine , verapamil , and diltiazem .

    Other Adverse Side Effects

Although rare, some people may experience other adverse reactions to cortisone injections such as pain or irritation at the site. Some people have experienced an allergic reaction to a cortisone injection.

You should seek medical treatment immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

    • Hives
    • Difficulty breathing
    • Swelling of the face, tongue or throat

Speak with your provider about the side effects you’re experiencing. She may be able to provide you with other options.

Dexamethasone And Insomnia: Does Prednisone Cause Insomnia

Prednisone and Dexamethasone are both kinds of synthetic corticosteroids used to suppress the immune system and reduce inflammation.

Insomnia is one of the most reported side effects, when taking these. So, how does Prednisone cause insomnia? Read on to learn how to sleep while taking steroids. Find the specific cause of this adverse effect, and how to reverse it.

Corticosteroids can successfully treat various conditions, including arthritis, asthma, colitis, bronchitis, and various allergies. In some cases, these substances can also help to prevent the body from rejecting transplanted organs.

Like all medications, Dexamethasone and Prednisone can both cause an additional range of side effects, including:

    • Weight gain
    • Psychotic behavior
    • Personality changes

Additionally, suddenly stopping your consumption of Prednisone or Dexamethasone can also cause withdrawal symptoms, which among other side effects, can cause severe sleeping issues too.

Problem sleeping is slightly more common with Prednisone than Dexamethasone, but both medications are notorious for interfering with sleep. Apart from medications like Adderall, designed to keep you awake and focused, theyre the among some of the worst culprits for disturbing sleep.

Due to their ability to interfere with everything from mood to blood pressure, alertness, and focus all forms of corticosteroids tend to cause insomnia to some degree.

Why You Should Say No To Steroid Abuse

Measured doses of prescribed steroids work wonders for various health complications. However, musing these drugs without doctor’s advice can lead to severe consequences. The most common anabolic steroids that men take include anadrol, oxandrin, dianabol, winstrol, deca-durabolin, and equipoise. Abusers increase the dose by 10 to 100 times higher than the prescribed amount. In these cases, there is no medical reason behind the increase. Here, we tell you about the possible side effects of steroid abuse.
